Słowa kluczowe | pulses, global market, production, consumption |
Key words | pulses, global market, production, consumption |
Abstrakt | The prevalence of diet-related diseases together with global population growth and the imbalance of ecosystems determine an urgent need to change existing dietary patterns and make food market more sustainable. A widely available alternative to food of animal origin are plant sources of protein, including pulses. The aim of this paper was to analyse the global pulses market and to review programs encouraging the increase of pulses consumption. The production and consumption of this food were analysed globally, regionally, and in selected countries using FAOSTAT data. The situation on the Polish market was presented additionally on the base of GUS (Central Statistical Office) data. Finally, the SWOT method was used to assess the market and indicate the possibility of giving up part of the meat consumption for pulses |

Słowa kluczowe | food supply, European Union, changes, Platform, sustainable diets |
Key words | food supply, European Union, changes, Platform, sustainable diets |
Abstrakt | This paper presents the changes in food supply in selected EU Member states and average EU+ after the establishment of the European Platform for Action in the field of Diet, Physical Activity and Health in 2005. The per capita annual supply of vegetables, fruits, pulses, sugar & sweeteners and the daily values of calories and fat are analysed based on FAO Food Balance Sheet (FBS) data. The supply of vegetables in the EU has decreased since 2005 while that of fruits, pulses and sugar & sweeteners, as well as energy and fat have not changed significantly. The 313 voluntary commitments of Platform members, aimed at promoting healthier food choices and life styles in the region do not seem to have had a significant impact on food supply at population level. Firmer policy measures, incl. fiscal regulations are needed to support these voluntary actions. Sustainability issues should be included in the health-oriented initiatives as food choices contribute not only to the health of individuals but also of the environment as a whole. |

Title | Women’s attitudes towards food quality labelling with symbols of certification and buying behaviors concerning food with such labels |
Słowa kluczowe | certyfikacja żywności, zrównoważona konsumpcja, zachowania konsumentów, kobiety, dochód |
Key words | food certification, sustainable consumption, consumer behavior, women, income |
Abstrakt | Jednym z zadań dobrowolnych systemów certyfikowania jakości produktów żywnościowych (tzw. QAS – ang. Quality Assurance Systems) jest m.in. ułatwienie konsumentom podejmowanie odpowiedzialnych decyzji nabywczych. |
Abstract | One of the roles of voluntary food quality certification schemes (FQAS) is to help consumers make responsible buying decisions. The aim of this article is to present the level of knowledge about chosen food certificate symbols which focus on ecological, economic and social values. In order to meet the goal, primary data collected in 2014 using the CATI method among 288 women living in Warsaw was used. Obtained data shows that the group was characterized by low level of awareness as well as unwillingness to shift towards food products labeled with certification logos. It was concluded that there is a strong need to strengthen the consciousness and trust of female consumers living in Warsaw in certification schemes and the impact of current food consumption on health and natural environment. |

Słowa kluczowe | brak |
Key words | Common Agricultural Policy, consumption, school, children |
Abstrakt | brak |
Abstract | The Common Agriculture Policy’s Fruit Scheme and School Milk Program are EU-wide institutional attempts to encourage consumption of selected food products among children by increasing their availability in schools. The number of pupils participating in both schemes in Poland has reached more than 67% and 38% of the appropriate target groups. Pilot studies, carried out in 2010 and 2011, indicate what products are most preferred by Polish schoolchildren from among those made available to them through the schemes. Circa 86% of the surveyed children living in cities would like to obtain more milk products in schools, especially yogurts. In order to make both CAP schemes more nutrition-oriented the education component should be strengthened since the availability and the price are important, but not exclusive determinants of food choice |

Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | human and social capital, development of agriculture and rural areas, health |
Abstrakt | |
Abstract | Authors define and explain the meaning of two concepts, namely human and social capital and their influence on the socio-economic progress in agriculture and rural areas. The presented studies and analyses point to the link between the growing role of these two factors and the general socio-economic progress. A major part of the paper is devoted to analysing the past and current state of human and social capital in Poland, focusing on their deficiencies and the need to improve their quality. In conclusion the authors note that the significant inflow of financial means after the the Polisj accession to the EU as well as structural and administrative changes will not bring in full the possible benefits in the future unless there is an improvement in quality and an increase of creative participation of the human and social capital. The health aspect is also explored in the paper as a crucial element influencing human capital in the Polish rural areas. |

Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | fruit and vegetable market, consumption, promotion, 5 a day |
Abstrakt | |
Abstract | Promoting fruit and vegetable consumption is one of the main objectives of food and nutrition policy interventions worldwide. Public institutions, non-governmental organizations, research and health agencies together with market stakeholders undertake integrated initiatives to inform consumers about the health benefits of everyday fruit and vegetable intake. In the European Union several campaigns aimed at increasing produce demand have been launched in the nineties to improve the dietary patterns of the general population or specific consumer groups, such as children. However statistics show that fruit and vegetable intake in most EU states including new members is much below the recommended level. School-aged children, women and employees are currently the main target groups of “5 a day’ information and promotion activities aimed at increasing f&v consumption. In order to secure long-term effectiveness of such programs the main determinants of consumer choice in the food market should be monitored. Broad public-private partnerships, including producers and distributors seem to be the key to strengthening the efforts at “pushing’ market demand. Some of the campaigns developed and implemented in the European Union countries can be described as “5 a day’ best practices. The involvement of fruit and vegetable chain participants, cooperation and evaluation of undertaken interventions are further needed in order for the programs to become more efficient and widespread. |
