Title | Geographical Indications and Traditional Specialities: Case Study of Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | geographical indications, traditional and regional products, intellectual property, visual communication |
Key words | geographical indications, traditional and regional products, intellectual property, visual communication |
Abstrakt | The contemporary development of rural areas requires verified agricultural production and support for manufacturing of traditional and regional high-quality products. The aim of the research described in this article has been to assess customer awareness of these products and to identify the features attributed to them in view of existing legal regulations. A catalogue of currently binding regulations has been established, taking account of their axiological assumptions, and results of a survey have been analysed. An assessment of the law functioning in this area has allowed the conclusion that a simplification of the existing regulations and procedures is needed. This is the precondition for the axiological assumptions of the said regulations to be fulfilled. The weight of the discussed subject has been proven by the results of the conducted survey: 93% of the respondents declared buying the described products. The quality of the products, as well as the respondents’ pride in the indigenous culinary tradition, were the main reason for their choice (54%). Examining the laws in the discussed area requires adoption of an interdisciplinary axiological perspective. |

Jakubowska D., Wierzejski T. Ocena koncentracji produkcji żywności regionalnej i tradycyjnej w Polsce i krajach Unii Europejskiej
Autor | Dominika Jakubowska, Tomasz Wierzejski |
Tytuł | Ocena koncentracji produkcji żywności regionalnej i tradycyjnej w Polsce i krajach Unii Europejskiej |
Title | Evaluation of Market Concentration of Regional and Traditional Food Production in Poland and European Union Countries |
Słowa kluczowe | systemy ochrony jakości, oznaczenia geograficzne, produkcja żywności, koncentracja rynku |
Key words | quality protection systems, geographical indications, food production, market concentration |
Opisano i przeanalizowano różne kategorie regionalnych i tradycyjnych produktów zarejestrowanych w Polsce jak i innych krajach UE wykorzystując indeks koncentracji Herfindahhl-Hirschman. Polska posiada niewielki udział w analizowanym rynku. W ujęciu regionalnym w Polsce odnotowano względnie wysoką koncentrację produkcji. Wyraźnie wyższą wartość wykazano dla koncentracji producentów tych produktów. |
Abstract | The purpose of the work was to assess the concentration of regional and traditional food production in the European Union (EU) with particular emphasis on Poland. The analysis was made on the basis of data from the European DOOR databases, E-BACCHUS, E-SPIRIT DRINKS and IJHARS data. Various categories of regional and traditional products registered in Poland and other EU countries were described and analyzed using the Herfindahhl-Hirschman concentration index. The results obtained showed that the concentration of regional and traditional food production in the EU is high, and the majority of registered geographical indications originate from the Mediterranean, which accounts for almost three quarters of all EU registrations. Poland has a small share in the analyzed market. In regional terms, Poland has a relatively high concentration of production. A clearly higher value was demonstrated for the concentration of producers of these products. |

Title | Regional products as a chance for Polish competitiveness improvement in the European Union |
Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | regional products, competitiveness, Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG), regional brands, European Union Common Market |
Abstrakt | |
Abstract | This article presents an assessment of the potential for introducing Polish regional products in the European Union’s Common Market. The main advantages of Polish regional product entry to this market are the low costs of labour, big land resources, favourable age structure of population, traditional methods of agricultural production, natural rural landscape, big biodiversity, cultural and historical wealth. The main obstacles are the Polish law system and the lack of experience among Polish producers. The author thinks that Poland may become an acknowledged producer of cheeses, meat and meat preserves, fruits and vegetables, grains and their preserves as well as beverages. |
