Abstrakt | Defining the state of competitiveness for a particular agricultural sector is of great importance. By retaining a competitive market position sustainable economic development of the specific agricultural production is supported. Continuation of its multiple economic functions like providing raw materials for the processing industry, securing rural employment, and utilization of scarce agricultural resources is the focus of competi_x0002_tiveness goals. In the economic theory, there is no unified definition for competitiveness, while there are a va_x0002_riety of approaches to measure it, which is reflected in different applied theoretical frameworks. The research aims to compare the competitiveness of the Bulgarian dairy sector versus the EU, the USA, and New Zealand dairy sectors on the world market for the period after the accession of Bulgaria in the EU. Therefore, a con_x0002_ceptual framework has been chosen developed by Canada’s Task Force for Competitiveness. The framework is based on the ability to gain and sustainably maintain market share. For the chosen period the results show a trend of decline in the competitiveness of the Bulgarian dairy sector and improvement in the competitive_x0002_ness of the EU dairy sector. For the EU comparison, indexes of competitiveness have been calculated for the USA and New Zealand. The USA’s index slightly decreased at the end of the explored period reflecting the increased competition on the world markets while New Zealand’s high index values reveal its position as a leading dairy products exporter. |

Słowa kluczowe | common agricultural policy, globalisation, integration |
Key words | common agricultural policy, globalisation, integration |
Abstrakt | The planned CAP reform will determine the capacity of EU agriculture in facing challenges, especially those related to climate change and growing international competition. The aim of the paper is to assess the EC’s reform proposals in the context of globalisation and integration processes. The paper is based on the analysis of the EC’s proposals for the CAP 2021-2027. The results show that the proposed changes in the CAP are limited and they do not ensure significant support for the agricultural sector. They also are not adequately precise to evaluate them. Moreover, the proposed change in the CAP implementation model poses a serious risk of the CAP disintegration, which will not help the EU in its trade talks with other partners and thus can be detrimental to the future of the EU agri-food sector. It seems that the first step to make the CAP more effective is to strengthen its monitoring system. |

Słowa kluczowe | produkcja malin, eksport malin, produkcja wiśni, eksport wiśni |
Key words | raspberry production, raspberry export, sour cherry production, sour cherry export |
Do analizy produkcji owoców wykorzystano dane pochodzące z bazy Faostat, a wielkości eksportu – dane z bazy Comtrade. |
Abstract | The aim of the study was to examine the changes in production and export of raspberries and sour cherries, which are the domain of Polish production on the international markets, in the countries of Eastern and Southern Europe during the 2006-2017. There was used data from Faostat database for the analysis of fruit production, and from Comtrade database for the analysis of export volume. Study points to the development of production and an increase in the export of raspberries in countries with a smaller area of cultivation of this fruit crops and stability in countries with a large area of crops of raspberries. In the case of sour cherries, in most countries, both large and small area plantings, production potential, and volume of production of fruit of this species declined. The export of sour cherries increased particularly from countries with less potential in the production of sour cherries. The development of the production and export of raspberries from countries with lower production capacity may in the future be competition for Poland on the international markets. |

Key words | agro-sector, European Union, correlation and regression, financial efficiency, food product, financial economy, productivity & profitability, resource efficiency |
Abstrakt | Economic literature pays a great deal of attention to economic and financial efficiency, expressed in terms of competition, concentration, productivity and profitability. This paper provides an all-embracing framework for the various existing theories in this area and illustrates these theories with practical applications. Currently, changing the size of the production potential in agricultural units in the Republic of Moldova depends to a great extent on the influence of different trends in the modification of production resources: the reduction of labor resources and agricultural land, quantitative and qualitative changes in fixed assets, and in current assets, etc.The notion of resource potential means the totality of the volume of all resources (natural, labor, material, intellectual, information, etc.) on specific enterprises, territories, branches, regions. Evaluating a broad field of research, the paper describes profit maximizing food products and demonstrates how several widely-used products can be fit into this framework. The authors also present an overview of the current major trends in the food sector and relate them to the assumptions for food products, thereby displaying their relevance and timeliness. The results include a set of recommendations for future research on this topic. The design, methodology and approach of this research is to explain why efficiency can help obtain a profit surplus, and to measure this efficiency. For quality of methodology we apply a range of statistical methods, as well as the strategic capability of organisations – made up of resources and competences. One way to approach the stategic capability of an organisation is to consider its strengths and weaknesses (for example, where it has a competitive advantage, profit, efficiency or disadvantage). Based on our research and results, we sought to understand the concepts of financial effciency and to apply these concepts to practical situations. At the start of each analysis entrepreneurship plays an important role. Most organisations have to innovate constantly to obtain profit and efficiency for food products. They need to be first into a market, or simply a follower of customers in developing new products and services. Original studies in Moldova and Poland regarding farm concentration in terms of Gini Coefficient, Gini Index and Concentration Index of the utilized agricultural area. Original calculus formula to determine the Concentration Index of the UAA for the top 10% largest farms in Moldova and UK. |

Słowa kluczowe | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Key words | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Abstrakt | Biomass is a major source of renewable energy in the EU and Poland, stimulating the growth of the wood pellet sector. Wood pellet demand is stimulated by a complex interaction of market forces and policies including EU climate, energy, and environmental regulations, Poland’s program to improve air quality, and subsidies for the replacement of inefficient stoves used by households. This article focuses on the growth of the wood pellet industry, imports and exports in Poland, and wood pellet quality and use by households. The main issues faced by the EU wood pellet sector between 2013 and 2016 are further considered in the context of opinions of Polish wood pellet manufacturers. Industry opinions were collected in response to an open-ended question that probed for the main issues faced by wood pellet producers during the survey implemented by the authors in 2019. Respondents identified difficulties in obtaining raw material for pellet production and poor pellet quality as major problems. Although the majority did not feel concerned about competition from imported wood pellets, a small number of respondents viewed such competition as a problem reflecting the reversal of decreasing imports in 2017. Overall, the domestic wood pellet industry can be expected to grow because of increasing pressure to expand the use of renewable energy and will be driven by the household sector switching to more efficient, wood burning stoves. Additionally, the expanding area of private Polish forests may become a source of much-needed raw material for wood pellet manufacturing. |

Tytuł | STRATEGIES FOR INTERNATIONAL ENTERPRISE COMPETITION |
Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | business, environment, reputation, market, barriers |
Key words | biznes, środowisko, renoma, rynek, bariery |
Abstrakt | The main aim of this paper is analyzed the role, importance and methodology for creating the strategies for international competition, as well as the ways of implementing and evaluating the selected strategies. This is done by applying exploratory, descriptive and casual methods to outperform competitors and determine the scope of an enterprise’s engagement in international business. The article examines forces and steps of planning, implementing and evaluating a business strategy. Enterprises must recognize and compare the factors that compose foreign environments, especially the state and local governmental politics, legal regulations, economic and financial forces, cultural differences, business ethics, technological development, infrastructure, natural resources protections, sociological and demographic issues. Three competitive strategies have been distinguished: cost leadership, differentiation and focus. Virtues of M. Porter’s five forces model: threat of new entry, competitive rivalry, supplier power, buyer power and threat of substitutes have been considered. The selection of the target markets and recognizing customers preferences belong to the most important tasks of strategic planning. An enterprise can select three levels of international involvement: passive participation, active involvement and taking the international position. Foreign countries impose barriers on international trade, but international agreements facilitate healthy competition. |
Abstract | Głównym celem artykułu jest analiza roli, znaczenia i metodologii opracowywania koncepcji strategii międzynarodowego biznesu oraz sposobów wdrażania i oceny wybranych strategii. Przedstawiono, metody pokonania konkurentów i skale zaangażowania przedsiębiorstwa w prowadzenie międzynarodowego biznesu. Artykuł rozpatruje czynniki determinujące międzynarodową przewagę konkurencyjną i etapy jej planowania, wdrażania i oceny. Przedsiębiorstwa musza poznać i porównywać czynniki determinujące obce środowisko, a w szczególności krajowa politykę regulacje prawne, czynniki ekonomiczne i finansowe, różnice kulturowe, etykę prowadzenia biznesu, postęp technologiczny, infrastrukturę, ochronę naturalnego środowiska oraz kwestie społeczne i demograficzne. Wyniki analizy pozwoliły na wyróżnienie najbardziej cenionych przedsiębiorstw na świecie. Trzy strategie konkurowania zostały omówione: lidera niskich kosztów, dywersyfikacji i koncentracji. Wyróżniono walory pięciu czynników konkurencji M. Portera: nasilenia istniejącej konkurencji, zagrożenia ze strony nowych konkurentów, negocjacyjnej siły dostawców, negocjacyjnej siły nabywców i zagrożenia pojawienia się nowych substytutów. Wybór rynków docelowych i rozpoznanie preferencji konsumentów stanowi ważny element planowania strategicznego. Przedsiębiorstwo może dokonać wyboru trzy poziomy międzynarodowego zaangażowania: udział bierny, aktywne zaangażowanie i ustalenie pozycji międzynarodowej. Obcy kraj może nakładać bariery na handel międzynarodowy, lecz międzynarodowe porozumienia ułatwiają wolną konkurencje. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The sugar industry, as one of the most regulated food industries in the EU, has been given great challenge due to the sugar quota elimination in 2017. Both in the Czech Republic and Poland, sugar industry underwent significant transformation over last 20 years and mainly after the EU accession. Due to EU’s 2006 sugar reform led to significant reduction in number of production facilities. In both countries, we observed improved production of sugar beet driven equally by intensification and extensification in Poland and by extensification forces in the Czech Republic. Reduction in number of refineries also decreased number of competitors which led to market concentration. Conducted Herfindahl-Hirschman analyses proved, that Polish market face lower level of concentration in comparison to Czech market, which is dominated mainly by Tereos TTD and Moravskoslezke curkovary. Even though Krajowa Spółka Cukrowa also dominate the Polish market, other producers also take advantage of their position. KSC is under the increasing competition of German sugar producers (Südzucker Polska; Pfeifer&Langen; Nordzucker Polska). |

Abstract | The ongoing socio-economic transformations in Poland, including the processes of liberalization and globalization, increased competition and changing expectations of buyers cause the conditions in which agriculture operates to be more and more complex. The purpose of the research was to identify barriers to the development of farms, in the opinion of farmers who in their operation used land from the Agricultural Property Resources of the State Treasury (ZWRSP). The study covered 167 farms located in the area of Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The obtained results were presented for the entire studied group and according to the form of land management from the ZWRSP. The research shows that the development of farms, according to the respondents, is mainly inhibited by cost and price factors, such as: unstable purchase prices, high costs of agricultural production, high prices for means of production and lack of capital for development. |

Abstrakt | Tendencies in national actions against foreign products currently observed in the European Union indicate protectionism or at least discrimination. The aim of this article is describe economic mechanisms of applying selected import-related policy instruments of Member States and to identify some potential directions of their impact on the functioning of the EU agri-food internal market. The presented mechanisms are related to three situations: (a) hindering the market entry through retargeting of consumer demand; (b) promotion of own products contrary to the fair rules of competition; (c) limiting economic activity of foreign companies. The analyses carried out allowed to identify economic activity areas, where negative effects could reveal and to state that the potential result of these activities may be selective reduction of trade or change of its directions. |

Słowa kluczowe | financial support, lifelong learning system, public goods, private goods. |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | In the article the essence and main characteristics of public and private goods are investigated, their main differences are revealed. Based on this, the main features of public goods were identified, including the nature of consumption, exclusivity of consumption, level of competition in providing services, exhaustiveness of services, level of social significance, etc. A comparative analysis of the peculiarities of funding for education at different levels (primary, secondary education, post-secondary/total tertiary education) and funding sources (public and private expenditures) has been conducted. It is substantiated that the basis for determining the optimal financial support structure for LLS development should be the level of compliance of educational services with the criteria for meeting public and private goods. On the basis of this, it was found that the ratio of budget and extrabudgetary funding for basic education services should be 90 to 10%; for vocational education services – 60–70% to 30–40%; and for services of additional education – 20–40% to 60–80%. |

Wicki L. Changes in land use for production of energy crops in Poland

Title | Zmiany powierzchni produkcji roślin energetycznych w Polsce |
Słowa kluczowe | bioenergia, bioetanol, biodiesel, biogaz, konkurencja żywność – energia |
Key words | bioenergy, bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, food–energy competition |
Produkcja bioenergii w oparciu o surowce pochodzenia rolniczego silnie wzrastała w analizowanym okresie, z 5 TJ w 2005 roku to 42 TJ w 2016 roku. Udział powierzchni gruntów ornych przeznaczanych do produkcji surowców do wytwarzania biopaliw wynosił 5,6% w 2016 roku. |
Abstract | The goal of the article is to evaluate whether production of modern biofuels in Poland competes with food production. CSO and AMA data have been used in the analysis. The data in question refers to the area of arable land in Poland, yields and livestock as well as renewable energy production structure and quantity and production of biodiesel, bioethanol and agricultural biogas. Data concerning quantity of raw materials used for production of the agricultural biogas have been accessed from AMA . Data for 2005-2016 have been collected. Production of bioenergy based on agricultural raw materials has significantly increased. From 2005 to 2016, it increased from 5 to 42 TJ . Approximately 92% of bioenergy from agricultural sources are bioethanol and biodiesel produced from the first generation of raw materials, the production of which is in direct competition with food production. The share of biogas was 8% only. Waste constituted 75% in the raw materials used to produce biogas. The area of production of energy crops has reached 5.6% of arable land in 2016 from 1.5% in 2005. It means that in Poland production of bioenergy from agricultural sources competes with food and feed production and its further increase is not desirable. Actions focused on the increased use of the second generation raw materials for energy production and decreased use of food raw materials should be taken. |

Title | Innovation and marketing strategies of enterprises on the innovative food products market |
Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | innovation, innovative product, innovative food product, innovative strategy, FMCG sector |
Abstrakt | |
Abstract | The purpose of the present paper is to identify the particular use of marketing strategies for innovative products and to define the features thereof. Innovative food products can be defined as those made of unconventional materials, with the use of the latest technologies and new methods of processing and storage, and/or innovative tools of marketing promotion. In the paper I show that innovative strategy is a leading functional strategy of high-tech enterprises. It involves producing a comprehensive set of measures for improving technological aspects of the production process, changes in the company’s organisational structure, and the implementation of modern management technologies. The strategy requires companies to act consistently, which allows them to position themselves in the market. A change in strategy is a response to changing external conditions. Innovative food products belong to the FMCG market, which is characterised by tough competition and oversupply. Forming effective strategies, creating successful brands and profitable business activity in this market requires an approach tailored to this market. Strategies of leading brands in the FMCG sector include seeking out prospects in emerging markets, acquiring leaders in profitable and attractive segments and forming alliances with competitors. |

Title | Distribution of products for agriculture in Poland – in search of new sources of competitive advantage |
Słowa kluczowe | kanał dystrybucji, dystrybutor, rolniczy łańcuch wartości |
Key words | distribution channel, distributor, agricultural value chain |
Abstract | The distribution of agricultural products in Poland is considered to be relatively weak compared to other European countries. There is a huge number of small players whose strategies are based primarily on price competition. This situation, however, after Poland’s accession to the European Union began to change rapidly. The number of players began to decrease, distributors have overtaken the roles of wholesalers and retailers. The distribution model in Poland is still evolving, adjusting the offer to dynamic changes to meet the expectations of customers. Individual elements of the agricultural value chain seek new opportunities to create and capture the highest margins in the portfolio of companies that participate in the production and delivery of a product to a farmer. The goal of this study is to present changes in distribution as a link in the agricultural value chain. The author will more broadly present new phenomena in this market, such as agricultural advisory services and the organization of financing the economic activity of farmers. The publication is the result of a research study based on data from TNS Polska and Ibris conducted in 2015 and observations as Vice President of GA Puławy responsible for this area. |

Słowa kluczowe | komunikacja marketingowa, reklama, uwarunkowania kulturowe, zachowania konsumenta, artykuły żywnościowe |
Key words | marketing communications, advertising, cultural determinants, consumer behaviour, food products |
Abstract | Functioning on foreign markets under the conditions of high competition and cultural diversity requires companies to take actions related to adapting their offer to purchasers’ expectations. This applies in particular to marketing communication, including advertising. The aim of this article is to analyse consumers’ approach to cultural adaptation of advertising, analysing consumers making purchases under the influence of advertising and those not affected by it, according to sex and age. Based on the findings of empirical study of Polish population, the authors examine the correlation between the assessment of the above mentioned phenomenon and the variables characterising the sample. The presented findings indicate that Polish consumers regard the phenomenon itself as important; however, the study has not pointed to any statistically significant differences in the opinions of the examined sample with regard to consumers’ demographic characteristics or degree of susceptibility to food products advertising. |
