Title | Changes on the Pork Meat Market in Poland in the years 2001 2017 |
Słowa kluczowe | pogłowie trzody, produkcja wieprzowiny, eksport, import, ceny |
Key words | pig population, pork production, exports, imports, price |
Abstrakt | Przedstawiono zmiany w podaży wieprzowiny w Polsce w latach 2001-2017. Pogłowie trzody chlewnej charakteryzowało się tendencją spadkową we wszystkich grupach zwierząt. W latach 2001-2007 import żywca wzrastał rocznie o 71 tys. szt., a w latach 2008-2017 o 603,5 tys. szt. W średnim okresie tempo wzrostu cen w UE i w Polsce będzie niewielkie (0,8% rocznie), a Polska pozostanie nadal znacznym importerem żywych świń. |
Abstract | Changes in pork supply in Poland in the years 2001-2017 were presented. The pig population was characterized by a downward trend in all groups of animals. In the years 2001-2007, livestock imports grew annually by 71 thousand pcs, and in the years 2008-2017 by 603.5 thousand pcs. The increasing scale of livestock import slowed the decline in meat production. Livestock export was characterized by high variability and was small. Meat imports were characterized by a growing scale and pace (almost 32% per annum in 2001-2008 and 3.1% in 2009-2017). Meat exports grew, and the growth rate since 2009 exceeded the scale of import growth, which improved the negative balance of meat trade. Exports of pork products were characterized by a rapid upward trend, and small imports. Pork prices in Poland "followed" average prices in EU countries. In the medium term, the growth rate of prices in the EU and in Poland will be small (0.8% per year). In the medium term Poland will remain a significant livestock importer. |

Title | The Wood Pellet Sector: Barriers to Growth and Opinions of Manufacturers in Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Key words | renewable energy, wood pellet stoves, raw material, imports, quality, rural household |
Abstrakt | Biomass is a major source of renewable energy in the EU and Poland, stimulating the growth of the wood pellet sector. Wood pellet demand is stimulated by a complex interaction of market forces and policies including EU climate, energy, and environmental regulations, Poland’s program to improve air quality, and subsidies for the replacement of inefficient stoves used by households. This article focuses on the growth of the wood pellet industry, imports and exports in Poland, and wood pellet quality and use by households. The main issues faced by the EU wood pellet sector between 2013 and 2016 are further considered in the context of opinions of Polish wood pellet manufacturers. Industry opinions were collected in response to an open-ended question that probed for the main issues faced by wood pellet producers during the survey implemented by the authors in 2019. Respondents identified difficulties in obtaining raw material for pellet production and poor pellet quality as major problems. Although the majority did not feel concerned about competition from imported wood pellets, a small number of respondents viewed such competition as a problem reflecting the reversal of decreasing imports in 2017. Overall, the domestic wood pellet industry can be expected to grow because of increasing pressure to expand the use of renewable energy and will be driven by the household sector switching to more efficient, wood burning stoves. Additionally, the expanding area of private Polish forests may become a source of much-needed raw material for wood pellet manufacturing. |

Title | Changeability of World Food Prices During 2000-2018 |
Słowa kluczowe | żywność, ceny żywności, indeksy cen, niestabilność cen, rynek światowy |
Key words | food, food prices, price indices, instability of prices, global market |
Abstract | The aim of the paper is to present the main direction of change in global prices of farm and food products during 2000-2018, determination of the level of change and indication of the reasons for these phenomena. The main source for the data was average annual indices of food prices from the FAO. The analyses showed that in 2011 global food prices reached a level over two and a half times higher than in 2000, but during the period under investigation they increased by 85%. The greatest increase was in the price of vegetable oils due to the development of biofuels. The largest fluctuations in prices were noted in the sugar and dairy markets, and the smallest in the meat market. It was concluded that during longer periods demand had the greatest influence on global food prices, while during shorter periods it was drastic changes in supply. |

Key words | European Union, oilseeds, vegetable oils, oilmeals, production, consumption, trade |
Abstrakt | W artykule przedstawiono ocenę zmian jakie nastąpiły w produkcji, zużyciu i handlu nasionami oleistymi i produktami ich przerobu w Unii Europejskiej w latach 2000-2013. |
Abstract | The article presents an assessment of changes that have occurred in the production, consumption and trade of oilseeds and their processing products in the European Union in the years 2000-2013. The analysis of changes was carried out for 28 EU countries, including the division into old and new Member States, based on available data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAOSTAT). Since the beginning of the 21st century, the production and consumption of oilseeds in the European Union has been dynamically increasing following the rapidly growing demand for vegetable oils in the industrial sector (in biofuel production), with small changes in the food sector and rapidly growing demand for oilmeals in the feed sector, due to the development of livestock production (mainly poultry production) and a change in animal feeding technology. Despite the dynamic development of oilseed production and processing (faster in the new Member States than the old), the European Union has low self-sufficiency in the field of oil products and remains a permanent importer of oilseeds (including especially oilmeals). |

Abstrakt | Information and communication technologies (ICT) are becoming more accessible and more widely used indifferent areas of socio-economic activity and in various territories, including rural areas. There is a noticeableincrease in the interest of rural residents in modern technologies, especially those supporting communication. At the same time, it should be noted that despite the small level of ICT skills and competences, ruralareas have great potential that can be expressed in: human resources, the natural environment biodiversity, and raw materials. Therefore, rural areas in Europe should be similar in terms of the use of ICT and shouldnot differ from the level observed in urban areas. The article presents the use of the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process) for multicriteria decision analysisof the use of ICT by natural persons living in rural areas of the European Union (EU), in 2018. The empiricalmaterial used in the research came from the resources of the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). The result of the survey is the ranking of 27 EU countries (Great Britain was omitted). The obtained resultsshowed large disproportions in the use of ICT in rural areas between the countries of the European Union. In the extreme case, between Denmark being the leader of the ranking and Bulgaria, which was in the 27thplace, this differences amounted to 70.7%. |

Abstrakt | As a result of concerns about the long-term sustainability of globalized retail trade and the stronger presence of health conscious consumer behaviour, governments and groups of conscious consumers worldwide are increasingly focusing on the promotion and development of local food systems and small-scale retail chains and the production of quality local food products to promote the market. In our paper, we would like to give an overview of community-led alternative types of local food systems, with particular attention to shopping community-type consumer and consumer communities. We also describe the main results of our primary research in the population and the shopping community. During the questionnaire we revealed general consumer behaviour and the demand and attitude of local food, the popularity of the customer communities in the settlement of the respondents. In the survey conducted among members of the consumer community, we looked at the analytical areas designated as a target in the population questionnaire for the purpose of comparability and our aim was to explore the sociometrics and lifestyles of communities as well as their community experiences and possible developments. Our hypothesis is that there is a close correlation between the respondents with higher education and income and the preferences of local food. Furthermore, it is assumed that there is a significant difference between the food consumption behaviors of the two samples examined. |

Słowa kluczowe | adoption spell, Weibull, static, potato varieties, Ethiopia |
Key words | adoption spell, Weibull, static, potato varieties, Ethiopia |
Abstrakt | Potato is mainly tagged as a food security crop in Ethiopia. However, its productivity remains low due to low adoption of improved technologies by smallholder farmers. Duration models, namely, Parametric (Weibull) and Non-parametric (Kaplan Meier) were used to analyze the data gathered from 365 sample farmers. The Non-parametric result revealed that the average duration that potato growers should wait before adopting a new variety is about 3.5 years. The Weibull regression indicated that timely availability of seed, access to labor and irrigation water, land size, and adaptation strategy by farmers are found to be factors curtailing the timeframe to adopt improved potato varieties. The regression analysis revealed that costs of inputs such as manure and compost, environmental and market factors such as drought, pest and disease outbreaks, price variability of potato seed, and quality of potato seed were found to be factors influencing adoption decisions of improved potato varieties by smallholder farmers. |

Abstrakt | Studies on the economics of agricultural production in organic farms are carried out on a small scale but deliver important information about the situation of organic agricultural producers. The aim of this paper is to examine the economic and production results of organic farms cultivating winter wheat and winter rye in relation to the results of conventional farms (by way of case study). The paper used actual accounting data collected in the Agrokoszty system and Polish FADN and direct interviews with organic farmers. For detailed comparison of the economic results the methodology of calculating gross margin was used. When compared to conventional farms, the winter wheat and winter rye production results were weaker in organic farms, and a lower yield of grain was demonstrated. The selling price of organic grain was more favourable only for winter wheat. The surveyed farmers indicate the will to continue organic production. However, it is necessary to develop the organic product market and for further financial support for this production sector. |

Abstrakt | The article discusses the shortcomings of tax policy in the agrarian sector of the economy of Ukraine, whichhas created non-competitive conditions for small farms. Large agricultural enterprises in Ukraine use theexisting special tax regime as an optimization of tax liabilities. This has led to such negative economic, social and environmental consequences as the development of landlands, the deterioration of agriculturallandscapes, the increase in export-oriented production, the growth of unemployment in the village and themigration of the rural population. While small farms, without state support, provide the population with basicfoodstuffs. The purpose of the article is evidence of the use of a special tax regime only for small farms, basedon an analysis of the special tax treatment regime in Polish agriculture and an analysis of the differential rentmethodology laid down in the basis of a special tax regime, as well as the development of practical recommendationsfor Ukraine. |

Słowa kluczowe | marketing, agroturystyka, Wielkopolska, promocja, przedsiębiorczość |
Key words | agritourism, marketing, Wielkopolska region, costs, financing possibilities |
Abstract | Agritourism is one of the most popular forms of rural tourism. The Wielkopolskie region is a valued and well known agritourism region of Poland. Natural conditions, rich tradition and culture as well as folk customs functioning in this area make the provision of agritourism services popular among farm owners. In order to be competitive on the market, hosts use modern technologies to promote their products and services. The application of marketing activities while running agritourism farms is a very important subject, as it proves, first of all, the entrepreneurship of the owners and, secondly, it is an excellent promotion of the farm or the region. The aim of this article is to indicate the possibility of financing marketing activities and costs incurred by the owners of agritourism farms due to the marketing tools used. The article attempts to present the financing of marketing activities in agritourism and the costs incurred by the owner of the used marketing tools in Poland. The research was carried out among agritourism farms located in the Wielkopolskie region. On the basis of the conducted research it can be stated that the farms use marketing tools, however, the owners declare that they allocate a small amount of money to this type of activity. |

Abstract | Regions specialized in the organic milk production in Poland represent a small share in the total production of this raw material within the country. Measurement of concentration is one of the key issues in research on the economic structures of market phenomena. The aim of the work was to examine the degree of concentration of the organic milk market in the context of the total milk market, as well as an attempt to answer the question about the possibility of indicating regions specializing in the production of organic milk. The study was carried out using the classical Herfindahl-Hirschman index. A modified version of the formula of the zero unitarization method was also used. The obtained results indicate a moderate degree of concentration of the organic milk market. At the same time, using the modified zero unitarization method, it is possible to clearly identify regions in which the production of organic milk has more economic significance. |

Kisielińska J. Dochody z gospodarstwa rolnego a wynagrodzenia z pracy najemnej w krajach UE

Title | Income from the Farm and Remuneration in EU Countries |
Słowa kluczowe | dochody z towarowych gospodarstw rolnych, wynagrodzenia z pracy najemnej |
Key words | income from commercial farms, remuneration |
Abstrakt | Celem badań przedstawionych w artykule było porównanie dochodów z towarowych gospodarstw rolnych z wynagrodzeniami uzyskiwanymi z pracy najemnej w krajach UE. Porównywano średnie dochody w ogóle gospodarstw oraz średnie w klasach ekonomicznych (klasyfikacja KS6). W 12 państwach UE średnie dochody z gospodarstw były wyższe niż wynagrodzenia, w 15 zaś niższe. Konsekwencją wzrostu klasy ekonomicznej jest zwykle wzrost średnich dochodów rolniczych. Aby uzyskać z gospodarstwa wyższe dochody niż wynagrodzenia z pracy najemnej, należy być właścicielem najsilniejszych ekonomicznie gospodarstw w krajach Europy zachodniej a następnie południowej, najmniejsze zaś w krajach postkomunistycznych. Wśród nowych członków UE zachowanie parytetu dochodowego w rolnictwie jest więc łatwiejsze niż wśród starych członków. |
Abstract | The aim of the research presented in the article was to compare the income from commercial farms with national averages for wages in EU countries. Average income in farms and national averages by economic classes (KS6 classification) were compared. In 12 EU countries, the average income from farms was higher than national wage averages, and in 15 countries it was lower. An increase in average agricultural income is usually a result of a general increase in the economic class. The economically strongest farms, with incomes that are higher than national average wages, are those that are owned first in Western, and then in Southern, EU countries, with the smallest numbers found in post-Communist countries. Among new EU members, however, the preservation of income parity in agriculture is easier than in the case of old members. |

Title | Spatial Diversification of the Use of Funds for Farm Modernization From the Rural Development Program |
Słowa kluczowe | PROW, inwestycje, rozwój rolnictwa, dobra publiczne |
Key words | RDP, investment, agriculture development, public goods |
Wykorzystano dane ARiMR, GUS i Eurostat. Do oceny zmian zróżnicowania przestrzennego użyto wskaźnik autokorelacji przestrzennej Morana (Ig). |
Abstract | The aim of the study is to determine changes in utilization of spatial diversity for the modernization of farms in Poland under the Rural Development Program for 2007–2013 and 2014–2020. The analysis covered the period 2007–2018. The analysis was conducted on the basis of data obtained from ARMA, GUS and Eurostat. Moran spatial autocorrelation index (Ig) was used to assess changes in spatial diversity. It was found that within the RDP 2014–2020 there were changes in the spatial distribution of the use of subsidies to support investments in agricultural holdings. It was observed that there was an increase in the intensity of use of subsidies for investments in voivodships in which large farms prevailed, and limiting the activity in using this measure in voivodships with fragmented agriculture. This may mean that small farms do not generate sufficient surplus needed to co-finance development investments. Support for investment for modernization of farms under the RDPs can be used primarily by economically large farms. Small farms do not have sufficient funds to co-finance development investments. |

Key words | |
Abstrakt | The objective of the study is to present opportunities and barriers concerning the development of regional bean production with geographical indication and designation of origin, in Poland, in 2012-2017. The specificity, scale and conditions of production of three Polish regional bean species are described including the background of changes in the area cultivated with bean, its yield, production and development of buying-in prices. Attention is drawn to objective and subjective factors slowing down the certification process of leguminous crop production in accordance with producer specification. Information from the following databases has been used in the study: FAOSTAT, Eurostat, GUS (Central Statistical Office), JIHARS (Agricultural and Food Quality Inspection), as well as the following associations of regional bean producers (Association of Climbing Bean ‘Piękny Jaś’ Producers in Wrzawy, Association of Bean Producers in Nowy Korczyn, Cooperative ‘Dolina Dunajca’ and LAG (Local Action Group) ‘Biała-Dunajec’). The niche character and small previous production volume mean that regional beans PDO and PGI are only available in season for a small group of consumers. Little interest from producers of production certification makes it difficult to recognize that this pro-development activity is rather amateur at the current stage of building the regional food market in Poland. |

Słowa kluczowe | turystyka, eksport towarowy, pomoc rozwojowa, przekazy, Globalne Południe |
Key words | tourism, merchandise export, aid development, remittances, Global South |
Abstrakt | Przedmiotem artykułu jest identyfikacja i ocena zależności pomiędzy wpływami z turystyki, eksportu towarowego, pomocy rozwojowej i przekazów w 83 państwach Globalnego Południa. Zależność pomiędzy czterema zmiennymi stanowiła punkt wyjścia do zbadania i oceny związku pomiędzy nimi a obecnym poziomem rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego w analizowanych państwach Południa. |
Abstract | The subject of the article is the identification and assessment of the relationship between tourism, commodity exports, development aid and remittances in the 83 countries of the Global South. These countries have been grouped due to geographical features that significantly inhibit socio-economic development: 1) small islanders developing, and 2) countries without access to the sea (inland). These countries have been identified for the purposes of the article as countries with a geographical disadvantage. In addition, a group of the least developed countries was distinguished. The relationship between the four variables was the starting point, then the relation between these variables and the current level of socio-economic development in the analyzed countries of the South was examined and assessed. The study used characteristics for four variables in particular groups of countries, such as: mean, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, skewness, minimum and maximum. The correlation coefficient r-Spearman was used to identify relationships between variables. The survey indicated that in all the analyzed countries, on the basis of the results obtained, a strong positive correlation could be noticed between tourism and commodity exports. In those countries that developed tourism specialization intensively (export of tourist product), this translated into breaking economic stagnation and accelerating development processes. |

Abstrakt | Transport is a very important branch of the economy. It was quite well recognized in the case of industry services, however, there have been few studies on transport services provided in the agribusiness sector. This gap was filled by employees of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at WULS-SGGW. The subjects of interest were entities dealing in food processing. The study reviewed research and publications of the Faculty’s employees that were created in the 21st century. The majority of enterprises did not have a separate department dealing with transport. Apart from own transportation, small and micro enterprises also combined their own and external transport means. Forwarding services were used to a small extent in the shipping process organisation. The results of the research at WULS-SGGW and other studies were quite similar. |

Abstrakt | The development by means of cooperation, an exchange of knowledge and education is of crucial importance in the contemporary knowledge-based economy. The goal of the study was to determine important goals in cooperation with regard to the scope of knowledge and education of agricultural holdings maintaining conservative breed animals in the region of fragmented agriculture (South-Eastern Poland). The studied entities contribute to an increased biodiversity and maintenance of small agricultural holdings. The conditions of cooperation basing on an exchange of knowledge and education are laid down based on the results of a questionnaire study conducted among 145 agricultural holdings and principal component analyses (PCA). The evaluation of the exchange of knowledge and education varied within the industry. The highest degree of approval for the exchange of knowledge and education was among breeders of pigs and cows, the lowest among sheep breeders. It was demonstrated that participation in fairs and trainings improved the evaluation of analysed cooperation. |

Abstrakt | The European authorities pay particular attention to agriculture and employees in this sector. Women represent more than 33% of this group in the European Union. A significant number of actions are targeted at women from rural areas, having regard to the mentioned issues and specific situation of women in the labour market. Therefore, it requires in-depth analyses. The main aim of the presented study is to assess the diversity of the situation of women working in agriculture across the EU. The quantitative analysis allows to indicate similarities and differences among EU states in the current structure of women’s employment in this sector. In the analysis, the k-mean method is applied with the Labour Force Survey data from the year 2016. The study refers to 28 EU states and a group of women aged 20–64. The obtained results indicated that we have a large proportion of self-employees in agriculture. However, we observe a larger percentage of those who create jobs for others states that are better economically developed. This analysis confirms the findings that the Polish structure of female employment is closer to those in the Mediterranean countries. Poland is assigned to one cluster with Greece. This group is distinguished by several factors. Firstly, it contains a high proportion of people employed in agriculture with a relatively small share of part-timers. Secondly, it is a very high rate of self-employed with a very low proportion of those who create jobs for others. |
