Title | Outlook of Present Organic Agriculture Policies and Future Needs in Sri Lanka |
Słowa kluczowe | conventional agriculture, organic agriculture, organic farming policies, Sri Lanka |
Key words | conventional agriculture, organic agriculture, organic farming policies, Sri Lanka |
Abstrakt | Many countries are formulating organic agriculture or organic farming policies aimed at sustainable agricultural development. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: to understand the present situation of organic agriculture policies in Sri Lanka and also in other countries where successful organic agriculture is operating; identify problems in the organic agriculture sector; and suggest potential policy measures to be implemented in Sri Lanka in future. The research was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a thorough literature review was conducted to study the suitable policies available in other countries and also in Sri Lanka at present. In the second stage, two field surveys were carried out using pre-tested questionnaires, from December 2019 to May 2020, in order to gather farmers’ and extension officers’ information related to organic farming policy suggestions. According to the findings of the literature review, organic systems in some countries are more integrated with national strategic plans and visions. Those governments are more involved in new initiatives and farmers are encouraged to go organic through reliable and feasible policies. Although Sri Lanka has a high potential for organic agriculture, at present it is at an initial stage. While most organic products in Sri Lanka go to the export market, a small portion is kept at local markets. Demand for organic products in export as well as domestic markets is increasing. Even though there are seven international food certification agencies operating in the country as external inspection and certification bodies, a limited number of accredited certifications exist for products on the domestic market. Results of the farmers’ survey showed that even if farmers have a significant level of knowledge, few of them practice organic farming due to several existing problems. Moreover, extension officers have also identified similar types of problems that are faced by the farmers related to organic farming. Evaluation of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) related to organic agriculture in the country helped to identify key problems facing policy-makers when balancing the supply and demand sides of organic products. Also, in developing organic agriculture, an effective linkage and coordination among government and private participants is crucial. Therefore, in Sri Lanka in this context, strategic focus on policy support for organic agriculture is needed. Current organic farming programs need to be revised in order to formulate policies covering all areas related to production, handling, processing, certification, labeling and marketing, in order to bring the benefits of organic agriculture to farmers, marketers and consumers in a fair manner. |

Słowa kluczowe | efficiency, farmers, table grapes, South Africa, stochastic frontier model |
Key words | efficiency, farmers, table grapes, South Africa, stochastic frontier model |
Abstrakt | Table grape production plays an important role in the economy of many countries in Africa. It serves as a source of income for the people who are engaged in its production and being one of the enterprises that is labour-intensive, thereby providing employment for more people. The main purpose of this study was to analyse the economic efficiency of table grape production in Waterberg and Sekhukhune Districts of Limpopo province, South Africa. The study used primary data collected through administration of structured questionnaires on a sample of 12 farmers by employing a snowball sampling method. Analytical tools employed include descriptive statistics (such as tables and frequencies), Stochastic Frontier Model and Technical Inefficiency Model. Results from data analysis revealed that in terms of efficiency, farming experience (p<0.01), educational level (p<0.05), household size (p<0.10) and age of farmer (p<0.10) were associated with increased efficiency indicating that these factors play important roles in ensuring that resources used in the production of table grapes enhanced productivity and were not wasted. Also, technical efficiency among farmers was found to range from 0.8 to 1, with a mean of 0.89, thus implying a major possibility for improvement in production. However, the allocative efficiency was found to range from 0.47 to 1, with a mean of 0.68. This indicates that some farmers were finding it difficult to allocate their resources efficiently. Again, economic efficiency ranges from 0.56 to 1, with a mean of 0.73, an indication that most of the farmers were economically efficient. Meanwhile, some of the constraints faced by these farmers include high electricity bills and labour costs, water shortages as well as instability around land policy. The study therefore recommends capacity building of farmers through education and other skill enhancement programmes. Also, provision of incentives to encourage youth participation in farming through internship programmes is very important to increase farm productivity. |

Słowa kluczowe | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Key words | GMOs, smallholder farmers, awareness for GM crops, Credible seed sources, Agricultural technology |
Abstrakt | Genetically Modified (GM) crops are crops modified through genetic engineering to improve their quality. Although safety concerns about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still being debated, the food security benefits have led to adoption by many counties. In Nigeria, where most farmers are uneducated and likely unaware of the agricultural technology, the government approved its first biotechnology crop for commercialization in 2018. Level of farmers’ awareness is crucial to acceptance of GM crops, although; this has not been fully explored in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to assess farmers’ awareness for GM crops and the factors that determine their awareness in Oyo state, Nigeria, using primary data collected in 2018 with the aid of well-structured questionnaires from 242 smallholder farmers. Principal component analysis and Tobit regression model were used for data analysis. Results showed that farmers were aged 43 years with farm size of 3.57 ha, farming experience of 14 years and 11 years of education. Most farmers were male (71.90%), married (67.36%), not members of farmer groups (64.46%) and sourced their seeds from non-credible sources (85.12%). Most farmers (52.07%) had either not heard of or did not know of any benefits/costs of GM crops, hence; were not aware of GM crops. Factors that influenced awareness of GM crops were being a male farmer, years of education and source of seeds. The study concluded that increasing years of education and ensuring use of credible seed sources will increase awareness of the costs and benefits of GM crops among farmers. |

Abstrakt | The purpose of the article is to substantiate the emergence of new – and the development of existing – factors and segmentation criteria for meeting consumer needs and increasing the efficiency of marketing activities for Ukrainian enterprises under modern market conditions. The object of the research is to analyze the process of development and any increases in the effectiveness of marketing segmentation. The subject of research is the theoretical, methodical and practical provisions of the formation of targeted marketing segmentation for the markets of Ukrainian enterprises. The goal of the research is to evaluate the direction and type of market segmentation that determines future target segments for enterprises and their share of existing markets. We present the characteristics of enterprises that work on market relations for the production and sale of computer devices that provide network connections. Our method was to estimate the direction and type of market segmentation in order to determine the prospective segments for such enterprises and their share of the existing market. In order to evaluate the attractiveness of target segments for Ukrainian enterprises, a survey was conducted to validate customer reactions. The analyzed variables included: the length of time a person uses his/her computer device; the reasons for possible changes and important settings when choosing a computer device; the timeframe for buying a computer device. The results of the questionnaire are separated by gender, social and geographic factors, as well as by family composition and age of respondents, taking into account the stages of their life cycle, as well as their educational level and professions – for three enterprises. Particular attention was paid to the psychographic factors of occupation and social class. The questionnaire also contained a self-assessment section on the psychological qualities of the consumer and on their psychography, which we analyzed. The hypotheses presented by individual factors and the consumer segment, separated by the results of the survey, and the analysis of the respondents' answers, are presented. Confirmation of the hypotheses and isolation of the consumer segment are given. |

Abstrakt | The aim of paper is to present the level of respondents involvement in the commune affairs. The results of the analyses presented in this paper come from surveys conducted using a questionnaire survey among residents of rural communes in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. After rejecting incomplete and/or illogical questionnaires, 2,409 respondents were qualified for the analysis. The results confirmed the relationship between social capital and involvement of inhabitants in the community affairs. Verification of the existence of a relationship between the involvement in the commune affairs (social capital component) and the education of the respondents was verified. The research results indicate the diversity of involvement in level of education groups. The respondents with a minimum level of secondary education noted a positive average level of involvement, which means that they showed more interest in commune matters and willingness to get involved in them. The highest level of involvement was noted in the group of people with post-secondary education. Respondents with basic vocational and elementary and gymnasial education more often showed lack of involvement in the commune’s affairs, and thus they recorded negative average results of engagement. |

Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | glocalization, Ahanta, Ghana |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | Issues of tourists’ safety are gaining grounds in Ghana especially in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region where Ghana discovered commercial crude oil in Cape Three Points in 2007 and started drilling in 2010. Using purposive sampling method, observation, interviews and questionnaires, this study sought to examine the extent to which tourists perceive their own safety in this destination which is old but now renewed tourist destination due to the oil find in Ghana. Welcoming and friendly atmosphere to tourists was indicative of a safe and a secured destination for tourists. The display of globalization showed in the form of ‘glocalization’ in this destination. There is a conflict between land use for agricultural purposes and tourist facilities since the predominant cash crop in this area is oil palm, hence a threat to agricultural sustainability. It is recommended that the security agents should as a matter of urgency put in place the appropriate structures in this tourist destination and farming area for safety. |

Title | |
Słowa kluczowe | communication, health care, patients, medical personnel, management |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | A health care is characterised of creating an individual, specific relation between representatives of health care units and patients, which means that not only medical staff professionalism but also an empathetic attitude towards patients are important questions. Literature regarding the issue of communication with patients is growing, there are as well workshops in an effective communication, nevertheless the topic is still of minor importance. Meanwhile, relations between medical personnel and patients may put a major impact on the quality of health care as well as patients satisfaction with medical services, what is important from a management point of view. A proper way of patients’ treatment by medical personnel may result not only in better attitude towards therapy, but also it may influence a more efficient management of health care facilities, as patient satisfied with medical services may recommend an organisation, which may have a positive impact on an institution’s image, allowing a manager to focus on more important aspects of an institution management. For the above reasons it is important to get to know medical personnel’s attitude to developing as well as improving communication skills in order to provide a holistic patients care, what can significantly influence a health care units management. Medical staff communication skills are important not only from a treatment perspective, but they can also be significant from the perspective of health care organisations management. The study material was gathered in the first quarter of 2014. In the final analysis questionnaires from 113 representatives of various medical professions were taken into consideration. The study results show that in the process of medical professionals education there is only a little attention paid to acquiring communication skills regarding communication between a patient and medical personnel. Also, the hypothesis according to which medical personnel is satisfied with communication with patients was confirmed. Furthermore, medical staff agree in stating that they care for a proper communication with patients. Conclusions coming from the study results may define a specific way of health care units management, which should comprise, among others, financial resources for trainings in medical personnel soft skills improvement. |

Abstract | Nowadays, it is quite important that business companies understand brand awareness and consumer profile for their products and services. They can take advantage of this information to properly adapt their marketing strategies to the needs of their targetedmarkets and segments. This research paper aims at measuring brand awareness and consumer profile for different types of milk in Tirana. Through a set of face to face questionnaires, it is revealed that those in charge of purchases in the household are pretty aware of the vast majority of the milk brands available in Tirana market. They also give high evaluation scores to the most known brands. On the other hand, consumers’ profile for different types of milk (UHT vs. pasteurized or fresh) seems to differ based on some specific socio-economic variables of the household and the person in charge of the purchases. The consumers with the highest income and education level are more aware about food safety importance. Such consumers are leaned more towards purchasing UHT milk. |

Title | THE ACTIVITY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN FOSTERING THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURIST BRAND PRODUCTS OF NATURAL VALUABLE AREAS OF THE LUBLIN VOIVODESHIP |
Słowa kluczowe | markowy produkt turystyczny, samorząd gminny, obszary przyrodniczo cenne, województwo lubelskie |
Key words | branded tourist product, municipal government, valuable natural areas, Lublin voivodeship |
Abstract | The aim of this study was to identify the importance of branded tourism products as a factor in the development of communes located in natural valuable areas of the Lublin voivodeship, and to evaluate the activity of municipal authorities in preparing conditions for the creation of branded tourist products. Branding is expensive, so shaping brand products should involve many stakeholders, including the government. Environment in which communes operate makes it hard to imagine managing them without branding. Lack of recognition of various areas of the region is a factor slowing down the development of tourism, but it creates an opportunity of creating brands in line with the expectations of the authorities and residents. In the study diagnostic survey with a questionnaire interview was used. Research material comprised 30 questionnaires, interviews with the mayor. It has been shown that, within the surveyed communes, great natural and cultural values are little used by the local community as lucrative tourist branded products. Nonetheless, there were positive changes, taking up comprehensive coherent marketing activities. |

Key words | European integration, dairy farms |
