The Response-Inducing Sustainability Evaluation (RISE) model is a tool for a holistic assessment of farms sustainability level. This model takes into account the ecological, economic and social aspects of farm sustainability. The paper presents the sustainability assessment results of three selected farms of different production directions (crops, livestock and mixed production) located in the province of Lublin. The study showed that none of the compared farms could be considered as sustainable according to the RISE method. Indicators in most cases achieved positive results, with the exception of "Biodiversity and plant protection", "Working conditions" and "Water use" indicators. Crop and multidirectional farms were nearest to achieve the sustainability goal, while swine farm was the farthest from this goal. Nevertheless, none of farms showed any serious problems in sustainability according to RISE assessment.

Currently, a major challenge for the agriculture sector is the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. There is a need to accurately identify the sources of emissions and to promote agricultural practices that would contribute to the reduction of emissions in all chains of crop production. To carry out objective comparisons and choose the best technological solutions according to an emissivity criterion there is a need for the detail quantitative assessment of GHG emissions. The study shows an assessment of GHG emissions in crop production using the carbon footprint (CF). The share of technological operations in CF formation was characterized based on the example of winter oilseed rape. The results indicate that the process of fertilization is of the greatest importance in the CF development. The impact of other remaining processes on the CF is several times smaller. The main hot-spots in GHG emissions due to mineral fertilization are associated with direct and indirect GHG emissions from the fields. Emissions from the production of fertilizers are the second source of emissions from the fertilization process, following GHG emissions from the fields. Changes in agricultural practices by increasing the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization and the use of fertilizers with low emission factors make it possible to reduce GHG emissions at present, and thereby contribute to the CF reduction of crop products.

The main aim of the article is to present multidimensional analysis of profitability of common wheat production in EU farms. The research focused on EU member states in years 2007-2013 and was based on statistical data published by the European Commission in EU Cereal Farms Reports. The profitability of common wheat production was analysed on the basis of income and expenditure accounts, which allowed to conduct multileveled evaluation of farms' ability to generate income from wheat production measured with gross and net margins. Furthermore, the panel regression model was used in order to identify strenght and direction of influence of chosen technical and economic price and cost characteristics on profitability of wheat production. In the light of panel model parameters, price and yield of wheat and both energy and fertilisation costs should be considered as most influential factors.

The purpose of the study is to discuss the quality of life of people from rural areas. The presented analyzes are a part of empirical research and cover one of many aspects of the subject - job satisfaction. The study was conducted among 68 professionally active people living in rural areas in the voivodeship of Zachodniopomorskie. In the research the following questionnaires were used: Questionnaire of Life Quality by Straś-Romanowska, Anna Oleszkowicz, Tomasz Frąckowiak and Job Satisfaction Scale developed by Zalewska. Multiple regression analysis was performed, using the step method. Research shows that higher quality of life in the psychosocial and subjective sphere increases the likelihood of higher levels of job satisfaction. Satisfaction with work correlates statistically and positively with a general sense of quality of life and other dimensions.

The agricultural biogas market differs in different European countries. Both in Europe and in Poland, the basic form is the use of biogas to generate electricity and heat. In nine EU countries, the biogas produced is also used in local gas networks and in transport, especially communal. Biogas production can be based on agricultural raw materials (Germany) or the use and processing of all agricultural, industrial and municipal waste (Denmark, Sweden). The aim of this article is to present dynamics and structure of biogas market development, raw materials used and profitability in various legal and financial models. The presented analyzes have concluded that biogas plants could be an important part of the energy market in the future, particularly at the local level and an important part of a sustainable economy.

The aim was to show the place of regional and traditional products in the contemporary European single market. The changes taking place in this market were reflected in the number of registered regional products in both Poland and other European countries. In addition, the pro-quality and health-promoting role of such foods is now emphasized, nowadays so diverse and dominated by mass market products. The marketing dimension of this market has also been emphasized, paying attention to contemporary ways of promoting this type of product, as well as showing the main ways of distributing the food. In addition, attention was paid to the main factors taken into account in the purchase process as well as the identification of traditional and regional food by purchasers. Theoretical considerations were backed up by a survey of 360 randomly selected individuals via the Internet.

The need to ensure energy security, decouple energy production from fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emission are driving the use of renewable energy sources. The purpose of the study is to assess the energy potential of agricultural crops biomass and to indicate its potential for electricity and heat production. The data from the Agricultural Census 2010 were used for analyses. On the basis of the detailed analysis of the changes in agricultural production in the years 2010-2015 the data has been updated. Is was assumed that the changes in communes were similar to those in voivodships. The energy potential of the crop biomass was estimated taking into account surpluses of straw, hay and perennial energy crops biomass. The study shows that energy potential of the biomass without jeopardizing food production amounts at 305,8 thousand TJ per year.

The aim of the study was to show: the place and role of vegetable crops in agriculture, changes in their production (area of crops, yields, crops), directions of vegetable development, production of vegetable products, trade with foreign countries and their products. The paper uses such sources of information as: research literature, market analysis of the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Food Economy, publications of the Central Statistical Office – yearbooks. The collected information has been developed and interpreted using a set of methods, including statistical and comparative in vertical form. The assessment of self-sufficiency was done by technical and economic indicators. There was a decrease in the area of vegetable cultivation, the increase in yield and large fluctuations in the size of the crop. The trade balance of fresh and processed vegetables is generally positive. In years 2010 and 2011 it was negative. There is a steady positive balance of trade with the EU-12 and CIS countries, although exports from these countries have fallen since 2013 - especially Russia. On the other hand, the import of vegetables increases. The permanently negative balance is with the EU-15 and other countries.

The purpose of an article was to analyse changes in the size and structure of trade in agri-food products with Germany in the years 2003-2015. There were used data of the Polish Ministry of Finance published by IRIGZ-PIB as well as information from Eurostat and WITS-Comtrade databases. Trade in agri-food products with Germany is gradually increasing, both on the export and import side. Despite the upward trend in trade with Germany in the years 2003-2015, its assortment structure has changed. Calculated TC index indicates export surplus over import of most product groups. The analysis of the SI indicator also confirmed the specialization of Polish agri-food products targeted at the German market for 14 out of 23 assortment groups. The high values of the GL indicator for most agri-food product groups confirm the growing position of their producers.

The purpose of the scientific article is the attempt of determining the level of human capital of persons from the oldest age groups who live in rural areas of Southeastern Poland. The selection of research topic has a relationship with the demographic changes which take place both in Poland and in the whole Europe. They bring about a number of changes which affect almost all areas of life of modern societies. The research was conducted in 2015 on a sample of 150 people over the age of 60 in the counties of Nowy Targ and Myślenice located in the Małopolska Voivodeship. The level of human capital of the surveyed seniors can be described as relatively low. The structure of education, occupational and educational activity (in the field of increasing knowledge and acquiring new skills), moreover self-assessment of their health status and taking actions aimed at improving it, for example through physical activity, confirm it.

The article presents changes that occurred in the production of electricity from renewable energy sources in the EU-28 and in Poland in the years of 2010-2015. The analysis of the changes was based on the data from Eurostat and the Local Data Bank. Based on the indicator of the share of electricity generated from renewable sources in gross electricity consumption, Poland in the period under discussion, was characterized as one of the highest dynamics of change among all EU countries. In addition, the article analyzes the situation concerning the production of electricity in Poland in the regional aspect. From the taken analyzes, it is clear that in all voivodeships, apart from Małopolskie voivodeship, in 2015, more electricity was produced from renewable sources compared to 2010. In the period under discussion, the share of electricity production from renewable sources in total electricity production also increased by 99% in Poland.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible in Polish conditions to create one national quality system. One system allows for better recognition for all market stakeholders. It enables broader participation in the system for national and in future foreign entities. Such system also prevents an information chaos. A single system also common in the EU countries. Presentation of the foundations of the system in some EU countries is both the additional and actually a primary objective of this article.

The progressive fragmentation of production results in the creation of global supply chains. Individual countries export domestic value-added products often with increasing share of foreign value-added. Measuring trade with added value helps to define the importance of exports in the economy. The aim of the paper is to present the changes that have occurred in the export of food industry measured with value-added and the indication that the industry is increasingly involved in global supply chains. The analysis used data from 1995-2011 developed by the OECD/WTO in the TiVA database. The study confirmed that the importance of exports of food products is underestimated in the traditional sense of gross exports of Poland. In the analyzed period there was an increase in export of foreign value-added services. This indicates an increasing share of the food industry in global supply chains.

The main goal of the article was to discuss the importance of introducing short supply chains in the context of minimizing the adverse effects of traditional supply chains. The paper presents a case study of the Local Product of Malopolska as an example of good practice. When analyzing the concept of shortened supply chains, some significant benefits for agricultural producers, consumers and the region can be noticed. Reduction of the food chain links brings more benefits to farmers, and can contribute to avoiding the Forrester`s effect repercussions. Short food chains can be used to promote a region, as well as organic, local or traditional products. Despite the weaknesses of the local dimension of this concept, the idea contributes to sustainable development, which links economic goals, with social and environmental objectives. Presented reflections do not exhaust the subject, but only signal a topic that requires a holistic approach to the subject.

The so-called "big enlargement" of the European Union in 2004 triggered many changes in the functioning of individual agricultural markets. They concerned agricultural producers, processors and distributors from new but also old members of the EU. The aim of the study is to analyze changes in volume and structure in pig production in EU with particular focus on changes in the position of countries which joined the EU after 2004. The analysis covered the years 2005-2016. Statistical materials from Eurostat database were used. The basic statistical methods of data analysis were used in the study. In the analyzed years, with the general trend of pork production growth in the EU, there have been significant changes in its size in individual countries. There has been a significant increase in production in so-called old EU countries. The main beneficiaries of the in the pork market in the EU area were livestock producers and processors from Germany and Spain. In the countries which joined the EU after 2004, there has generally been a downward trend in volume of production, with the largest declines in most countries observed in 2009.

The main objective of this article is to discuss the diversity of European Union countries based on selected indicators of labour market in rural areas. Presented data come from 2015 (in comparison with 2013). The analysis was conducted using the cluster analysis. The following diagnostic features were used for the analysis: employment persons as a share of total 20-64 y. o. population, unemployment rate for the age group 15-74 in total active population, youth unemployment rate for the age group 15-24 in total active population and labour productivity. As a result of the cluster analysis examined regions were divided into five groups.

The article attempts to identify the most important changes in the international trade of pork and pigs after the announcement of the embargo by the Russia. For the verification of the main goal of article were used the analysis of changes over time and an analysis of the structure of the total foreign trade (exports and imports) and with Russia in 2011-2015. The used data come from the Ministry of Finance. The situation on the domestic pork market in 2014 was difficult due to the significant increase in pork production both in Poland and in the EU, the occurrence of the ASF (and related restrictions on exports to many third countries), and introduction the embargo by Russia, which was one of major buyers of pork products exported from Poland. As a result, the geographic structure of exports had changed. In the analyzed period Poland was a net importer of pork products and the foreign trade balance of these products with Russia was positive.

The research is based on the data from the ComExt Database in the resources of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service's Global Agricultural Trade System. It was proved that in 2001-2016 the EU and the US were important trade partners for each other, but the value of bilateral trade in agri-food products remained relatively small, largely due to low complementarity of the Polish and American agriculture and the resulting minor demand for agricultural products from the temperate zone in the US. These products are made in the US, usually at a lower cost, and they are the export surplus of this country. The way to intensify the EU-US bilateral trade may be to develop a transatlantic free trade area, resulting in a strong effect of trade creation between the TTIP parties, with a limited impact on the relationship with other trading partners.

In the convention of economic growth analysis and in relation to the concept of production function, it was derived an analytical model of growth in agriculture. On this basis, isolating the endogenous and exogenous sources of growth it was defined first analytically and then empirically the role of the capital factor as an endogenous source of growth in agriculture. It was made the empirical verification for the agriculture of Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom using Eurostat data.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the variability of the foreign trade herbs and spices in the world and attempt to identify common patterns. The article presents the value of export and import of herbs and spices in US dollars in top-20 countries. The source materials constituted data of FAOSTAT. The study period covered the 2007-2015. In 2007-2015, foreign trade herbs and spices in the world has increased. The value of exports and imports in 2015 was at a similar level of around 2.2-2.4 billion USD. The largest exporters of herbs and spices were China and India, while the importers were USA and Saudi Arabia. The greatest decline in herbs and spices exports was recorded in 2009-2010, and in imports in 2009. In the case of countries with the largest exports of changes in individual years they were violent, and in the case of imports moderate. During the period considered important, very strong, positive relationship of herbs and spice imports with economic parameters determined by the GDP value, the value of exports and imports, and the average and weak with reference to exports of herbs and spices (but only after coming out of the economic crisis).

The study presents changes in world beef production in the years 2000-2016. Changes in the main producers and consumers, as well as exporters and importers were presented. In the world's major beef producers, consumption growth was lower than production growth, what increased their export capacity. In the years 2000-2016, the growth rate of international trade was higher than production, what led to an increase in the share of exports in production. Particularly high growth in production and exports was noticeable in Brazil and India. Prices of beef were characterized by an upward trend. In Poland there was an upward trend in beef production and decline in consumption. Foreign markets are the main direction for the development of rising production. . These changes were the result of price competitiveness of Polish beef, both on the EU and other markets. By 2025, further growth in beef production in Poland may be possible resulting mainly from foreign demand.

Agriculture is the second, after energy sector, emitter of greenhouse gasses (GHG), of which increased concentrations in the atmosphere are caused by human activities. In order to reduce GHG, parties ratifying the Kioto protocol have committed to prepare annual emission reports and pledged to reduce emissions. The aim of the study was to analyse changes of agricultural emissions in the World, the European Union (EU) and Poland in 1990-2014. The research uses the United Nations Food and Agricultural database (FAOSTAT), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Chang (UNFCCC) and World Resources Institute (CAIT) databases. The analysis shows that in the World, in the examined period the total GHG emissions increased by 85%, whereas in agriculture by 15%. However, the EU as a member of Annex I parties had reduced total and agricultural emissions by 24% and 23%, respectively. The reduction of emissions was the result of the implementation of pro-environmental regulations.

The food industry is an important economic sector in Poland and Spain, two EU countries with the most similar production and land-use potential. The aim of the article was to compare the directions and pace of development of this industry against the EU. Spain, after its accession to the Community, has developed economically and infrastructurally. In recent years, however, the effects of the global economic crisis have been strongly affected Spain economy. It also affected the food industry, which is relatively less susceptible to fluctuations in economic conditions. For Poland this is an instructive experience, because after its accession to the EU it develops in a similar way. The analysis of activity results of the Polish food industry is evidence of its rapid growth and its ability to compete with Spain in the future mainly in the dairy and feed industry.

The aim of the paper is to analyze and evaluate the position of the key currencies as a determinant of changes in the functioning of the international monetary system. Methodology includes theoretical studies (scientific literature and research reports) and empirical studies (statistical analysis of BIS, IMF, SWIFT, ECB, UNCTAD data). The analysis makes it possible to conclude that the dollar remains the main international currency, and the creation of a single currency area in the EU has not led to the expected changes in the main currencies positions as well as the euro has not reached the position of the second global currency competing effectively against the dollar as a global currency. Moreover, the growing economic and trade potential of China and the transformation of the global economic power are not reflected in the changes of developing countries’ currencies positions in the functions of global money. The presented scenarios of the IMS transformation do not give a clear answer about the future of the key currencies, but the implementation of a single global currency seems too difficult in the current conditions.

The article presents analysis of price variability of broiler chicken meat in EU countries in period 2007-2016. Descriptive statistics were calculated and decomposition of time series of prices were performed. The production of meat broiler chicken in EU in year 2007 amounted 8, 76 million ton and increased to the level of 10,98 million ton in year 2014. The biggest producers in year 2014 were: Poland (14,9%), Great Britain (13,1%), Spain (11,2%), France (10,0%) and Germany (9,4%). The highest prices were in: Germany, Finland, Cyprus and the lowest in: Poland, Great Britain and Bulgaria. Variability of prices was higher in countries with lower level of prices while in countries where prices were higher, they were also more stable. Prices of broiler chickens in EU are distinguished by seasonality. Higher prices are in summer and lower in late autumn and winter. Countries with highest seasonal changes are as follows: Poland (20% in average), Portugal (15%), Belgium (11%) and Great Britain (10%).

Main goal of the paper was to present the functioning of LAG Krasnik area as an example of rural areas activation in EU country - Poland. The operation of the LAG carrying out its activity in the area of one of the poorest regions of the European Union, the Lubelski Region, includes the Kraśnik district. The method used in the paper is a diagnostic survey using a questionnaire and interviews. The survey encompassed 96 members of the LAG. In their opinion LAG contributed to the development of non-agricultural activities and promotion of the area as well as reduction in unemployment. Outstanding natural features and landscapes as well as existing investment infrastructure were considered crucial qualities of the area and support for the local activity was thought to be the main goal of the LAG. Strategy of the LAG contributed to development of the region and to switching towards non-agricultural activities what was its core premise.
