Title | Changes in the Value of Used Fertilizers and Plant Protection Products in the Countries of the European Union in the Years 2010-2018 |
Słowa kluczowe | nawozy, środki ochrony roślin, Unia Europejska, metoda Warda |
Key words | fertilizers, plant protection products, European Union, Ward method |
W artykule próbowano przedstawić i porównać zmiany wartości zużytych nawozów i środków ochrony roślin w krajach Unii Europejskiej w latach 2010-2018. |
Abstract | Currently, agricultural means of production are of great importance in agribusiness, in particular mineral fertilizers and chemical plant protection products. The article attempts to present and compare changes in the value of used fertilizers and plant protection products in European Union countries in 2010-2018. Changes in the value of used fertilizers and plant protection products per 1 ha of UAA and changes in the share of these means of production in intermediate consumption were examined. It was found that the value of used fertilizers and plant protection products per 1 ha of UAA increased on average in the EU. Their share in intermediate consumption also increased. As a result of grouping objects using the Ward method, 4 clusters of countries were obtained, which differed in terms of the proposed features, while the countries that created the given cluster were characterized by similar values of variables. The countries where both a clear increase in the value of used fertilizers and plant protection products per unit area as well as a significant increase in their value in intermediate consumption were observed: Lithuania, Bulgaria and Estonia. However, a decline in demand for the discussed means of production occurred in Belgium, Croatia, Slovenia, Denmark, Finland and Portugal. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | In the Czech Republic, and possibly in many other eastern European countries, organic production still has potential for further growth. Over the past three decades, organic farming has become an essential alternative to farming practices. An increase was observed among acreage, the number of farms, and also consumer spending on organic production. After the EU accession, organic farming became part of the agricultural policy related to other than production function and therefore supported by EU finance. The contribution aimed to derive which of the two factors was more important for organic farming expansion - the pull factor (market demand) or the push factor (financial support). Using Pearson's correlation coefficient stronger relationship was observed for financial aid, which was a driving force for the organic agriculture spread in the Czech Republic. |

Słowa kluczowe | foreign economic activity, agribusiness, international trade, export and import of agricultural products, Western region of Ukraine |
Key words | foreign economic activity, agribusiness, international trade, export and import of agricultural products, Western region of Ukraine |
Abstrakt | The article is devoted to researching peculiarities and trends of foreign economic activity of agribusinesses in the Western region of Ukraine according to the terms of the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement. The authors discuss the theoretical essence of agribusiness, as a kind of entrepreneurship, and the nature of foreign economic activity of enterprises. The main conditions of free trade in agricultural products introduced by the terms of the Agreement are determined and their influence on agribusiness export-import operation dynamics in the Western economic region is analyzed. The contribution of certain regions to forming agrarian product export and import volume and structure is considered and the reasons for the considerable advantages of the Lviv region in foreign trade turnover of the Western region are elucidated. It was found that agribusiness cooperation with foreign partners is mainly realized by indirect methods through trade agency organizations or agrarian holding companies. The structure dynamics of production goods for export and import by agribusinesses was studied. Based on the results, some negative tendencies for the Ukrainian economy were noted. They include the preservation of raw exports with a high share of plant origin products and timber, and the predominance of ready-made products with high added value in the import structure. It was established that the Agreement and social political events in Ukraine changed the direction of some export-import flows of agribusiness from CIS countries towards the markets of the European Union and Asian countries. According to the scale of external trade operations with enterprises of the Western region of Ukraine, in general, and within certain trade groups, in particular, country-leaders are defined. Some positive and negative consequences of changes in the foreign economic activity vector are described. And finally, measures which will ensure an expansion and strengthening of Ukraine’s agribusiness presence on international market, are suggested. |

Słowa kluczowe | pandemia COVID-19, eksport, import, produkty rolno-spożywcze, Polska |
Key words | pandemic COVID-19, export, import, agri-food products, Poland |
Abstract | The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020 significantly changed the conditions for the development of trade in agri-food products. The aim of the article is to assess the impact of the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic on the agri-food trade of Poland. The analysis was based on unpublished data from the Ministry of Finance, using descriptive statistics method. Preliminary trade data for the first half of 2020 showed that with few expectations Polish agri-food exports performed well during lockdown, that is in the period of the greatest restrictions related to the movement of people introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic. It resulted, inter alia, from the fact that food is a basic necessity (such as e.g. medicines) and is characterized by lower income elasticity of demand, and also from relatively small disruptions in production. |

Abstrakt | The article analyzes the domestic and world methods of assessing the level of foodsecurity. The national peculiarities of food security are considered, its level in Ukraine is analyzedaccording to the indicators of daily energy value of human diet, consumption of differenttypes of food per capita, food structure and food independence. The calculated indicators ofadequacy of consumption for certain foods are quite low, in particular: fish and fish products;fruits, berries and grapes; milk and dairy products; meat and meat products. These indicatorsare evidence of an imbalance in the diet of the population, which is trying to provide their ownenergy needs through more affordable products. The key problem of food security in Ukrainetoday is the affordability of products. It is the low purchasing power of the population that insome way hinders the development of production and the economy as a whole. |

Abstrakt | Turkey plays a significant role in global wheat trade, importing wheat grain and exporting processed wheat products such as pasta, flour and biscuits. Wheat growing areas in Turkey have shown a decrease of about 10% over the last decade. Although an increase in yields keeps the production amount in balance, policies toward the wheat sector have reached a more critical point due to an increasing population and growing demand on the wheat flour sector. In this study, the profitability and sustainability of the sector were analyzed by using the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) approach, and by examining the effects of the policies that have been applied on the wheat market recently. According to the PAM results, domestic wheat prices are higher than world prices due to existing policies and the wheat sector is not competitive without support. |

Abstrakt | Improving production efficiency, increasing gross and marketable output is inextricablylinked to comprehensive intensification, that is, with the growth of additional investmentsin the development of agricultural production. The increase in capital investments isthe basis for strengthening and improving the material and technical base, and for implementingscientific and technological progress. Increasing the intensity of agriculture and animalhusbandry contributes to more efficient use of land and livestock, increasing crop yields andlivestock productivity. The main link between crop production and animal husbandry is feedproduction. Creating a solid feed base is the most important condition for the development ofanimal husbandry. Its state and level of development determine the possibility of increasingthe number of animals, increasing their productivity, improving the quality of products andreducing the cost of the latter. It is proved that the level of productivity of animals by 50-80%is determined by their feeding. Due to the importance of feed, it is necessary that their productionis ahead of the pace of needs (growth of livestock and its productivity). When forminga feed base, it is important to take into account not only the total volume of feed that willensure the production of a certain amount of products, but also their balance with nutrients. As a rule, feed, namely green feed, silage, haylage, is not a commodity product, that is, thereare no permanent markets for them. These types of feed are grown by those farms that areengaged in animal husbandry and must create their own raw material base for obtaining themain feed. |

Key words | efficiency, farmers, table grapes, South Africa, stochastic frontier model |
Abstrakt | Table grape production plays an important role in the economy of many countries in Africa. It serves as a source of income for the people who are engaged in its production and being one of the enterprises that is labour-intensive, thereby providing employment for more people. The main purpose of this study was to analyse the economic efficiency of table grape production in Waterberg and Sekhukhune Districts of Limpopo province, South Africa. The study used primary data collected through administration of structured questionnaires on a sample of 12 farmers by employing a snowball sampling method. Analytical tools employed include descriptive statistics (such as tables and frequencies), Stochastic Frontier Model and Technical Inefficiency Model. Results from data analysis revealed that in terms of efficiency, farming experience (p<0.01), educational level (p<0.05), household size (p<0.10) and age of farmer (p<0.10) were associated with increased efficiency indicating that these factors play important roles in ensuring that resources used in the production of table grapes enhanced productivity and were not wasted. Also, technical efficiency among farmers was found to range from 0.8 to 1, with a mean of 0.89, thus implying a major possibility for improvement in production. However, the allocative efficiency was found to range from 0.47 to 1, with a mean of 0.68. This indicates that some farmers were finding it difficult to allocate their resources efficiently. Again, economic efficiency ranges from 0.56 to 1, with a mean of 0.73, an indication that most of the farmers were economically efficient. Meanwhile, some of the constraints faced by these farmers include high electricity bills and labour costs, water shortages as well as instability around land policy. The study therefore recommends capacity building of farmers through education and other skill enhancement programmes. Also, provision of incentives to encourage youth participation in farming through internship programmes is very important to increase farm productivity. |

W nawiązaniu do poruszanej w badaniach tematyki, za problem badawczy przyjęto rolę i znaczenie sektora usług w gospodarkach państw Unii Europejskiej w XXI w. Polska zaklasyfikowana została do państw o średnim potencjale z wyjątkiem wskaźnika określającego wartość produkcji – poziom niski. |
Abstract | This study addresses widely understood issues regarding productivity in the service sector and also extends to aspects of innovativeness within the sector. Results of the research presented in the article are based on secondary data gathered from the European base of statistical knowledge – Eurostat. The research also aims to evaluate the role and meaning of the service sector in national economies of EU countries in the 21st century. From this perspective, one of the goals was to identify the production potential within the service sectors of EU members. Methods used to achieve this goal included secondary data analysis, a review of domestic and foreign literature on the subject and basic statistical methods (standard deviation, arithmetic average), especially when aggregating countries into groups by specific production potential of service sectors. Taking into consideration all the indicators of production potential, which were analysed in the study (number of enterprises, number of people hired, value of production) for EU countries, the service sectors which had the highest production potential were found within: France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain – with the exception of production value. Poland was classified into the group of countries with average potential, except for the indicator identifying the value of production, which had a low level. |

Abstrakt | In this study, for the 2012M1-2020M1 period, the relationship between Poland’s real effective exchange rate and its food and animal exports were examined by the bounds test. The stationary analyses of variables were examined by the ADF and PP tests. According to the results of a cointegration test, a cointegration relation among the real effective exchange rate, food and live animal exports, as well as industrial production was determined. It was also concluded that the real effective exchange rate has a long-term negative impact on Poland's food and live animal exports. This research also established that a 1% increase in the real effective exchange rate in the long-term would decrease Poland's food and animal exports by 3.091%. Also, industrial production has a positive impact on Poland’s food and animal exports, as expected. It was determined that a 1% increase in industrial production would increase Poland’s food and animal exports by 2.803%. On the other hand, the error correction term coefficient was found to be -0.119, indicating that 11% of the imbalance in the short-term will be recovered in the next period. |

Key words | animal production, results of agricultural production, resource efficiency in agriculture |
Abstract | The aim of the study is to assess the results of managing production resources in farms focused on animal production, which were covered by agricultural accounting in the FADN system in 2016. The analysis covered the production and economic results as well as the productivity and profitability of land, labor and capital resources of farms focused on dairy cattle, swine and slaughter cattle, sheep and goats. The results of the researched farms presented in the study point to a significantly higher level of production and economic results as well as resource management efficiency in pig farms, especially in relation to farms keeping cattle for slaughter, sheep and goats, which resulted from their larger scale and intensity of production. Farms specializing in slaughter of cattle, sheep and goats obtained a negative economic result, therefore subsidies for the operation of such farms were conditioned by their positive final result and economic efficiency of resource management. |

Słowa kluczowe | wydajność pracy, rolnictwo, modele deterministyczne, Unia Europejska |
Key words | labour productivity, agriculture, deterministic models, European Union |
W zaproponowanych trzech modelach dekompozycji wydajności pracy uwzględniono siedem czynników (wskaźników), tj. produktywność nakładów, produktywność ziemi, wskaźnik wartości dodanej, opodatkowanie produkcji, dopłaty do produkcji, uzbrojenie zasobów pracy w ziemię oraz poziom intensywności produkcji rolniczej. W świetle analizy deterministycznej głównymi czynnikami wzrostu wydajności pracy w rolnictwie UE-28 i w Polsce były wzrost intensywności produkcji oraz wzrost uzbrojenia pracy w zasoby ziemi. Korzystny kierunek przemian wydajności pracy osłabiała malejąca efektywność wytwarzania mierzona produktywnością nakładów oraz udziałem wartości dodanej w przychodach. |
Abstract | The main aim of the work was to present the changes observed in the labour productivity in EU agriculture in years 2005-2016. The author proposed also the methodical decomposition of the labor productivity ratio in agriculture. Seven factors (ratios) have been taken into account in three models of labor productivity decomposition. These factors are: inputs productivity, land productivity, value added index, production taxation, production subsidies, equipment employed in agricultural land and the level of agricultural production intensity. The use of the deterministic method allowed to analyse the changes in labour productivity from the perspectives both in the EU agriculture (EU-28) and in the Polish agriculture. Performed studies seems to prove that in the years 2005-2016 the labor productivity measured by gross value added increased in case of EU-28 by average 2.13% and in the case of EU-15 only by 0.98%. At the same time, higher increase was observed in the case of EU-13 which equal to 3.45%. It may suggest that can be observe the ongoing process of the labor productivity convergence in EU agriculture. In the light of deterministic analysis, it was possible to specify the main factors contributing to the increase in labor productivity in agriculture in the EU-28 and in Poland, which are the increase in production intensity and the increase in agricultural land/labour relation. However, it should be also noted that the favorable direction of changes in labour productivity was weakened by the decreasing efficiency of production measured by the inputs productivity and the share of value added in revenues. |

Key words | external benefits, sustainable production, vineyards, climate change |
Abstract | The research aimed to determine the types of external benefits associated with running the vineyard in accordance to with the principles of sustainable production, and then, based on conclusions from the assessment of the development of vineyards growing in Poland under climate change conditions, to examine consumer opinions on their willingness to pay for wine originating from crops that generate positive externalities. It was found that the cultivation of grapes in a sustainable manner is characterized by the existence of external benefits. These benefits result from the local character of public goods, which include primarily the ecosystem described as terroir and related elements such as biodiversity and landscape. They interact in a synergistic way to other external social benefits, such as tourist attractiveness or cultural heritage. It has been shown that viticulture for wine and wine production in Poland is growing rapidly, and climate change will affect further potential development opportunities for this sector. The surveyed consumers pointed out that the wine attributes such as the organic way of production or practices responding to climate change are important for them. For the most part, they are willing to pay for it more than for features related to other external benefits, i.e. biodiversity or landscape. It is argued, that orientation of Polish vineyards to produce in a way that generates external benefits, ie. organically, will allow to take advantage of the network effect which may translate into the desire of consumers to pay a higher price for wine. |

Abstrakt | The processing of organic products in Poland develops, the number of organic entities increases and there arechanges in the structure in individual industries. The aim of this article was to evaluate the trends and the degreeof changes that have occurred in the number of processing plants and the structure of organic processing industriesin Poland in the years 2004–2017. The analysis covered eight industries of processing organic products.Over thirteen years, there has been a steady increase in the number of organic processing plants, despite thelow amount of organic production and the lack of developed and sustainable forms of cooperation at variouslevels – from the producer to the consumer. The low consumption of organic products (compared to Europeancountries) also shows down and shapes changes that occur in the structure in particular processing sectors. |
