Słowa kluczowe | bioeconomy, biotechnologies, innovations, agricultural biomass |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | The article examines the need and possibility of introducing bioeconomy in the management system of the national economy, in the context of the focus on sustainable development through the use of the most modern techniques and technologies for the use of biomass. It is determined that the key role in the development of a new direction of the country's economy is played by the agricultural sector, as the bioeconomy of agricultural systems is based on agricultural biomass and biotechnology. Optimization of agricultural biomass flows is one of the components of bioeconomy development. It is noted that, given the significant natural and economic, raw material research and production potential and state support, Ukraine has great opportunities for bioeconomy development based on the production of environmentally friendly bioenergy products through the efficient use of agricultural biomass. The legal bases of the state management of the bioeconomic development of Ukraine are stated. |

Title | Genetically Modified Crops’ Technology and its Awareness among Smallholder Farmers in Nigeria |
Słowa kluczowe | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Key words | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Abstrakt | Genetically Modified (GM) crops are crops modified through genetic engineering to improve their quality. Although safety concerns about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still being debated, the food security benefits have led to adoption by many counties. In Nigeria, where most farmers are uneducated and likely unaware of the agricultural technology, the government approved its first biotechnology crop for commercialization in 2018. Level of farmers’ awareness is crucial to acceptance of GM crops, although; this has not been fully explored in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to assess farmers’ awareness for GM crops and the factors that determine their awareness in Oyo state, Nigeria, using primary data collected in 2018 with the aid of well-structured questionnaires from 242 smallholder farmers. Principal component analysis and Tobit regression model were used for data analysis. Results showed that farmers were aged 43 years with farm size of 3.57 ha, farming experience of 14 years and 11 years of education. Most farmers were male (71.90%), married (67.36%), not members of farmer groups (64.46%) and sourced their seeds from non-credible sources (85.12%). Most farmers (52.07%) had either not heard of or did not know of any benefits/costs of GM crops, hence; were not aware of GM crops. Factors that influenced awareness of GM crops were being a male farmer, years of education and source of seeds. The study concluded that increasing years of education and ensuring use of credible seed sources will increase awareness of the costs and benefits of GM crops among farmers. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The importance of biotech crops have risen dramatically in the last two decades since their first commercialization. The area of those crops is increasing fast. Soybeans, maize, canola and cotton represent almost 100 percent of area cultivated with biotech crops globally. The number of countries growing biotech crops is also increasing, however currently the United States, Brazil and Argentina are responsible for the largest share of biotech crops among all countries. In 2016, those countries accounted for more than 81% of total world biotech crop area. Judging the potential to introduce new biotechnology, currently the country with the highest number of biotechnology companies is the US followed by Spain and France. In terms of spending on R&D the US is followed by France, Switzerland and South Korea. It must be noted that the highest number of biotech companies and the highest spending is concentrated in the US. Agricultural biotechnology constitute only a small percentage of all biotechnology R&D expenditures. |

Title | Development of Ukrainian’s knowledge based bioeconomy – towards a system of innovations’ diffusion based on quadruple helix model |
Słowa kluczowe | biogospodarka oparta na wiedzy, dyfuzja innowacji, model poczwórnej helisy, Ukraina |
Key words | knowledge based bioeconomy, innovation diffusion, quadruple helix model, Ukraine |
Abstract | The paper is an attempts to assess the state of development of the knowledge based bioeconomy in Ukraine. It also aims to evaluate how the current development complies in line with the concept of innovation diffusion model based on quadruple helix, and through, identify the most important factors strengthening and limiting this development. It was found that Ukraine has significant potential of production factors, in particular biomass, which so far is in limited scale used for the needs of a knowledge-based bioeconomy that is in infancy. The main reason is the low level of diffusion of innovation, mainly in the field of biotechnology. The current development in a low degree is based on the concept of quadruple helix, which on other hands also represents a high potential of growth for the coming years. Adequately oriented economic policies would greatly affect the development of a knowledge-based bioeconomy in Ukraine. |

Abstract | Technology development is a crucial issue for economic development in Sub-Saharan African countries. In this paper current research on biotechnology and the potential of biotechnology absorption in Kenya is analyzed. The institutional character, areas of research and funding mechanisms of the research institutions contributing to agriculture sector technological advancements were examined in the context of local farmer’s needs. Also factors, such as legal framework and cultural and social values for the biotechnology research in the region were explored. Literature review and the qualitative analysis of data on research facilities and the papers from the region were applied in the research. OLS correlation method was applied in the analysis of the data. |
