Key words | agro-sector, European Union, correlation and regression, financial efficiency, food product, financial economy, productivity & profitability, resource efficiency |
Abstrakt | Economic literature pays a great deal of attention to economic and financial efficiency, expressed in terms of competition, concentration, productivity and profitability. This paper provides an all-embracing framework for the various existing theories in this area and illustrates these theories with practical applications. Currently, changing the size of the production potential in agricultural units in the Republic of Moldova depends to a great extent on the influence of different trends in the modification of production resources: the reduction of labor resources and agricultural land, quantitative and qualitative changes in fixed assets, and in current assets, etc.The notion of resource potential means the totality of the volume of all resources (natural, labor, material, intellectual, information, etc.) on specific enterprises, territories, branches, regions. Evaluating a broad field of research, the paper describes profit maximizing food products and demonstrates how several widely-used products can be fit into this framework. The authors also present an overview of the current major trends in the food sector and relate them to the assumptions for food products, thereby displaying their relevance and timeliness. The results include a set of recommendations for future research on this topic. The design, methodology and approach of this research is to explain why efficiency can help obtain a profit surplus, and to measure this efficiency. For quality of methodology we apply a range of statistical methods, as well as the strategic capability of organisations – made up of resources and competences. One way to approach the stategic capability of an organisation is to consider its strengths and weaknesses (for example, where it has a competitive advantage, profit, efficiency or disadvantage). Based on our research and results, we sought to understand the concepts of financial effciency and to apply these concepts to practical situations. At the start of each analysis entrepreneurship plays an important role. Most organisations have to innovate constantly to obtain profit and efficiency for food products. They need to be first into a market, or simply a follower of customers in developing new products and services. Original studies in Moldova and Poland regarding farm concentration in terms of Gini Coefficient, Gini Index and Concentration Index of the utilized agricultural area. Original calculus formula to determine the Concentration Index of the UAA for the top 10% largest farms in Moldova and UK. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | Rural territory is an important part of the community’s living space, moreover, it is a living space for sustainable and smart development. With the growing public demand for a healthy living environment and healthy food, the role of rural territory as a living space for community and the necessity to maintain its sustainable development is increasing. However, the sustainability of rural territories as a living space will be preserved only when residents are ready for changes and if national institutions and local governments are promoting trends politically and practically. The aim of the research: to examine economic activity in the rural areas of Latvia with regard to promoting the sustainable and smart development direction during 2009–2016 and to assess the results achieved. An analysis of the information on entrepreneurship expansion used in the research allows making a number of conclusions. Even though Latvia has the lowest competitiveness rating among Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, at the same time, it is characterized by the highest growth rates and small distances among these countries. The reduction of these differences was significantly influenced by economic activity expansion, including the knowledge economy segment in Latvia. The growth of the economy in the rural territories surpasses the growth rates in major cities. The rural space has confirmed its suitability for the innovative functioning and growth of the economy. |

Abstrakt | It is determined that in economic science there is no single approach to the interpretation of the concept of ‘innovation’. It is suggested that taking into account the radical changes that are in the world economy today it is necessary to use the extended concept of innovation, which should be understood as the results of the development transformation, research, ideas and their combination into a radically new or improved technological, economic, social solution, the results of which can be applied in practice. The main indicators that determine the level of innovation development of a country or region and provide an opportunity to determine the impact on economic development are covered. The place of Ukraine in such ratings according to indicators of innovative development in 2017, 2018 and problems that cause their low level are defined. The improvement directions of the innovative development level of the country are defined and the real steps taken by the government of the country to correct the negative trends through the introduction of digital transformation of the country’s economy, the transition from raw material to high-tech production and the basis of innovative IT technologies and communications are shown. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | This paper analyses the scope and the main directions of economic and social changes occurring in rural areas including, among others, the declining role of agriculture and the growth of non-agricultural activity. Although employment in agriculture is decreasing, the population of people in rural areas is on the rise, while the general population continues to decline. In general, these phenomena have been caused by nationwide deurbanisation and re ruralisation (the influx of residents to rural areas). The cumulative effect of these changes is the transformation of rural areas, especially those which are suburban or attractive due to their natural environment, which are losing their agrarian character. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The foreign trade in agricultural and food products is a significant reflection of an economic situation occurring in the current functioning of agriculture, food industry and its individual trades in a given country. It is worth considering how the export of Polish agricultural and food products may be compared with the Vise grad Group countries in this area. The article deals with an attempt to assess the export potential of agricultural and food products in the Visegrad Group countries in the years 2005–2017 using a modified index for an assessment of a level of competitiveness in a foreign trade, that is the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index – RCA – by Balassa. The results of the study prove that the export of agricultural and food products in the Visegrad Group countries is vulnerable to economic trends, there is a significant degree of competitiveness regarding export of the food products of animal origin in these countries, and the greatest level of competitiveness of the foreign trade in the food products of plant origin regarding cereals, and the trade in fruit and vegetables is less and less important. |

Abstrakt | The aim of this paper is to present changes in the role of EU countries, the USA and BRICS countries in international trade of goods and services and selected macroeconomic determinants of trade exchange in the analysed countries in the years 1960–2015 together with the projection of potential development of the situation until 2070. Investigated macroeconomic trade conditions included population size, GDP, GDP per capita and the inflation rate. Naive forecasting methods were used to estimate selected characteristics, as well as export and import volumes, considering their development trends. The analyses showed that currently, the largest global trade centres, i.e. the EU and the USA, are losing their share in global GDP. Their share in global exports and imports is decreasing to the advantage of BRICS countries. The simulation up to 2070 showed that the trends observed in previous years may be increasing, while the position of the EU and the USA in world trade may be weakening. |

Key words | agricultural services, mechanization services, demand, European Union |
Abstract | The use of mechanization services can significantly contribute to reducing production costs, enabling agricultural producers to implement technical progress without any investment. The article attempted to identify trends in demand for agricultural mechanization services in the European Union countries in 2010-2017. Changes in the value of services per 1 ha of UAA and changes in the share of mechanization services in total expenditures incurred for agricultural production were examined. It was found that the value of services per 1 ha of UAA on average in the EU increased. The share of services in intermediate consumption has also increased. As a result of grouping objects by the Ward method, 5 clusters of countries were distinguished, which differed among each other in terms of the proposed features, while the countries that created the focus were characterized by similar values of variables. The countries in which both a clear increase in the value of mechanization services per unit area was observed as well as a significant increase in the value of services in indirect consumption were: Finland, Germany, Latvia, Romania and Estonia. A clear decline in demand for mechanization services occurred in Greece and Lithuania. |

Key words | organizational-production changes, agricultural production, environmental impact |
Abstrakt | W pracy dokonano oceny zmian organizacyjnych i produkcyjności w polskim rolnictwie w kontekście wybranych oddziaływań środowiskowych, tj. salda bilansu azotu brutto. Dla wskazania zachodzących tendencji porównywano zmiany pomiędzy okresem lat 2002-2004 a latami 2014-2016. Badania wykazały, że mimo różnokierunkowych zmian m.in. powierzchni poszczególnych roślin uprawnych i pogłowia gatunków zwierząt inwentarskich, kształtowanych głównie przez uwarunkowania ekonomiczne, presja środowiskowa ze strony prowadzonej produkcji rolniczej w Polsce uległa zmniejszeniu. Nastąpiło to, w procesie intensyfikowania produkcji rolniczej przeciętnie w skali kraju. Zjawisko to świadczy o poprawie efektywności gospodarowania azotem w Polsce. |
Abstract | The paper presents the assessment of organizational and productivity changes in Polish agriculture in the context of selected environmental impacts, i.e. the gross nitrogen balance. To indicate trends, changes between research from 2002-2004 and 2014-2016 were compared. Studies have shown that despite multi-directional changes in the area of particular crop plants and livestock husbandry animals, which have been shaped mainly by economic conditions, environmental pressure from agricultural production has decreased. This occurred despite the process of intensifying average agricultural production on a national scale. This phenomenon shows the improvement of nitrogen efficiency in Poland. |

Key words | butter, cheese, production, domestic consumption, market surpluses |
Względnie zrównoważona produkcja i spożycie występowały w Indiach, Pakistanie, USA i Brazylii. |

Title | Directions of Adaptation of Commercial Enterprises to Consumer Purchasing Patterns |
Słowa kluczowe | handel detaliczny, zmiany strukturalne w handlu, wzorce zakupowe konsumentów |
Key words | retail trade, trade structural changes, consumer purchasing patterns |
Wynika to z faktu rosnącej pozycji korporacji transnarodowych w Polsce. Celem przewodnim artykułu jest przedstawienie skali i zakresu zmian w handlu detalicznym w Polsce i określenie kierunku dostosowań przedsiębiorstw handlowych do wzorców zakupowych konsumentów. Punktem wyjścia rozważań jest przedstawienie procesów koncentracji sektora w latach 2012-2016. Następnie poddano analizie kierunki zmian w handlu detalicznym w okresie transformacji gospodarki polskiej. W kolejnej części opracowania przedstawiono dostosowania przedsiębiorstw handlowych do wzorców zakupowych polskich konsumentów. |
Abstract | During the transformation of the Polish economy, the huge changes took place in the distribution system. In 1990 the integrator in the food chain was the food industry. In the second decade of the 21st century, the same function is fulfilled by retail trade. This situation is due to the growing position of transnational corporations in Poland. The main goal of the article is to present the scale and scope of changes in retail trade in Poland and to determine the direction of adaptation of commercial enterprises to consumer purchasing patterns. The starting point of consideration is to present the processes of sector concentrations in 2012-2016. Then, the trends of retail trade during the transformation of the Polish economy were analysed. The next part of the study presents adaptations of trade enterprises to the purchasing patterns of Polish consumers. |

Title | Management and Certification Process for Organic Production in Ukraine and Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | organic production, agricultural production, quality, agriculture, control, certification, financial support |
Key words | organic production, agricultural production, quality, agriculture, control, certification, financial support |
Abstrakt | A systematic analysis of trends in the development of organic products in Ukraine and Poland was carried out, which showed that the total area of certified ecological lands for the study period from 2006-2016 in Ukraine increased by 1.7 times, and in Poland from 2004-2014 it increased by 12 times. It has been established that the most significant impact on qualitative structural changes in the economic sector is adjustment to European standards that establish a favorable system of agricultural production regulation, marking and inspection of organic products. This is why Poland, while being in the European Union, has a significant advantage over Ukraine. The system of control and certification by the authorized bodies is generalized, as well as the mechanism of financial support for organic agricultural production. The necessity of using the experience of Poland with the purpose of greening agriculture and development of organic agricultural production in Ukraine is emphasized. |

Słowa kluczowe | kukurydza, przestrzenna integracja rynku, Ukraina |
Key words | maize, spatial integration of the market, Ukraine |
Abstrakt | Kukurydza należy do najważniejszych zbóż paszowych i przemysłowych w świecie a jednym z kluczowych producentów i eksporterów kukurydzy w świecie staje się Ukraina. |
Abstract | Maize belongs to the most important crops and industrial grains in the world and Ukraine is becoming one of the key producers and exporters of maize in the world. The aim of the study was to assess the determinants of maize production changes in Ukraine in the context of internal and global conditions. The work presents changes in production, consumption and prices in Ukraine against their counterparts in the world. In light of the research, it has been shown that there is an increase of integration of the Ukrainian maize market with global markets. This phenomenon was supported by the increase in demand for maize on global markets caused by the development of biofuel production and the relatively low costs of cereal production in Ukraine. |

Title | Global and Domestic Food Prices During 2016-2017 |
Słowa kluczowe | żywność, szoki podażowe, niestabilność cen, rynek globalny, Unia Europejska |
Key words | food, supply shocks, unstable prices, global market, European Union |
Abstract | The opening of the Polish market as a result of systemic transformation and European integration increased its dependence on changes in global factors. During the last decade global prices and food supplies experienced serious shocks, which had significant consequences for the Polish food market. The objective of this paper is to present changes in food prices in Poland during 2016-17 against a backdrop of global trends, with particular emphasis on the EU market, a description of the strength of their mutual relationship and an indication of the factors affecting these processes. As a result of the analyses, it was concluded that during the studied period prices in Poland increased faster that in the EU, but more slowly than global prices. They showed a smaller tendency to oscillate than in external markets and a very high correlation with changes in EU prices. The connection with the EU market was particularly apparent in the case of prices of dairy products, cereal crops, pork, vegetable oils and sugar. |
