Abstrakt	Nowadays, marketable assets that determine the survival and development of enterprises are seen as the most important factors of development. This is particularly important in a highly saturated food market, where there is a strong need to find sources of constant competitive advantage. The purpose of the present article is to present the role and importance of marketable assets in stimulating the development of food industry companies. The paper begins with the presentation of the types of marketable assets and their role in building constant competitive advantage on the food market. In the second part the results of surveys conducted among enterprises of the food industry are presented; basing on these, the authors determine the companies’ priorities in the use of assets aiming at stimulating their development.

Abstrakt	Difficult economic situation in developing countries is a result of a number of factors. Among others, low level of technique and technology, lack of skilled labor force or poor infrastructure. It should be noted, that many of these countries are based on natural economy, with dominating employment in agriculture; consequently, there is very shallow market for industrial goods. Taking into account the role of agriculture in these countries, it is not only industrial development, but mainly agricultural development and modernization that are crucial for making their situation better. Processes of globalization and regional integration, currently observed in the world economy, are favorable conditions for this purpose. The intensification of international trade accompanying these trends strongly influences the level of benefits achieved and the position of each country in the international division of labor. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the developed countries preach the ideas of liberalization of world agricultural trade, in fact they protect the market.

Abstract	The measurement of poverty depends on the definition, way of understanding and method of identifying the poor. The purpose of this article is to present the impact on the incidence and intensity of poverty in selected monetary poverty lines. The analysis was based on the data from Polish household budgets study carried out by Central Statistical Office of Poland in 2010. The analysis showed that the highest risk of poverty was related to households living on unearned sources of income, households in rural areas and households where household head had at most lower secondary education level.

Abstract	The article indicated the role of vegetable production in Polish agriculture. They provide better use of the land, due to the higher its productivity. Polish farms were evaluated comparing to similar vegetable farms in Hungary, Germany and the Netherlands. It has been shown that Polish vegetable farms of the economic size between 40 and 100 ESU and above 100 ESU are competitive compared to farms in other countries and are able to develop. Dutch and German farms of similar economic size classes have limited development opportunities.

Abstract	This paper presents assessment of selected middle-sized meat plants, basing on a set of financial ratios. These were: ROA, ROE, ROS, current ratio, quick ratio, total debt ratio and debt structure. It was difficult to develop a clear and objective evaluation of meat plants based on such combination of indexes. Therefore these enterprises were also evaluated using the Hołda’s model. Basing on this model, the possibility of enterprise failure could be predicted. Among four evaluated meat plants, only one was close to be bankruptcy in the assessed period.

Abstract	The paper discusses the spatial distribution of rural communes in Mazovia region according to the tourism function index. The tourism function index consists of 8 variables, which characterize tourism development in three areas: tourist attendance, tourist infrastructure and tourist entrepreneurship. Further the natural breaks classification have been made in order to divide the communes into 4 categories. Finally, the statistical relation between tourism function index and some of the multifunctional development indicators have been analysed.

Abstract	An attempt was made to examine the investment activities of farmers in the context of changes in the area of farms. The study was conducted on 4 groups of farms covered by the FADN. The analysis led to the conclusion that farmers who increase the area of their farms were more active in their investments. Investment activity is necessary for the modernization of farms, enforced by the action of market globalization subjected to strong pressure and high demands of the EU common market.

Abstract	The quality of life is a problem of interdisciplinary character which can be examined including diverse aspects. Analysis of the objective quality of life of disabled people inhabited in country areas is an object of the present article’s interest. A measure of the objective quality of life of disabled people in the study are the housing conditions characterised through analysis of the usable area of households, number of rooms in the flat and the type of the house. The presented research material comes from research carried out as a part of the project co-financed by PFRON, concerning the determinants of the occupational activity of the disabled residing in rural areas. The primary data comes from examining a group of 5000 disabled persons from the whole Poland.

Abstrakt	In this paper the level of fulfillment of pro-environmental functions by agriculture of the Lublin region is identified and examined. The significance of that function in the concept of sustainable agriculture is emphasized. Agriculture in Lublin region is characterized by lower level of mineral fertilization comparing to the whole country. Over 40% of the farms use crop rotation on the whole sowing area as well as fallow lands (the 6th region in the rank). As far as Lublin region’s agriculture is concerned, ecological production becomes an important element of rural production, comparing to other regions. Certified organic farms in Lublin region make 10% of the total number of organic farms in Poland, however this region is second in the rank of the absolute number of organic farms.

Abstrakt	The process of modernization of agriculture under the Common Agricultural Policy has in view, among other things, the creation of economically stable and competitive farms. The aim of this paper is to verify the thesis that Poland’s membership in the European Union, implying a change in agricultural conditions, has resulted in diminishing the differences between farms. As a measure of diversification, confidence intervals for expected values were adopted. To assess the degree of differentiation in the farms’ development, the following criteria were applied: economic size of farms, net value added per a full-time employee, value of production, subsidies for operations. The number of farms over 16 ESU decreased, whilst the number of farms below the 8ESU increased. The research into farms, categorized by economic size, revealed increased diversity in terms of economic size and net value added per person. The production value showed decreased diversification of such agricultural activities as permanent crops and grain-fed animals.

Title	The Impact of Reductions in the Polish Fishing Fleet on the Volume of Catch of the Main Species of Fish

Abstrakt	Between 2003 and 2012, there was a reduction in the catch of the main species of fish. The main reason for this was the reduction of the fishing fleet. Additional factors, especially in the case of cod, included: inappropriate management of individual catch quotas, decrease in fishing profitability, and the obsolete, fragmented and non-modernized fishing fleet. An increase in the catch of the main species of fish, for which the resources actually allow, might result from improvements in the management of individual catch quotas, a closer cooperation between ship owners and the processing industry (with a view to increasing and stabilizing purchase prices) and modernization of the fishing fleet. Additionally, the catch quotas for cod could be used more efficiently if some of the herring-fishing units were redirected to fish for cod. This would additionally reduce the pressure on fishing for herring which has been a heavily exploited species in the recent years.
