Title | Assessment of Food Security in the East Kazakhstan Region |
Słowa kluczowe | sustainability, agriculture, agri-food policy, food security |
Key words | sustainability, agriculture, agri-food policy, food security |
Abstrakt | The article assesses the food security of one region of Kazakhstan - the East Kazakhstan region. In the analyses, criteria such as the level of the region’s food independence, the degree of satisfaction of the population’s physiological needs in basic food, and the level of economic availability of food were applied. The research has shown that the food security in the East Kazakhstan region was at an acceptable level. However, some threats to food security were identified, including: a high level of income differentiation among the households of the East Kazakhstan region, an increase in the price index for food products, and a significant proportion of the population with incomes below the subsistence minimum. The results of the evaluation can be useful for creating agri-food policy measures that will ensure, maintain and improve the level of food security at both a regional and national level. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The article analyzes the domestic and world methods of assessing the level of foodsecurity. The national peculiarities of food security are considered, its level in Ukraine is analyzedaccording to the indicators of daily energy value of human diet, consumption of differenttypes of food per capita, food structure and food independence. The calculated indicators ofadequacy of consumption for certain foods are quite low, in particular: fish and fish products;fruits, berries and grapes; milk and dairy products; meat and meat products. These indicatorsare evidence of an imbalance in the diet of the population, which is trying to provide their ownenergy needs through more affordable products. The key problem of food security in Ukrainetoday is the affordability of products. It is the low purchasing power of the population that insome way hinders the development of production and the economy as a whole. |

Słowa kluczowe | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Key words | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Abstrakt | Genetically Modified (GM) crops are crops modified through genetic engineering to improve their quality. Although safety concerns about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still being debated, the food security benefits have led to adoption by many counties. In Nigeria, where most farmers are uneducated and likely unaware of the agricultural technology, the government approved its first biotechnology crop for commercialization in 2018. Level of farmers’ awareness is crucial to acceptance of GM crops, although; this has not been fully explored in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to assess farmers’ awareness for GM crops and the factors that determine their awareness in Oyo state, Nigeria, using primary data collected in 2018 with the aid of well-structured questionnaires from 242 smallholder farmers. Principal component analysis and Tobit regression model were used for data analysis. Results showed that farmers were aged 43 years with farm size of 3.57 ha, farming experience of 14 years and 11 years of education. Most farmers were male (71.90%), married (67.36%), not members of farmer groups (64.46%) and sourced their seeds from non-credible sources (85.12%). Most farmers (52.07%) had either not heard of or did not know of any benefits/costs of GM crops, hence; were not aware of GM crops. Factors that influenced awareness of GM crops were being a male farmer, years of education and source of seeds. The study concluded that increasing years of education and ensuring use of credible seed sources will increase awareness of the costs and benefits of GM crops among farmers. |

Słowa kluczowe | adoption spell, Weibull, static, potato varieties, Ethiopia |
Key words | adoption spell, Weibull, static, potato varieties, Ethiopia |
Abstrakt | Potato is mainly tagged as a food security crop in Ethiopia. However, its productivity remains low due to low adoption of improved technologies by smallholder farmers. Duration models, namely, Parametric (Weibull) and Non-parametric (Kaplan Meier) were used to analyze the data gathered from 365 sample farmers. The Non-parametric result revealed that the average duration that potato growers should wait before adopting a new variety is about 3.5 years. The Weibull regression indicated that timely availability of seed, access to labor and irrigation water, land size, and adaptation strategy by farmers are found to be factors curtailing the timeframe to adopt improved potato varieties. The regression analysis revealed that costs of inputs such as manure and compost, environmental and market factors such as drought, pest and disease outbreaks, price variability of potato seed, and quality of potato seed were found to be factors influencing adoption decisions of improved potato varieties by smallholder farmers. |

Słowa kluczowe | soja, łubin słodki, koszty uprawy, efektywność ekonomiczna |
Key words | soybean, sweet lupine, costs of growing, economic efficiency |
Dane dotyczące produkcji, kosztów bezpośrednich i nakładów związanych z uprawą soi i łubinu zebrano w 2015 i 2017 roku w systemie AGROKOSZTY. Dane o kosztach pośrednich pochodziły z Polskiego FADN. W opracowaniu wykorzystano głównie pionową analizę porównawczą. Wykazano, że w 2017 roku uprawa obu rozpatrywanych gatunków generowała wyższe dochody niż w 2015 roku. Jednakże uprawa łubinu słodkiego była opłacalna w 2015 i w 2017 roku, podczas gdy uprawa soi jedynie w 2017 roku. |
Abstract | Soybean and lupine belong to legumes and their seeds are a valuable source of vegetable protein. Therefore, due to successively growing animal production, in Poland and other countries of the European Union, it is promoted to increase the area of cultivation of these plants, especially in the context of food security. However, if farmers should grow them, if has to be profitable. The aim of the study was to assess of economic effectiveness from cultivation of soybean and sweet lupin in individual farms in Poland. Data on production, direct costs and expenditure on growing soybean and lupine were collected in 2015 and 2017 in the AGROKOSZTY system. Data on indirect costs came from the Polish FADN. The study mainly uses vertical comparative analysis. It was shown, that in 2017 the cultivation of both cultivars generated a higher income than in 2015. However, sweet lupine cultivation was profitable in 2015 and in 2017, while soybean only in 2017. |

Title | Multidimensional Determinants of National Food Security in Azerbaijan: an Application of the ARDL Approach |
Słowa kluczowe | food availability, food access, food stability, Azerbaijan |
Key words | food availability, food access, food stability, Azerbaijan |
Abstrakt | Food intake is a prerequisite for human beings to live a healthy life style. The attainment of food security is crucial and is a prime development priority for all developing countries. The inability to provide reliable evidence of national food security has remained a problem for both policymakers and researchers alike. The present study helps fill this gap by incorporating the multidimensional determinants of food security at the national level in Azerbaijan. The specific objectives of the study are to evaluate the short-term and long-term dynamics of these determinants on food security. The empirical analysis draws from nationally representative time series data over the period 1991 to 2018, taken from FAO and WDI. The ARDL model suggested that food import, exchange rate, inflation, climate change, and urban population growth harm national food security dynamics of Azerbaijan. On the other hand, trade to GDP ratio has a positive impact on food security. Overall results suggest that there is a pressing need to improve its institutional framework if the Azerbaijan government sincerely desires to have sustainable food security, as organizations control all other issues. |

Słowa kluczowe | bezpieczeństwo żywnościowe, kraje Europy Wschodniej |
Key words | food security, Eastern Europe countries |
Abstract | The aim of the article is to present the state of food security in Poland and the three neighbouring Eastern European countries: Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The analysed countries differ in terms of the size of their economic potential, the size of the economies, and the level of their development. The economy of each country is also marked by specific characteristics. In the first part, the paper presents the theoretical basis of food security as an element of economic security. In the next part, the characteristics of the analysed countries are presented showing their specificity and main determinants of development. The empirical part describes the state of food security in the examined countries using the Global Food Security Index, which was developed at the request of DuPont by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Three components of the food safety index are presented: price availability, access to food as well as food quality and safety. Considering some determinants of food safety components, an attempt was made to assess the impact of economic development of individual countries on their food security |

Abstrakt | The main purpose of the study is to identify food security problems in Sub-Saharan African countries. Despite progress in increasing food security in the world, it is still one of the most important challenges facing Sub- -Saharan Africa. The research shows that the food security is different across countries. The more favourable situation takes place in South Africa, Botswana, while at the other extreme are countries such as Madagascar, Burundi and Sierra Leone. The economic affordability of food seems to be the most important problem for these countries. So an inclusive growth could be a chance to improve the level of food security. |

Abstract | The consequence of multidimensional and multilevel idea of food security is the large number of definitions and measures. The aim of this article was an attempt to systematize food security measurement methods and to indicate their advantages and disadvantages based on the literature review. Food security measurement methods were divided into five groups. Although none of the presented methods does not address this problem in a comprehensive and error-free manner, it is clear from a review of the literature that experience-based food insecurity scales methods are very popular and appreciated among food security researchers, particularly at national and local level. |

Boczar P. Białko roślinne – źródła, koszty produkcji i jakość
Autor | Paweł Boczar |
Tytuł | Białko roślinne – źródła, koszty produkcji i jakość |
Title | Plant Protein – Sources, Production Costs and Quality |
Słowa kluczowe | białko, koszty produkcji, wartość odżywcza białka |
Key words | protein, production costs, protein quality |
Abstrakt | Białko należy do podstawowych składników odżywczych niezbędnych do utrzymania życia. |
Abstract | Protein is one of the basic nutrients necessary to maintain life. Global forecasts show that protein will be the basic macro component limiting global food security. Vegetable protein dominates the global structure of protein consumption. The primary source of vegetable protein are cereals, and among them, wheat. The article assumes that the main source for the growing protein demand will remain its current sources, because the factors determining the use of a given raw material are its availability, cost and quality. Therefore, the article attempts to characterize the main sources of vegetable protein in terms of protein production per unit area, production costs of 1 kg protein and their quality. The analysis of production costs of individual protein sources was made on the basis of data from farms belonging to the countries (or groups of countries) of its main producers or exporters. The quality of the analyzed proteins was characterized using: Chemical Score (SC) and Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). From among the protein sources which were analyzed, the highest yield per unit area and the lowest direct production costs are found in soy protein. This protein is also characterized by the highest biological value considering the value of PDCAAS. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | Within the framework of implementation of overarching national tasks, special attention is paid to the food production and the matter of keeping up with the consumer demand for quality food, which is of national significance. The poultry industry is able to make its fairly considerable contribution into solving the problems of the consumer demand for valuable healthy food products; and to create conditions for the national food security owing to this industry economic growth based on its production potential development and strengthening. The domestic and foreign practice clearly demonstrates that it is possible to provide the population with quality food within a relatively short term, primarily due to the increase of egg and poultry meat production. The poultry industry is not only the most dynamic and fast-growing branch of the livestock farming, but also it has the most intensive production methods. The aim of this article is to determine the influence and the role of the poultry industry on providing the population with food supplies in present-day conditions in the world. |

Jaworska M. FOOD IMPORTS AND FOOD SECURITY OF MAIN GLOBAL MARKET PLAYERS
Autor | Magdalena Jaworska |
Tytuł | FOOD IMPORTS AND FOOD SECURITY OF MAIN GLOBAL MARKET PLAYERS |
Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | food, food security, importers, international trade |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | The main purpose of this paper was to assess the openness of trade in food products in the context of changes in food security levels. The period covered by this study is 1995–2015. The research was based on outcomes reported by main players of the global market. The basic source of data were online databases and reports. Once collected, the data was analysed with the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Selected statistical methods, indices of structure and dynamics, indicators of economic openness and indicators related to three dimensions of security (availability, access and stability) were used. The analysis resulted in numerous conclusions. In the study period, food imports followed a global growth trend with alternating periods of contrasting developments. In the countries covered by this study, the openness of trade in food was higher than that of global imports and followed a growth trend. The singularities of the development of the agri-food sector were reflected in decreasing values of the exports-to-imports ratio, and were decisive for the positive growth rate of per capita agri-food output. According to the analysis of relationships between changes in trade levels and selected food security indicators, imports proved to be positively correlated with physical and economic availability, and negatively correlated with stability. Based on the results, a general conclusion may be drawn that economic growth resulted in structural changes which contributed to improving access to food. |

Title | Economic Access to Food in Countries of the European Union |
Słowa kluczowe | ekonomiczna dostępność żywności, bezpieczeństwo żywnościowe, konsumpcja żywności, dochody gospodarstw domowych, Unia Europejska |
Key words | economic access to food, food security, food consumption, household income, European Union |
Abstract | Satisfying hunger and thirst is a basic right of every human. The economic access to food is one of the four necessary conditions to provide food security of countries and their citizens. Data from FAO, European Parliament or statistics from Eurostat show that the problem of economic access to food concerns countries of the European Union as well. The aim of the paper is to present the magnitude of the problem of economic access to food in the EU countries. The conducted research proves that the described problem cannot be underestimated. The food expenditure still constitutes to be one of the main groups of households’ expenditures, for instance in countries like Romania or Lithuania, where it exceeds 20% of overall expenditure. More than half of the citizens of the EU struggle to cover the expenditure with earned income. The situation is even harder because of the uneven distribution of malnutrition in particular countries. |

Title | Hunger Solution: One-Dimensional and Multi-Dimensional Food Security Programs |
Słowa kluczowe | categorization, classification, one-dimension, multi-dimension, food security |
Key words | categorization, classification, one-dimension, multi-dimension, food security |
Abstrakt | Addressing hunger requires many different programs to tackle this issue. These programs need to be organized in an effective way, and so far, no evidence exists of attempts made to categorize hunger solution programs. This study takes the first step in suggesting a new approach to hunger program categorization. The two categories suggested are one-dimensional hunger programs and multi-dimensional hunger programs. The first category emphasizes a solution focused on one channel of activity to address the hunger problem. The second category emphasizes that hunger is a complex, multi-dimensional problem that requires a multi-pronged solution, working simultaneously through several channels to address hunger. This study tests six food security programs, discusses each profile’s working plans, and determines which category each program applies to. Categorization makes the study of hunger programs much easier and helps to identify similarity between proposes solutions. It has a practical side too. For example, it could serve as a basis for developing other new ideas for this issue or help to compare and determine effective programs or solutions. The two categories offered in this study for food security programs could also be easily applied to other hunger programs. |
