Title | Supply of Materials to the Agribusiness Sector of European Union Countries |
Słowa kluczowe | material supply, agribusiness, food industry, agriculture, European Union |
Key words | material supply, agribusiness, food industry, agriculture, European Union |
Abstrakt | The purpose of this paper was to assess the prevailing relationships in the supply structure of the agribusiness sector in European Union countries over the years. The study focused on 25 European Union countries (Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta were excluded) to address the changes in the supply structures of agriculture and food industries, the two major components of agribusiness. The study was of a dynamic nature. Although the study period was 2000–2014, this paper only presents the figures for the first and the last year, i.e. 2000 and 2014. The main focus was on drawing conclusions on the trends observed which proved to be relatively stable in the years covered. The input–output analysis was used by aggregating the sectors of the economy for a better transparency of the inference process. As shown by this study, EU countries at higher development levels witness a decline in the share of the chemical industry in the mix of goods and services supplied to agriculture. Conversely, less developed countries saw that ratio increase. Also, the share of goods supplied to agriculture from the fuel and energy sectors goes up in most EU countries. As regards the food industry, this study observed high shares of agriculture, services and self-supply in the supply structure of EU countries. This analysis extends the existing knowledge on the relationships in the structure of materials supplied to the agribusiness because in addition to agriculture itself (which was addressed by similar studies found in literature) it takes account of the food industry. Moreover, based on long-term observations, it endeavors to capture the prevailing relationships in several countries at a time. |

Bajan B., Mrówczyńska-Kamińska A. MEASURING THE AGRIBUSINESS GDP IN EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES
Autor | Bartłomiej Bajan, Aldona Mrówczyńska-Kamińska |
Tytuł | MEASURING THE AGRIBUSINESS GDP IN EUROPEAN UNION COUNTRIES |
Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | agribusiness, GDP, European Union |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | The purpose of this paper was to measure the Gross Domestic Product of the agribusiness in European Union countries and to determine its contribution to national economies. The agribusiness GDP was measured using a proprietary method based on input–output tables. The study covered all 28 European Union countries and relied on 2014 data, the most recent available information in the World Input–Output Database (used as data source). The study found the prevalence of two relationships; (i): the higher the development level of a country, the lower the share of agribusiness GDP in the national economy; (ii): as the country develops, the share of the 2nd agribusiness aggregate in the GDP becomes relatively smaller compared to that of other agribusiness aggregates. A known problem faced in these analyses is that the I/O tables are published with a huge delay and are only available for some countries. Therefore, the studies on agribusiness measurement for all European Union countries in one period are relatively scarce in the relevant literature. Also, a proprietary method of agribusiness GDP measurement was used which takes account of the particular role of the food industry. |

Bajan B., Mrówczynska-Kamińska A. GLOBAL DIFFERENCES IN LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY IN THE AGRIBUSINESS

Tytuł | GLOBAL DIFFERENCES IN LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY IN THE AGRIBUSINESS |

Słowa kluczowe | agribusiness, labour productivity, economic growth |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | The purpose of this paper is to assess the global differences in labour productivity in the agribusiness. The relationship between a country’s economic development level (measured as GDP per capita) and labour productivity in the agriculture and across the entire agribusiness was measured in 39 countries around the world (which are entered to the World Input-Output Database and for which the relevant I/O tables were prepared) in 2000 and 2014. The input-output analysis, employed as the main research method, enabled the calculation of value added in the agriculture and elsewhere in the agribusiness. The results suggest the existence of a positive linear association between agribusiness labour productivity and economic development level, as corroborated by previous observations. In turn, two separate groups are noticeable in the relationship between agricultural labour productivity and the level of development of a country. In the first group of countries, agricultural labour productivity grows fast as the economy grows whereas in the second group, the growth rate of labour productivity clearly decreases as the economy grows. This study is a part of the discussion on the global agricultural development model which, on the one hand, calls for increasing the productivity of agricultural labour and, on the other, shows a need to reduce environmental degradation. |

Title | Input-Output Analysis in the Chinese Agri-Food Sector |
Słowa kluczowe | przepływy międzygałęziowe, agrobiznes, Chiny, przemysł spożywczy, rolnictwo |
Key words | inter-branch flows, agribusiness, China, food industry, agriculture |
Abstrakt | Celem artykułu było ocena przepływów międzygałęziowych w agrobiznesie w Chinach w latach 2000-2014. Przebadano wielkość i strukturę oraz udział wyników produkcyjnych i dochodowych agrobiznesu w tworzeniu gospodarki chińskiej, określono kierunki przepływów międzygałęziowych oraz strukturę zaopatrzenia materiałowego w agrobiznesie Państwa Środka. Obliczenia zostały wykonane na podstawie tabel przepływów międzygałęziowych stworzonych w ramach projektu World Input-Output Database (WIOD). |
Abstract | The aim of the article was to assess input-output in agribusiness in China in the 2000-2014 period. Examined the size and structure and the share of gross value added and global production output agribusiness in the creation of the Chinese economy, the directions for input-output structure and material supply in the Middle Kingdom agribusiness. The calculations were made on the basis of analysis of input-output tables which were created as part of the World Input-Output Database project. The analysis shows that in the years 2000-2014, the value of output of the entire agri-food sector in China increased more than 7.5 times, primarily due to the growth in the food industry. The main source of material flows to agriculture is the supply sphere, in turn to the food industry agriculture itself. The study also showed that Chinese agribusiness is characterized, inter alia, by low level of imported input. |

Title | DIRECT PAYMENTS FOR AGRICULTURE IN POLAND IN CONDITIONS OF STAYING OUTSIDE THE EURO AREA |
Słowa kluczowe | strefa euro, płatności bezpośrednie, dochody rolnicze |
Key words | euro area, direct payments, agricultural income |
Abstract | The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the effects that, for Polish farmers, entails staying out of the monetary union in relation to the conversion system of direct payments for countries that are not members of the euro zone. The analysis focuses on yearly differences between the reference values of exchange rate of the European Central Bank (ECB), which are the base for direct payments conversion and daily exchange rates in which the funds are paid to farmers. The analysis covers the payment campaigns 2005-2013. In the analysed period, farmers lost on the conversion of payments about 750 million zlotys, which does not exceed 1% of the received aid. The worrying fact however, may be short-term fluctuations of exchange rate, which in 2008 resulted in a loss of 25% (more than 2 billion zlotys) in relation to what beneficiaries would receive in case of participation in the euro zone. |
