Abstrakt | The aim of the research was a multidimensional assessment of the quality of life in farmers’ households along with its synthetic measure and a typology of household classes, rendered by the measure. The 2015 data on 730 farmers’ households were used to analyse their quality of life in nine dimensions: material living conditions, employment, health, education, leisure and social relations, economic and physical security, civic participation, environmental quality, and the subjective assessment of well-being. Due to concomitance of features measured on metric and non-metric scales, generalized distance measure (GDM) was applied as part of the TOPSIS method to determine the distance of objects from the model values. The study drew on microdata from the Social Diagnosis survey conducted in 2015 by the Council for Social Monitoring, and employed clusterSim R-package for calculations. |

Abstrakt | The purpose of this paper is to assess the use of agricultural services in European Union countries in the context of selected features of agriculture. The Ward’s Method was used to isolate six typological clusters of European Union countries. It may be noticed that clusters with a high levels of fixed capital consumption and total intermediate consumption are characterized by a higher use of services than other clusters. The absence of a noticeable relation between the share of crop output in the structure of agricultural output, or between the labour input and the use of agricultural services can be explained by differences in natural conditions, traditional farming models and preferences in choosing between developing the farm’s own machinery or using services. |

Abstrakt | Within the framework of implementation of overarching national tasks, special attention is paid to the food production and the matter of keeping up with the consumer demand for quality food, which is of national significance. The poultry industry is able to make its fairly considerable contribution into solving the problems of the consumer demand for valuable healthy food products; and to create conditions for the national food security owing to this industry economic growth based on its production potential development and strengthening. The domestic and foreign practice clearly demonstrates that it is possible to provide the population with quality food within a relatively short term, primarily due to the increase of egg and poultry meat production. The poultry industry is not only the most dynamic and fast-growing branch of the livestock farming, but also it has the most intensive production methods. The aim of this article is to determine the influence and the role of the poultry industry on providing the population with food supplies in present-day conditions in the world. |

Abstrakt | The aim of this paper was to recognize the scale and types of the food adulteration practices associated with meat and meat products from Poland. The vulnerability of food supply chains to fraud/adulteration is growing as a result of globalisation, which is expanding the scope and scale of the incidence of food fraud/adulteration. Both the intentional and unintentional adulteration of food can lead to a public health threat, and cause severe economic consequences. Meat and meat products are the most common targets for adulteration in Poland and the EU. Since meat and meat products hold a key position in food production and consumption in Poland, it is in both the industry’s and government’s interests to eliminate adulteration in the meat supply chain. The methodological approach was to first review the literature to define and outline the challenge of food adulteration, and then to build a database on the basis of IJHARS decisions regarding adulterated meat and meat products, and to analyse them in detail. An analysis of the data revealed that most cases infringed Article 7.1(a) of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers concerning fair information practices. |

Abstrakt | The aim of this paper is to present changes in the role of EU countries, the USA and BRICS countries in international trade of goods and services and selected macroeconomic determinants of trade exchange in the analysed countries in the years 1960–2015 together with the projection of potential development of the situation until 2070. Investigated macroeconomic trade conditions included population size, GDP, GDP per capita and the inflation rate. Naive forecasting methods were used to estimate selected characteristics, as well as export and import volumes, considering their development trends. The analyses showed that currently, the largest global trade centres, i.e. the EU and the USA, are losing their share in global GDP. Their share in global exports and imports is decreasing to the advantage of BRICS countries. The simulation up to 2070 showed that the trends observed in previous years may be increasing, while the position of the EU and the USA in world trade may be weakening. |

Abstrakt | The main purpose of this paper was to assess the openness of trade in food products in the context of changes in food security levels. The period covered by this study is 1995–2015. The research was based on outcomes reported by main players of the global market. The basic source of data were online databases and reports. Once collected, the data was analysed with the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Selected statistical methods, indices of structure and dynamics, indicators of economic openness and indicators related to three dimensions of security (availability, access and stability) were used. The analysis resulted in numerous conclusions. In the study period, food imports followed a global growth trend with alternating periods of contrasting developments. In the countries covered by this study, the openness of trade in food was higher than that of global imports and followed a growth trend. The singularities of the development of the agri-food sector were reflected in decreasing values of the exports-to-imports ratio, and were decisive for the positive growth rate of per capita agri-food output. According to the analysis of relationships between changes in trade levels and selected food security indicators, imports proved to be positively correlated with physical and economic availability, and negatively correlated with stability. Based on the results, a general conclusion may be drawn that economic growth resulted in structural changes which contributed to improving access to food. |

Abstrakt | Nowadays, the digital economy plays a significant role in economic life. It is determined by the intensive development of modern ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Thus, the importance of the information society using techniques of information communication and processing that arose from the connection of other households is increasing. These households participate and form the basis for the process of creating social capital. Therefore, it seems interesting to examine the socio-economic space of Polish households due to the existence of disproportions in ICT development. The article presents the results of the classification of Polish voivodeships in terms of the degree of digital exclusion understood as lack of access or the ability to use ICT in households in 2017. The research used the ELECTRE TRI method, which is an example of a multicriteria decision support method used to classify decision variants based on a relationship of exceedance. The obtained results allowed for the identification of regions that are characterized by the highest degree of exclusion of digital households (the lowest use of ICT). This group includes the following provinces: Podlasie, Lublin and Lubusz. Into the analyses carried out additionally and deliberately introduced the region of Masovia Province without the capital city and separately the region of Warsaw (the capital city), which clearly different from other units. Thus, it served as a reference point in the study, which represents highly urbanized areas of voivodeships characterized by a low degree of digital exclusion. |

Abstrakt | Issues of tourists’ safety are gaining grounds in Ghana especially in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region where Ghana discovered commercial crude oil in Cape Three Points in 2007 and started drilling in 2010. Using purposive sampling method, observation, interviews and questionnaires, this study sought to examine the extent to which tourists perceive their own safety in this destination which is old but now renewed tourist destination due to the oil find in Ghana. Welcoming and friendly atmosphere to tourists was indicative of a safe and a secured destination for tourists. The display of globalization showed in the form of ‘glocalization’ in this destination. There is a conflict between land use for agricultural purposes and tourist facilities since the predominant cash crop in this area is oil palm, hence a threat to agricultural sustainability. It is recommended that the security agents should as a matter of urgency put in place the appropriate structures in this tourist destination and farming area for safety. |

Abstrakt | The main purpose of the study is the role and influence of social factors on macroeconomic stability. The research is based on the hypothesis that countries with greater macroeconomic stability achieve greater social progress. The integrated index of human capital is proposed as a target for the construction of an appropriate system for monitoring social progress, and in the future – identifying the impact on macroeconomic stability. The main stages of estimating the integral index of human capital are: identification of relevant indicators that will form each of the sub-indices; filtering the selected indicators in the previous stage based on the analysis of the correlation matrix of each of the subindices; normalization of indicators in each of the subindices, calculation of the integral index for each of the subindices, calculation of the final integral index of human capital. The calculations of the integrated capital human capital index for some of the EU countries (Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Croatia, Romania) and Ukraine for the period 2000–2015 allowed us to conclude that Romania and Ukraine were on a marginal level of social progress, while Lithuania, Poland and Croatia in the range of moderate level. The use of the OLS (the least squares) method to determine the significance of changes in social progress to macroeconomic stability has revealed a positive and statistically significant impact of social progress on macroeconomic stability. |

Abstrakt | This research is try to identify the operational risks in Network Operation Center division of PT. IO; measure and evaluate the risks, as well as make control and response measures to operational risks. The research method was a survey and Focus Group Discussion, by using a questionnaire as a research tool. The sample selection is done by Quota sampling and Convenience sampling methods to the employees in Division Network Operating Center PT.IO, which has had experience of at least 5 years. The results showed that as many as 40 out of 49 identified risks have been handled properly. Against these risks, the company have 35 standard operating procedure documents (SOPs) as a mitigation of those risks. Nonetheless, efforts are needed to improve and update mitigation strategies because of the possibility of new risks and increased risk levels. It becomes a suggestion for further research as well as suggestion to undertake further research on mitigation at the division and director level. |

Abstrakt | W artykule przedstawiono wpływ użytkowania ziemi na stabilność ekologiczną obszarów wiejskich województwa świętokrzyskiego. Na podstawie zestawień danych dotyczących 24 form użytkowania ziemi, dostępnych w Banku Danych Lokalnych GUS, obliczono wskaźnik stabilności ekologicznej powierzchni ziemi. W obrębie terenów rolniczych i nierolniczych wyróżniono cechy korzystne i niekorzystne z ekologicznego punktu widzenia. Klasyfikację typologiczną gmin wykonano z zastosowaniem metody hierarchicznej analizy skupień. Wyniki badań wskazują, że obszary wiejskie województwa świętokrzyskiego w obrazie ogólnym charakteryzują się stosunkowo małym wskaźnikiem stabilności ekologicznej, a jednocześnie bardzo dużym zróżnicowaniem przestrzennym. Przeprowadzona wskaźnikowa ocena stabilności ekologicznej terenów wiejskich gmin może być jednym z elementów uwzględnianych przy sporządzaniu różnych dokumentów planistycznych, w tym związanych z gospodarowaniem według zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju. |
Abstract | The paper presents the impact of land use on the ecological stability of rural areas in the Świętokrzyskie province. The work is based on the data published by the Local Data Bank regarding 24 types of land use. According to the methodology used for calculating the ecological stability indicator, these types were divided into two groups: agricultural (with positive and negative characteristics) and non-agricultural. Typological classification of communes was done with the use of Hierarchical Cluster Analysis. Research results show that rural areas of the Świętokrzyskie province have generally low ecological stability indicator, but they are characterised by high spatial diversity. The assessment of rural communes based on the ecological stability indicator may thus be one of the elements taken into consideration while drafting various planning documents, including those related to the management built on the sustainable development principles. |

Abstrakt | Celem pracy była ocena warunków środowiskowo-ekonomicznych uprawy jabłek w Polsce, w tym warunków glebowo-klimatycznych, poziomu produkcji i jej opłacalności oraz struktury zagospodarowania na podstawie materiałów źródłowych za pomocą metody opisowej i porównawczej. Polska ze względu na swoje dobre warunki glebowo-klimatyczne jest największym producentem jabłek w Unii Europejskiej i jednym z większych w skali świata. W strukturze zagospodarowania tych owoców dominuje przetwórstwo (produkcja soku zagęszczonego), następnie export i bezpośrednie spożycie. Zwiększenie wartości współczynnika opłacalności produkcji jabłek wymaga stałej optymalizacji warunków uprawy, wprowadzenia koncepcji logistyki do sprawnego zarządzania zaopatrzeniem, produkcją i dystrybucją oraz poszukiwania nowych rynków zbytu i efektywnych sposobów zagospodarowania nadpodaży owoców. |
Abstract | The aim of this paper was to assess the environmental and economic conditions of apple cultivation in Poland, including soil and climate conditions, production level and its profitability, the structure of management based on source materials using a descriptive and comparative method. Due to good soil and climatic conditions, Poland is the largest producer of apples in the EU and one of the largest in the world. In the utilization structure of these fruits is dominated by food processing (especially production of concentrated juice), followed by export and direct consumption. Increasing the values of profitability production index, requires optimization of cultivation conditions, introduction of the logistics concept for efficient management of supply, production and distribution as well as searching for new markets and effective ways of managing the oversupply of fruit. |

Abstrakt | European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was set up by the European Union that operates independently of the European legislative and executive institutions (Commission, Council, Parliament) and EU Member States. It was established in 2002 to be a source of scientific advice and communication on risks associated with the food chain. European Food Safety Authority is responsible for risk assessment, and also has a duty to communicate its scientific findings to the public. It produces scientific opinions and advice that constitute the basis for European policies and legislation. It also play an important role in collecting and analysing data to ensure that European risk assessment is supported by the most comprehensive scientific information available. Thus, it is the treasure trove for present and future public health specialists and nutritionists. Since 29 February 2008 when the Polish EFSA Focal Point was established at the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate EFSA’s word has become potentially more reachable for Polish consumers and entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of university students of public health, dietetics and other disciplines related to human nutrition on EFSA’s objective and scope of its operation as well as to assess EFSA as a potential source of information for them. The study was carried out using the CAWI method from June to November 2017 among 201 students of public health (68 students) and faculties related to human nutrition (133 students). Among them, 85% of public health students did not work and 82% of students of faculties related to human nutrition neither did. The most of public health students were in their fourth year and among students of faculties related to human nutrition a group in third year the accounted for the greatest part. Results were analysed using configure frequency analysis (CFA) and χ2 test. Results indicate that 41% of public health student and 11% of students of human nutrition related faculties did not know EFSA at the moment of participation in the study. In both groups of public health students and students of human nutrition related faculties, more participants were not encouraged by the university to use information published by EFSA (respectively 87 and 63%). Only 4% of public health students and 38% of students of faculties related to human nutrition did use at least once information published by EFSA. The most often indicated cause of not using EFSA’s resources was lack of awareness of possibility to explore it (62%). In general, more students of faculties related to human nutrition did know EFSA’s activities, were encouraged to use its information and were interested in Polish fanpage of EFSA than public health students. The knowledge of students about EFSA and the possibility of using its resources is insuffi cient. It is reasonable to include EFSA-related topics in the study program of public health faculty and human nutrition-related faculties in order to better familiarize students with EFSA resources and show them what tools and opportunities they offer in their academic and professional life. |
Abstract | Europejski Urząd ds. Bezpieczeństwa Żywności (EFSA) został stworzony przez Unię Europejską. Jego działalność jest niezależna od europejskich instytucji prawodawczych i wykonawczych (Komisji, Rady, Parlamentu) i państw członkowskich UE. Urząd został założony w 2002 r., aby stanowić źródło doradztwa naukowego i komunikacji w zakresie ryzyka związanego z łańcuchem żywnościowym. Europejski Urząd ds. Bezpieczeństwa Żywności jest odpowiedzialny za ocenę ryzyka, a także ma obowiązek przekazywania swoich wyników badań naukowych do informacji publicznej. Wydaje opinie i porady naukowe, które stanowią podstawę europejskich polityk i prawodawstwa. Odgrywa również ważną rolę w gromadzeniu i analizowaniu danych, aby zapewnić, że europejska ocena ryzyka jest wspierana przez najbardziej wszechstronne, dostępne informacje naukowe. W związku z powyższym EFSA stanowi bogate źródło informacji dla obecnych i przyszłych specjalistów zdrowia publicznego oraz żywieniowców. Od 29 stycznia 2008 r., gdy został ustanowiony polski punkt koordynacyjny EFSA z siedzibą Warszawie, przekaz EFSA stał się potencjalnie bardziej osiągalny dla polskich konsumentów i przedsiębiorców. Celem badania była analiza wiedzy studentów (kierunków: zdrowie publiczne, dietetyka, żywienie człowieka i pokrewnych związanych z żywieniem człowieka) na temat celu i zakresu działalności EFSA oraz jego oceny jako potencjalnego źródła informacji. Badanie przeprowadzono z użyciem metody CAWI w okresie od czerwca do listopada 2017 r. w grupie studentów zdrowia publicznego (67 osób) i kierunków związanych z żywieniem (137 osób). W okresie badania 85% studentów zdrowia publicznego i 82% studentów kierunków związanych z żywieniem nie pracowało. Większość studentów zdrowia publicznego była na czwartym roku studiów. Nieco młodsi byli studenci kierunków związanych z żywieniem, wśród których przeważały osoby z trzeciego roku studiów. Wyniki badania przeanalizowane na podstawie konfi guracyjnej analizy częstotliwości wskazują, że 41% studentów zdrowia publicznego i 11% studentów kierunków związanych z żywieniem człowieka nie znało pojęcia EFSA. Niezależnie od kierunku większość studentów twierdziła, że nie była zachęcana przez swoją uczelnię do korzystania z zasobów informacyjnych EFSA. Tylko 4% studentów zdrowia publicznego i 38% studentów kierunków związanych z żywieniem człowieka przynajmniej raz korzystało z informacji publikowanych przez EFSA. Głównymi przyczynami niekorzystania z zasobów EFSA, zidentyfikowanymi wśród badanych respondentów, były brak wiedzy o urzędzie oraz niemożność korzystania z jego zasobów (według 62% badanych). Większą wiedzę o EFSA deklarowali studenci kierunków związanych z żywieniem człowieka. Częściej znali zakres działalności EFSA, byli zachęcani do korzystania z jego opracowań, wyrażali zainteresowanie śledzeniem polskiego fanpage urzędu. Wiedza studentów na temat EFSA oraz możliwości wykorzystania jego zasobów jest niewystarczająca. Zasadne jest włączenie do program nauczania na kierunku zdrowie publiczne i kierunkach pokrewnych z żywieniem człowieka zagadnień związanych z EFSA, aby lepiej zapoznać studentów z zasobami tego urzędu i wskazać im narzędzia i możliwości oferowane im w życiu akademickim i zawodowym. |

Abstrakt | Climate change adds extra stress on the current global situations and the regional development plans. Despite, Africa being rated the least among the continents contributing to the atmospheric pollution, it continues to be responsible for the least global emissions (estimated at 4%). Although they contributed to anthropogenic emission slightly, African continent is one of the highly vulnerable to impacts of long-term climate variability and extreme weather events, especially on the Nile. Moreover, developing countries are the most vulnerable to climate change impacts because they have fewer resources to adapt: socially, technologically and financially. Therefore, this paper is seeking to find and modify the regional development process in the frame of climate change along the Nile river. By considering some examples to accelerate the development process and methods in the Nile’s valley regions. Strongly related to the climate change impacts on different sectors and activities such agriculture, industry, energy, and the water supply and demand as well. |

Abstrakt | Celem opracowania było określenie pozycji polskiego rolnictwa ekologicznego natle rolnictwa ekologicznego w Unii Europejskiej (UE), regionalnego rozmieszczenia producentówekologicznych w Polsce, a także rozpoznanie zakresu wsparcia finansowego w ramach ProgramuRozwoju Obszarów Wiejskich w latach 2014–2020. W artykule wykorzystano dane wtórne i zastosowanometodę analizy porównawczej. Pod względem liczby gospodarstw ekologicznych Polskaw 2015 r. zajęła szóstą pozycję w UE. Z analizy wynika, że najwięcej wniosków o dofinansowanieprodukcji ekologicznej w ramach działania „Rolnictwo ekologiczne” zostało zrealizowanychw województwach z największą liczbą gospodarstw ekologicznych w Polsce, a więc zachodniopomorskim,warmińsko-mazurskim i podlaskim. |
Abstract | The aim of the study was determination of the position of Polish organic farming comparingto organic farming in European Union, defining the regional locations of organic farming producersin Poland and identification of the financial support under the Rural Development Programme for2014–2020. In the article the secondary data and the method of comparative analysis were used.Concerning the number of ecological farms, Poland had the sixth position in the European Union in2015. The analysis shows that the largest number of applications for co-financing of organic productionwithin framework for action „Organic farming” were implemented in the voivodeships with thelargest number of organic farms in Poland: Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship, Warmińsko-mazurskievoivodeship and Podlaskie voivodeship. |

Abstrakt | Celem badań było porównanie potencjału rolnictwa w województwach oraz ocena jego zmian w latach 2006 i 2014. Podstawą oceny były rankingi opracowane z wykorzystaniem wybranych metod porządkowania liniowego sporządzone ze względu na skuteczność i możliwości prowadzenia produkcji rolniczej, a nie na jej wielkość. Wykorzystując miarę podobieństwa rankingów wybrano dla obydwu lat najlepsze rankingi. Zmienne syntetyczne, na podstawie których je utworzono, wykorzystano następnie do wyodrębnienia klas typologicznych. Zaproponowano podział na pięć grup bazujący na średniej i odchyleniu standardowym. |
Abstract | The aim of the research presented in the article was to compare the potential of agriculture in voivodships and to evaluate the changes in the potential in the period from 2006 to 2014. The evaluation was based on rankings prepared with the use of selected methods of linear ordering developed according to the effectiveness and potential of agricultural production, not its size. With the use of rankings similarity measure the best rankings were selected for both years. Synthetic variables they were based on were then used to distinguish typological classes. A division into five groups based on mean and standard deviation was proposed. |

Abstrakt | The increasing number of unfavorable conditions of agricultural production causes the farmers to suffer severe losses in their activity. At the same time, the increase in the profitability of agricultural production, the support of numerous European Union funds, led to increased interest in insurance as an instrument supporting agricultural risk management. Hence, both the agricultural industry and the insurance industry see the need to create an effective agricultural and livestock insurance system. The paper examines the changes and scope of crop insurance in Poland towards the European Countries. There were presented issues connecting to policies, regulation and state aid rules, crop insurance level in EU countries and characteristic of the crop insurance market – case study Poland. There was used descriptive and comparative methods, as well as the selected statistical method. The analysis was performed in the years 2005-2016. |
