Abstract | The worldwide literature on the socio-economic impacts of the Covid-19 is extensive, covering individual enterprises and markets, economic sectors or branches, or the national and global economy. The current study is unique as it is a comprehensive compilation of the relevant evidence regarding economic entities and sectors of global or international significance and the societal groups from an angle of so-called "pandemic game" with some implications for the agri-food economy. Its main aim is to identify the actual and potential winners and losers of the pandemic. The winners’ notion covers actors, e.g. economic sectors or people groups those extraordinarily benefited or will benefit from a pandemic, extremely upgrading their financial or other performance. In turn, the losers include individuals or entities that incurred unusual costs or losses, worsened their results, or probably will face such pandemic consequences in the future. Some economic ideas also are considered. The article is based on the scientific, popular and grey literature as well as publicly available data to support research. The research uses deductive explanation methods. Results show that the biopharmaceutical industry, leading digital companies, shareholders in international retail chains, global financial holdings, food delivery companies, and the World’s richest people are among those who thrived exceptionally well in the new living and doing business conditions and can therefore be admitted as the current crisis’ winners. Adversely, the coronavirus victims, energy and air transport sectors, and food processing labour, all of them being harmfully affected by the pandemic, are examples of losers. Albeit the presented winners and losers represent various spheres of economic life, they are more or less related to the agriculture and food processing industry. The study confirms that the functioning and condition of the latter depend on the situation of other economic sectors, agents, and markets, and international disturbances spreading within an open economy. The paper can be of interest both to the research community, and decision-makers in different economic and social policy areas. |

Słowa kluczowe | bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, energy safety, energy consumption, renewable energy sources, production potential, alternative kinds of fuel |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | Bearing in mind a serious dependence of Ukraine on the import of oil products, it isof great significance for Ukraine to develop own manufacture and to increase the share of oilproduct substitution with biofuel. It is not possible to develop biofuel market without solvinga number of economic and organizational problems, which is why it is expedient to introducefinancial-economic stimuli for biofuel producers and to build a stable demand for alternativekinds of fuel. In Ukraine the manufacture of alternative fuels almost terminated, however thesolution of the problem of biofuel manufacture will depend on the coordination of joint actionsof the state, participants of market relations and the development of the system of measuresaimed at the creation of pre-conditions to enhance a competitive biofuel market in Ukraine, taking into consideration foreign experience and current tendencies of the manufacture anduse of the alternative energy sources. |

Abstrakt | The article examines the role of the bioeconomy in the formation of priorities for the economic development of Ukraine. It is determined that the primary goal of the bioeconomy is the optimal use of renewable biological resources and the creation of sustainable manufacturing systems for new products. It is noted that Ukraine belongs to the countries with high bioeconomic potential, the source of which is the production of biomass of agricultural origin that creates favorable conditions for the development of the bioeconomy. The dynamics of biomass production potential are characterized by a stable increase in the amount of biomass available for use, and its energy capacity is analysed. Using the methodology of 'smart specialization', a model of strategy formation was developed, which defines the priorities, goals, and objectives of the bioeconomic development of Ukraine's economy. |

Title | Supply of Materials to the Agribusiness Sector of European Union Countries |
Słowa kluczowe | material supply, agribusiness, food industry, agriculture, European Union |
Key words | material supply, agribusiness, food industry, agriculture, European Union |
Abstrakt | The purpose of this paper was to assess the prevailing relationships in the supply structure of the agribusiness sector in European Union countries over the years. The study focused on 25 European Union countries (Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta were excluded) to address the changes in the supply structures of agriculture and food industries, the two major components of agribusiness. The study was of a dynamic nature. Although the study period was 2000–2014, this paper only presents the figures for the first and the last year, i.e. 2000 and 2014. The main focus was on drawing conclusions on the trends observed which proved to be relatively stable in the years covered. The input–output analysis was used by aggregating the sectors of the economy for a better transparency of the inference process. As shown by this study, EU countries at higher development levels witness a decline in the share of the chemical industry in the mix of goods and services supplied to agriculture. Conversely, less developed countries saw that ratio increase. Also, the share of goods supplied to agriculture from the fuel and energy sectors goes up in most EU countries. As regards the food industry, this study observed high shares of agriculture, services and self-supply in the supply structure of EU countries. This analysis extends the existing knowledge on the relationships in the structure of materials supplied to the agribusiness because in addition to agriculture itself (which was addressed by similar studies found in literature) it takes account of the food industry. Moreover, based on long-term observations, it endeavors to capture the prevailing relationships in several countries at a time. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The article analyzes the domestic and world methods of assessing the level of foodsecurity. The national peculiarities of food security are considered, its level in Ukraine is analyzedaccording to the indicators of daily energy value of human diet, consumption of differenttypes of food per capita, food structure and food independence. The calculated indicators ofadequacy of consumption for certain foods are quite low, in particular: fish and fish products;fruits, berries and grapes; milk and dairy products; meat and meat products. These indicatorsare evidence of an imbalance in the diet of the population, which is trying to provide their ownenergy needs through more affordable products. The key problem of food security in Ukrainetoday is the affordability of products. It is the low purchasing power of the population that insome way hinders the development of production and the economy as a whole. |

Title | Zużycie energii i emisja dwutlenku węgla w sektorze transportu: badanie sektorowych polityki fiskalnej |
Słowa kluczowe | transportation, fiscal policy, carbon tax |
Key words | transport, polityka podatkowa, podatek węglowy |
Abstrakt | As the energy sector worldwide is largely based on fossil fuel consumption, the amount of global-scale carbon emissions continues to increase over the years. One of the most important reasons for the increase in emissions, the transportation sector, continues to develop with globalization. The development of land, sea, and air transport together with international trade brings environmental problems in parallel with the increase in energy consumption. Accordingly, it is estimated that one fourth of total carbon emissions today originate from the transportation sector. In this context, in order to combat environmental problems such as global warming and climate change on an international scale, initiatives such as the Paris Climate Agreement are being implemented and environmental policies to reduce the amount of emissions are being recommended. The aim of this study is to examine environmental policies, which have been discussed extensively in the literature, in terms of fiscal policy. In this context, fiscal policy tools such as taxes, subsidies, incentives, and regulations specific to the transport sector were discussed. This study, in which the descriptive method is used, argues that fiscal policy practices can be an effective method in reducing the amount of carbon emissions. |
Rozwój transportu lądowego, morskiego i lotniczego wraz z handlem międzynarodowym i zwiększonym zużyciem energii powoduje problemy środowiskowe. |

Słowa kluczowe | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Key words | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Abstrakt | Biomass is a major source of renewable energy in the EU and Poland, stimulating the growth of the wood pellet sector. Wood pellet demand is stimulated by a complex interaction of market forces and policies including EU climate, energy, and environmental regulations, Poland’s program to improve air quality, and subsidies for the replacement of inefficient stoves used by households. This article focuses on the growth of the wood pellet industry, imports and exports in Poland, and wood pellet quality and use by households. The main issues faced by the EU wood pellet sector between 2013 and 2016 are further considered in the context of opinions of Polish wood pellet manufacturers. Industry opinions were collected in response to an open-ended question that probed for the main issues faced by wood pellet producers during the survey implemented by the authors in 2019. Respondents identified difficulties in obtaining raw material for pellet production and poor pellet quality as major problems. Although the majority did not feel concerned about competition from imported wood pellets, a small number of respondents viewed such competition as a problem reflecting the reversal of decreasing imports in 2017. Overall, the domestic wood pellet industry can be expected to grow because of increasing pressure to expand the use of renewable energy and will be driven by the household sector switching to more efficient, wood burning stoves. Additionally, the expanding area of private Polish forests may become a source of much-needed raw material for wood pellet manufacturing. |

Słowa kluczowe | food waste, consumer attitude, sustainable consumption |

Abstrakt | With the increase of food supply and the improvement of production processes, the real value of certain food products has been steadily declining over the past decades, which is certainly a trend that has seriously transformed the moral value of food, its role in society and its associated personal attitudes. According to UN and FAO estimates, in 2016, 30-35% of our food was wasted. Food waste in households is also a special area of research in terms of their high wasting rate. While exploring the causes of high amounts of consumer waste, a research group has also correlated (with mathematical models) the gradual growth rate of food waste, the US obesity epidemic and the growing supply of cheaper food products (Hall et al. 2009). In our research, we examine certain personal aspects in case of specific (e.g. functional) foods as well. A significant decrease in food waste coming from households could be attained by controlling our attitudes. Food waste, consumption awareness, eating habits, food mileage, water footprint, sustainable eating, energy efficiency: these are all terms which have to have their meaning and importance taught to people, as they contain important – affecting the level of wasting – information. Therefore, we can see that food waste itself is one of the most serious, paradoxical and global modern issues which the developed world has identified, and is trying to decrease by using national and international interventions in order to limit food supply anomalies and environmental loads as much as possible. Understanding personal attributes more precisely might be a good practice for providing future solutions, as well. |

Title | Determinants and trends in economic efficiency of Colian S.A. compared with the total food industry in Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | poziom i struktura kosztów, efektywność ekonomiczna, rentowność, wartość dodana, pozaoperacyjne obszary rachunkowości |
Key words | cost level, costs structure, economic efficiency, profitability, net value added, non-operational accounting areas |
Abstrakt | W opracowaniu określono relacje między poziomem i zmianami struktury kosztów oraz efektywnością ekonomiczną przedsiębiorstwa na tle sektora produkcji artykułów spożywczych na podstawie studium przypadku Colian S.A. Wykorzystano zagregowane dane o poziomie cen i kosztów oraz wskaźniki rentowności operacyjnej aktywów (ROA), rentowności ekonomicznej sprzedaży (RES), rentowności netto i wartości dodanej wraz z danymi kosztów rodzajowych w układzie porównawczym. |
Abstract | The subject of the study undertaken was determination of relations between the level and structure of costs and the economic efficiency of the company of Polish food production sector, using the case study of Colian joint-stock company. The study adopted aggregated data of the prices and costs level, the profitability indicators of revenue of assets (ROA), the economic viability of sales (ROS), the net value added, and data from periodic reports on the structure of costs by comparative cost system. The level of costs in the sector and in the company increased, despite the decrease in the share of costs of materials and energy, wages and salaries, social security and other benefits, depreciation as well as taxes and fees in the cost structure. The rate of decline in the operating profitability of assets, the economic profitability of sales and the level of value added at enterprise was lower than the increase in the level of costs, which may result from non-operational activities. |

Title | Conditions for the Creation and State of Development of Cooperatives and Energy Clusters in Poland Compared with Germany |
Słowa kluczowe | spółdzielnie energetyczne, klastry energii, energia odnawialna, rozwój lokalny |
Key words | energy co-operatives, energy clusters, renewable energy, local development |
Abstract | In energy policy, various organizational forms are used. At local and regional levels, energy cooperatives and energy clusters are perfect. Their main advantages are: socialization of the production process, combining social and economic goals and a beneficial effect on the improvement of the natural environment. The aim of the article was to recognize the conditions and state of development of energy cooperatives and energy clusters in Poland and their impact on local development and the entire energy sector as compared with similar activities in Germany. Germany has the largest number of energy cooperatives that operate in the European Union. They lead to the development of civic energy in which the interests of energy producers and consumers are integrated on a large scale. The conducted analysis led to the conclusion that energy cooperatives should have flexible structures resulting from local needs and possibilities, starting from social cooperatives to structures functioning in the form of regional clusters |

Title | Changes in the market of energy from renewable sources in the UE under the conditions of the strategy of circular bioeconomy |
Słowa kluczowe | gospodarka o obiegu zamkniętym, bioenergia, odpady |
Key words | circular economy, bioenergy, waste |
Przedstawiono ogólną strukturę rynku energii, a następnie przeanalizowano znaczenie bioenergii, pozostałych OZE i energii pochodzącej z odpadów w systemie energetycznym UE. Badania wykazały, że dotychczasowa polityka UE przyniosła znaczący wzrost wykorzystania odnawialnych źródeł energii w strukturze produkcji i zużycia energii w UE. |

Abstrakt | This paper presents the changes in food supply in selected EU Member states and average EU+ after the establishment of the European Platform for Action in the field of Diet, Physical Activity and Health in 2005. The per capita annual supply of vegetables, fruits, pulses, sugar & sweeteners and the daily values of calories and fat are analysed based on FAO Food Balance Sheet (FBS) data. The supply of vegetables in the EU has decreased since 2005 while that of fruits, pulses and sugar & sweeteners, as well as energy and fat have not changed significantly. The 313 voluntary commitments of Platform members, aimed at promoting healthier food choices and life styles in the region do not seem to have had a significant impact on food supply at population level. Firmer policy measures, incl. fiscal regulations are needed to support these voluntary actions. Sustainability issues should be included in the health-oriented initiatives as food choices contribute not only to the health of individuals but also of the environment as a whole. |

Tytuł | EMPLOYMENT IMPACTS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN UE |
Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | renewable energy sources, employment, panel estimation |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | In the world renewable energy sector, including large hydropower, employed 10.3 million people, directly and indirectly, in 2017. This represents an increase of 5.3% over the number reported the previous year. The aim of the executed research is to determine the influence of harvesting renewable energy on the labour market in EU. Eurostat databases provided a source of empirical data concerning the amount of produced energy. The following sectors were considered: solid biofuels, biogas, liquid biofuels, geothermal, hydropower, municipal waste, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind power and heat pumps. The research concerned 28 Member States of the EU between 2009 and 2016. Panel estimation was used as means of empirical indication of relations between the variables. The obtained models are adjusted to the empirical data, the rectified coefficient of determination equalled, depending on the sector, 0.828 (liquid biofuels) to 0.981 (solid biofuels). The analysed models show that throughout the examined period, the solar and wind power sectors were the ones that consumed the larger amount of work. As it was indicated above, these sectors are considered the most innovative and technologically advanced ones and thus, the employment rates seem to decreased in the shorter time. |

Abstrakt | Thermal solar panel installation has been growing in Poland in response to the EU policies and available subsidies. This paper investigates the attitudes of residents of four counties in Mazowieckie Voividship in Poland about the origin of solar panels. Results show that rural residents did not attach importance to awarding preferences to domestic solar panel producers or to foreign producers in exchange of trade benefits. The recycling of used solar panels concerned a relatively small portion of respondents and seems to justify the passage of regulations obligating the solar panel industry to recycle the used panels. |
