Abstrakt | Defining the state of competitiveness for a particular agricultural sector is of great importance. By retaining a competitive market position sustainable economic development of the specific agricultural production is supported. Continuation of its multiple economic functions like providing raw materials for the processing industry, securing rural employment, and utilization of scarce agricultural resources is the focus of competi_x0002_tiveness goals. In the economic theory, there is no unified definition for competitiveness, while there are a va_x0002_riety of approaches to measure it, which is reflected in different applied theoretical frameworks. The research aims to compare the competitiveness of the Bulgarian dairy sector versus the EU, the USA, and New Zealand dairy sectors on the world market for the period after the accession of Bulgaria in the EU. Therefore, a con_x0002_ceptual framework has been chosen developed by Canada’s Task Force for Competitiveness. The framework is based on the ability to gain and sustainably maintain market share. For the chosen period the results show a trend of decline in the competitiveness of the Bulgarian dairy sector and improvement in the competitive_x0002_ness of the EU dairy sector. For the EU comparison, indexes of competitiveness have been calculated for the USA and New Zealand. The USA’s index slightly decreased at the end of the explored period reflecting the increased competition on the world markets while New Zealand’s high index values reveal its position as a leading dairy products exporter. |

Key words | production, export, import, soybean, EU countries |
W badaniach wykorzystano dane wtórne pochodzące z zasobów Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych do spraw Wyżywienia i Rolnictwa (FAO). Największymi importerami soi w UE były Holandia, Hiszpania i Niemcy. |
Abstract | Due to the deficit in feed protein from domestic production, EU countries are significant importers of legume crops and meals, including soybean and soybean meal. The aim of the paper is to present changes in soybean production and trade in selected EU countries in 2000-2017. Secondary data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) database were used in the research. The following issues were discussed: the changes in the volume of soybean production in the countries of its largest producers in the EU, the value and quantity of trade flows in the countries of the largest exporters and importers, their share in trade and trade balance. The volume of soybean production in the EU countries has increased more slowly than the demand for high-protein fodder raw materials, resulting in an increase in the value of soybean imports and making EU countries net importers of this raw material. Unlike in Poland, the increase in the value of imports was not due to an increase in its volume. The Netherlands, Spain and Germany were the largest soybean importers in the EU. |

Abstrakt | Improving production efficiency, increasing gross and marketable output is inextricablylinked to comprehensive intensification, that is, with the growth of additional investmentsin the development of agricultural production. The increase in capital investments isthe basis for strengthening and improving the material and technical base, and for implementingscientific and technological progress. Increasing the intensity of agriculture and animalhusbandry contributes to more efficient use of land and livestock, increasing crop yields andlivestock productivity. The main link between crop production and animal husbandry is feedproduction. Creating a solid feed base is the most important condition for the development ofanimal husbandry. Its state and level of development determine the possibility of increasingthe number of animals, increasing their productivity, improving the quality of products andreducing the cost of the latter. It is proved that the level of productivity of animals by 50-80%is determined by their feeding. Due to the importance of feed, it is necessary that their productionis ahead of the pace of needs (growth of livestock and its productivity). When forminga feed base, it is important to take into account not only the total volume of feed that willensure the production of a certain amount of products, but also their balance with nutrients. As a rule, feed, namely green feed, silage, haylage, is not a commodity product, that is, thereare no permanent markets for them. These types of feed are grown by those farms that areengaged in animal husbandry and must create their own raw material base for obtaining themain feed. |

Słowa kluczowe | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Key words | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Abstrakt | Biomass is a major source of renewable energy in the EU and Poland, stimulating the growth of the wood pellet sector. Wood pellet demand is stimulated by a complex interaction of market forces and policies including EU climate, energy, and environmental regulations, Poland’s program to improve air quality, and subsidies for the replacement of inefficient stoves used by households. This article focuses on the growth of the wood pellet industry, imports and exports in Poland, and wood pellet quality and use by households. The main issues faced by the EU wood pellet sector between 2013 and 2016 are further considered in the context of opinions of Polish wood pellet manufacturers. Industry opinions were collected in response to an open-ended question that probed for the main issues faced by wood pellet producers during the survey implemented by the authors in 2019. Respondents identified difficulties in obtaining raw material for pellet production and poor pellet quality as major problems. Although the majority did not feel concerned about competition from imported wood pellets, a small number of respondents viewed such competition as a problem reflecting the reversal of decreasing imports in 2017. Overall, the domestic wood pellet industry can be expected to grow because of increasing pressure to expand the use of renewable energy and will be driven by the household sector switching to more efficient, wood burning stoves. Additionally, the expanding area of private Polish forests may become a source of much-needed raw material for wood pellet manufacturing. |

Słowa kluczowe | tea, plantations, crop types, climate changes, local ecosystems |
Key words | tea, plantations, crop types, climate changes, local ecosystems |
Abstrakt | The present study demonstrates the reasons for the foundation of tea plantations and conditions of their cultivation. The limitations and negative consequences of cultivation of tea plants along with the ideas for their minimization are shown. Plantations were created to optimize the harvest. However, it has been found that they negatively influence local ecosystems. The global demand for tea leaves is constantly growing. Due to the specific climate requirements of tea plants and progressive climate changes, the arable land area suitable for their cultivation is constantly decreasing. New solutions should be implemented as soon as possible, ensuring a constant supply of raw material. Otherwise, in the next few years tea may become a luxury product. FAO has presented the activities that could reduce the losses. At the moment, the best solution might be to change crop types and diversify sources of raw material. It is also highlighted that there is a need to carry out research aiming at developing varieties of Camella sinensis with lower climate requirements. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | Information and communication technologies (ICT) are becoming more accessible and more widely used indifferent areas of socio-economic activity and in various territories, including rural areas. There is a noticeableincrease in the interest of rural residents in modern technologies, especially those supporting communication. At the same time, it should be noted that despite the small level of ICT skills and competences, ruralareas have great potential that can be expressed in: human resources, the natural environment biodiversity, and raw materials. Therefore, rural areas in Europe should be similar in terms of the use of ICT and shouldnot differ from the level observed in urban areas. The article presents the use of the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process) for multicriteria decision analysisof the use of ICT by natural persons living in rural areas of the European Union (EU), in 2018. The empiricalmaterial used in the research came from the resources of the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). The result of the survey is the ranking of 27 EU countries (Great Britain was omitted). The obtained resultsshowed large disproportions in the use of ICT in rural areas between the countries of the European Union. In the extreme case, between Denmark being the leader of the ranking and Bulgaria, which was in the 27thplace, this differences amounted to 70.7%. |

Abstract | Regions specialized in the organic milk production in Poland represent a small share in the total production of this raw material within the country. Measurement of concentration is one of the key issues in research on the economic structures of market phenomena. The aim of the work was to examine the degree of concentration of the organic milk market in the context of the total milk market, as well as an attempt to answer the question about the possibility of indicating regions specializing in the production of organic milk. The study was carried out using the classical Herfindahl-Hirschman index. A modified version of the formula of the zero unitarization method was also used. The obtained results indicate a moderate degree of concentration of the organic milk market. At the same time, using the modified zero unitarization method, it is possible to clearly identify regions in which the production of organic milk has more economic significance. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | In the paper was presented a comparative analysis of the impact on the environment of the life cycle assessment of boxes made of polypropylene, re-HDPE and cardboard, which are used to transport of dessert apples. For this purpose, the SimaPro 7.1 computer program and attached databases were used. The calculations were made for 48 trading circulations. The obtained results indicate that the biggest negative impact on the environment among the analysed packaging was caused by cardboard boxes. Also packaging from recycled material (re-HDPE) is less friendly to environment than boxes made from new polypropylene. The estimated environmental impact of polypropylene boxes was 4.42 Pt (eco-indicator point), for re- HDPE and cardboard packaging it was 7.5 and 19.7% higher, respectively. The most important factor for the differences between the boxes was the durability of the packaging and the eventual need for multiple repeats of production phase, which include the acquisition of raw materials and processes related to the manufacturing of products. |

Słowa kluczowe | rynek, piwo, chmiel, globalizacja |
Key words | market, beer, hop, globalisation |
Abstrakt | W latach 1980-2016 światowy rynek piwa charakteryzował się wysoką dynamiką rozwoju. Produkcja i obroty handlu zagranicznego znacząco wzrosły. Duże bezpośrednie inwestycje zagraniczne, koncentracja struktur podmiotowych i w konsekwencji dynamiczny wzrost produkcji i eksportu. |
Abstract | Over the period of 1980-2016 the world beer market showed a dynamic development. Both the production and foreign trade volumes considerably increased, which largely resulted from globalisation processes. The production of beer in the world is dominated with large brewing companies. However in recent years their share contracted due to expansion of small-scale brewing. Growing production of beer generates demand for raw materials (malt, hops extract, sugar). The world tendencies were mirrored on the Polish market. Large foreign direct investments along with concentration of production triggered a dynamic growth of production and exports. The share of small breweries in Poland has recently been growing as well. |

Słowa kluczowe | deterministic chaos, recurrence quantification analysis, wheat prices |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | In this article performed was an analysis of the time series which presents the wheat price by means of recurrence quantification analysis. The main research problem was to ascertain whether the time series for this agricultural raw material may be considered as a system in which chaos has the deterministic nature, possibly with slight random disturbances. It was proved that it is justified to believe that the time series under analysis is characterized with the occurrence of deterministic chaos. The literature review led to believe that although this issue had been analysed in a large number of papers, most specialists confirm there is no conclusive evidence of chaos in economic or financial data. |

Title | Plant Protein – Sources, Production Costs and Quality |
Słowa kluczowe | białko, koszty produkcji, wartość odżywcza białka |
Key words | protein, production costs, protein quality |
Abstrakt | Białko należy do podstawowych składników odżywczych niezbędnych do utrzymania życia. |
Abstract | Protein is one of the basic nutrients necessary to maintain life. Global forecasts show that protein will be the basic macro component limiting global food security. Vegetable protein dominates the global structure of protein consumption. The primary source of vegetable protein are cereals, and among them, wheat. The article assumes that the main source for the growing protein demand will remain its current sources, because the factors determining the use of a given raw material are its availability, cost and quality. Therefore, the article attempts to characterize the main sources of vegetable protein in terms of protein production per unit area, production costs of 1 kg protein and their quality. The analysis of production costs of individual protein sources was made on the basis of data from farms belonging to the countries (or groups of countries) of its main producers or exporters. The quality of the analyzed proteins was characterized using: Chemical Score (SC) and Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). From among the protein sources which were analyzed, the highest yield per unit area and the lowest direct production costs are found in soy protein. This protein is also characterized by the highest biological value considering the value of PDCAAS. |

Title | Spatial Diversification of Agricultural Biomass Production of Plant Origin in EU Countries in the Context of Bioeconomy Development |
Słowa kluczowe | biomasa, biogospodarka, państwa Unii Europejskiej, zróżnicowanie przestrzenne |
Key words | biomass, bioeconomy, Eropean Union countries, spatial diversity |
W opracowaniu wykorzystano dane statystyczne pozyskane z EUROSTATU. Okres badawczy obejmował 2015 rok. Do interpretacji badań zastosowano statystykę opisową i parametryczną, wykorzystano wskaźniki struktury, gęstości i natężenia, a także wskaźnik korelacji Pearsona. W toku badań stwierdzono, że w 2015 roku 51,5% wytwarzanej w UE biomasy roślinnej w rolnictwie to produkty uboczne - pochodzące z resztek roślin uprawnych, z roślin pastewnych i biomasy wypasanej. Produkcja biomasy roślinnej cechowała się znacznym zróżnicowaniem przestrzennym zarówno w odniesieniu do biomasy pochodzącej z roślin uprawnych (liderami w tym zakresie były kraje: Francja, Niemcy, Hiszpania, Włochy i Polska), jak i do pozostałej biomasy (największy udział miały: Niemcy, Francja, Polska, Wielka Brytania i Włochy). W 2015 roku na terenie siedmiu krajów (tj. Niemiec, Francji, Polski, Wielkiej Brytanii, Hiszpanii, Włoch i Rumunii) wyprodukowano łącznie blisko ¾ roślinnej biomasy wytwarzanej w UE. |
Abstract | The aim of the article was to identify and assess the spatial diversity of agricultural biomass production of plant origin in EU countries as the basic raw material used to create bioproducts and bioenergy. The study uses statistical data obtained from EUROSTAT. The research period covered 2015. Descriptive and parametric statistics were used to interpret the study, and also the indicators of structure, density and intensity were used, as well as the Pearson correlation coefficient. The study found that in 2015 about 51,5% of plant biomass in agriculture produced in the EU were by-products - derived from crop residues, fodder crops and grazed biomass. The production of plant biomass was characterized by considerable spatial differentiation both in relation to biomass derived from arable crops (the leaders in this respect were: France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland) as well as to other biomass (Germany, France, Poland, Great Britain and Italy had the largest share). In 2015, nearly ¾ of the plant biomass produced in the EU was produced in seven countries (i.e. Germany, France, Poland, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and Romania). The analysis also included the dependences among the size of biomass production, the population potential of the country (measured by the share in the EU population) and the production potential of agriculture (measured in the share of agricultural land in the EU). This allowed the designation of four groups of countries. |

Abstrakt | It is determined that in economic science there is no single approach to the interpretation of the concept of ‘innovation’. It is suggested that taking into account the radical changes that are in the world economy today it is necessary to use the extended concept of innovation, which should be understood as the results of the development transformation, research, ideas and their combination into a radically new or improved technological, economic, social solution, the results of which can be applied in practice. The main indicators that determine the level of innovation development of a country or region and provide an opportunity to determine the impact on economic development are covered. The place of Ukraine in such ratings according to indicators of innovative development in 2017, 2018 and problems that cause their low level are defined. The improvement directions of the innovative development level of the country are defined and the real steps taken by the government of the country to correct the negative trends through the introduction of digital transformation of the country’s economy, the transition from raw material to high-tech production and the basis of innovative IT technologies and communications are shown. |

Wicki L. Changes in land use for production of energy crops in Poland

Title | Zmiany powierzchni produkcji roślin energetycznych w Polsce |
Słowa kluczowe | bioenergia, bioetanol, biodiesel, biogaz, konkurencja żywność – energia |
Key words | bioenergy, bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas, food–energy competition |
Produkcja bioenergii w oparciu o surowce pochodzenia rolniczego silnie wzrastała w analizowanym okresie, z 5 TJ w 2005 roku to 42 TJ w 2016 roku. Udział powierzchni gruntów ornych przeznaczanych do produkcji surowców do wytwarzania biopaliw wynosił 5,6% w 2016 roku. |
Abstract | The goal of the article is to evaluate whether production of modern biofuels in Poland competes with food production. CSO and AMA data have been used in the analysis. The data in question refers to the area of arable land in Poland, yields and livestock as well as renewable energy production structure and quantity and production of biodiesel, bioethanol and agricultural biogas. Data concerning quantity of raw materials used for production of the agricultural biogas have been accessed from AMA . Data for 2005-2016 have been collected. Production of bioenergy based on agricultural raw materials has significantly increased. From 2005 to 2016, it increased from 5 to 42 TJ . Approximately 92% of bioenergy from agricultural sources are bioethanol and biodiesel produced from the first generation of raw materials, the production of which is in direct competition with food production. The share of biogas was 8% only. Waste constituted 75% in the raw materials used to produce biogas. The area of production of energy crops has reached 5.6% of arable land in 2016 from 1.5% in 2005. It means that in Poland production of bioenergy from agricultural sources competes with food and feed production and its further increase is not desirable. Actions focused on the increased use of the second generation raw materials for energy production and decreased use of food raw materials should be taken. |

Title | State and Prospects for the Development of the Biogas Market in the EU and Poland – Economic Approach |
Słowa kluczowe | biogaz, biogazownie, energia odnawialna |
Key words | biogas, biogas plants, renewable energy |
Abstract | The agricultural biogas market differs in different European countries. Both in Europe and in Poland, the basic form is the use of biogas to generate electricity and heat. In nine EU countries, the biogas produced is also used in local gas networks and in transport, especially communal. Biogas production can be based on agricultural raw materials (Germany) or the use and processing of all agricultural, industrial and municipal waste (Denmark, Sweden). The aim of this article is to present dynamics and structure of biogas market development, raw materials used and profitability in various legal and financial models. The presented analyzes have concluded that biogas plants could be an important part of the energy market in the future, particularly at the local level and an important part of a sustainable economy. |
