Title | Environmental Assessment of the Life Cycle of Bovine Compound Feeds from a Feed Milling Plant in a Large Commercial Farm in Wielkopolska Region, Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | environment, life cycle analysis, impact category indicator, compound feed, feed mill, Poland |
Key words | environment, life cycle analysis, impact category indicator, compound feed, feed mill, Poland |
Abstrakt | In recent years, the importance of environmental threats associated with intensive livestock production has been emphasized. Compound feeds make up a part of the animal production chain. A complete assessment of the animal production system with regard to environmental criteria is therefore impossible without considering the environmental consequences of feed production. The goal of this research is to fill the gap in an environmental assessment of production processes of compound feeds in Poland. The study presents an assessment of production impacts of bovine compound feeds according to Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology. The data for analysis were based on the set of information obtained from the feed milling plant located in a commercial agricultural enterprise in the Wielkopolska region in the years 2015-2016. An inventory table of inputs was prepared in relation to the functional unit of 1 ton of compound feeds and two phases of production processes, i.e. upstream and core. For average compound feed, the impact category indicators for the global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical ozone formation, consumption of mineral resources, fossil fuel resources and the emission of the respirable particles were respectively: 605.9 kg CO2 eq, 8.73 kg SO2 eq, 3.32 kg PO4 eq, 0.73 kg ethylene eq, 3.4x10-3 kg antimony eq, 5141.1 MJ and 2.25 kg PM2.5 eq. The upstream phase had the greatest effect on investigated impacts, while the core processes phase had a relatively low impact on environmental threats. It is recommended to broaden the scope of the research for a larger group of feed milling plants with more complex manufacturing processes, with a more branched supply structure and a wide range of compound feeds for different animal types. The obtained data can be a valuable source base in prospective analyses of the life cycle of various animal products in Poland. |

Słowa kluczowe | ASF – afrykański pomór świń, rynek mięsa wieprzowego, eksport, Polska |
Key words | ASF – African swine fever, pork market, exports, Poland |
Abstrakt | Celem badania jest ocena oddziaływania wirusa afrykańskiego pomoru świń ASF (African Swine Fever) na rozwój i funkcjonowanie rynku mięsa wieprzowego w Polsce. Wirus ten pojawił się w Polsce w lutym 2014 roku u dzików, a następnie w lipcu 2014 roku u świń. Badanie obejmuje lata 2014-2018, czyli okres występowania wirusa ASF w Polsce. Do badania zastosowano metodę opisową i proste analizy statystyczne. |
Abstract | The aim of the study is to assess the impact of African swine fever virus (ASF) on the development and functioning of the pork market in Poland. This virus appeared in Poland in February 2014 in wild boars, and then in July 2014 in pigs. The study covers the years 2014-2018, the period of ASF virus in Poland. By the end of July 2018, there were 182 cases of ASF in pigs and over 2.6 thousand in wild boars in four provinces of eastern and central Poland, and the largest cluster of this disease is located in the Lublin province. The appearance of ASF virus has had a negative impact on the pork market in Poland, resulting in restrictions on the export of this meat, costs of eradication of outbreaks and biosecurity. Despite these difficulties, the production of pork at this time was characterized by an upward trend, while exports only in the first year of the ASF decreased, but in subsequent years, due to the diversification of markets, there was an increase in exports. The descriptive method and simple statistical analyzes were used for the study. |

Key words | insurance risk, crop insurance, agricultural insurance, inn |
Pozwala bowiem o wiele szybciej i z większą precyzją planować wydatki ze środków publicznych w przypadku wystąpienia negatywnych skutków anomalii pogodowych. |
Abstract | Every year in Polish agriculture there are losses caused by adverse weather phenomena. Estimating the amount of damage by traditional methods is too time-consuming; it can take up to several months, which makes it difficult to pay compensation and reduces confidence in the national insurance system. The article proposes a modern monitoring method that allows shortening this period to several days, while increasing the quality and accuracy of the data. The proposed solution is fully feasible and has economic justification. It allows for much faster and more precise planning of public spending in case of negative effects of weather anomalies. |

Słowa kluczowe | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
Key words | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
Abstrakt | Animal production is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the major challenges in sustainable management is to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing GHG emissions. The diversity of animal production systems and accompanying diversification of technological processes, mean that specific production effects can be obtained at different levels of GHG emissions. The aim of the study was to determine the carbon footprint (CF) of beef cattle grown in a conventional system (i.e. indoor confinement). The research was carried out on the beef cattle farm belonging to a large-area enterprise, Długie Stare Ltd. The beef cattle production system consisted of the following subsystems: a basic breeding herd (consisting of suckler cows, replacement heifers and calves up to 6.5 months), breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls. The method of life cycle analysis (LCA) in the stages from "cradle-to-farmgate" was used to assess the GHG emissions associated with the production of beef cattle. The average CF in the entire beef cattle production system was 25.43 kg of CO2 kg-1 of live weight of marketed cattle, while in the individual subsystems of basic breeding herd, breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls, the CF (after GHG allocation) was: 11.0 kg CO2 eq., 34.30 kg CO2 eq., 27.32 and 25.40 kg CO2 eq., respectively. GHG emissions associated with young calves staying in the cow-calf pairs until weaning (in the period from 0-6.5 months), had a decisive influence on the final CF in each of the subsystems of beef cattle production. The second important factor directly affecting the CF was GHG emissions related to methane (CH4) enteric fermentation and manure management. Knowledge of factors affecting the CF structure allows better identification of critical areas in production processes with high GHG emission potential. Information on the CF of beef cattle and beef meat responds to a wider societal demand for the ecological characteristics of market products, which ultimately contributes to improving their market competitiveness. |

Słowa kluczowe | gleba, węgiel organiczny, sekwestracja, gazy cieplarniane |
Key words | soil, organic carbon, sequestration, greenhouse gases |
Zastosowanie systemów uprawy w pożądanej proporcji w stosunku do areału gruntów ornych w Polsce mogłoby pozwolić na średnie pochłanianie gazów cieplarnianych rzędu 0,556 t CO2 ekw.∙ha 1∙r-1. |
Abstract | The aim of the work was simulations of soil organic carbon balances as well as absorption and emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) to characterize the mitigation potential of climate change in agricultural use of arable land. Simulations were performed using the DNDC model for voivodships and Poland using a twenty-year series of meteorological data. It was found that the plow cultivation system with the harvest residue (a) will cause in Poland a net emission of these gases amounting to 0.203 t CO2 eq∙ha-1∙y-1. On the other hand, the reduced tillage system leaving crop residues on the field (b) and the tillage system with the regular application of manure and harvest residues (c) will absorb CO2 in amounts: 1.225 and 0.172 t CO2 eq∙ha-1∙y-1 respectively. The obtained results suggest that in the medium-term (20 years) the studied cultivation systems may be recognized as practices mitigating climate change. The use of cultivation systems in the desired proportion in relation to the area of arable land in Poland could give an average greenhouse gas absorption of 0.556 t CO2 eq∙ha 1∙y 1. |

Title | Modeling of Emission of Nitrous Oxide and Ammonia on a Regional Scale and in Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | azot, bilans, emisja, podtlenek azotu, amoniak |
Key words | nitrogen, balance, emission, nitrous oxide, ammonia |
Abstract | The aim of the research was to verify the N2O direct and NH3 emission factors adopted in national inventories, and to estimate the direct and indirect N2O emissions in cultivation systems increasing carbon sequestration. Simulations were performed using the DNDC model for NUTS2 and Poland with the use of twenty-year series of meteorological data. It was found that the simulated direct emission of nitrous oxide for Poland was in line with the adopted emission factor. The simulated ammonia emission was greater than the assumed emission factor. Use in simulations of cultivation systems increasing the sequestration of organic carbon, such as conservation system and conventional system with manure fertilization, increased: surface leaching and runoff of nitrogen as well as direct and indirect N2O emission. The increase of these emissions must be compensated with an allowance increase in the amount of sequestered organic carbon in the soil if the greenhouse gas emissions balance is to be negative. |
