| Title | Carbon Footprint of Beef Cattle in a Conventional Production System: a Case Study of a Large-Area Farming Enterprise in the Wielkopolska Region |
| Słowa kluczowe | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
| Key words | carbon footprint, beef production, emission of greenhouse gases, life cycle assessment, agriculture |
| Abstrakt | Animal production is a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. One of the major challenges in sustainable management is to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing GHG emissions. The diversity of animal production systems and accompanying diversification of technological processes, mean that specific production effects can be obtained at different levels of GHG emissions. The aim of the study was to determine the carbon footprint (CF) of beef cattle grown in a conventional system (i.e. indoor confinement). The research was carried out on the beef cattle farm belonging to a large-area enterprise, Długie Stare Ltd. The beef cattle production system consisted of the following subsystems: a basic breeding herd (consisting of suckler cows, replacement heifers and calves up to 6.5 months), breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls. The method of life cycle analysis (LCA) in the stages from "cradle-to-farmgate" was used to assess the GHG emissions associated with the production of beef cattle. The average CF in the entire beef cattle production system was 25.43 kg of CO2 kg-1 of live weight of marketed cattle, while in the individual subsystems of basic breeding herd, breeding heifers, breeding bulls and fattening bulls, the CF (after GHG allocation) was: 11.0 kg CO2 eq., 34.30 kg CO2 eq., 27.32 and 25.40 kg CO2 eq., respectively. GHG emissions associated with young calves staying in the cow-calf pairs until weaning (in the period from 0-6.5 months), had a decisive influence on the final CF in each of the subsystems of beef cattle production. The second important factor directly affecting the CF was GHG emissions related to methane (CH4) enteric fermentation and manure management. Knowledge of factors affecting the CF structure allows better identification of critical areas in production processes with high GHG emission potential. Information on the CF of beef cattle and beef meat responds to a wider societal demand for the ecological characteristics of market products, which ultimately contributes to improving their market competitiveness. |

| Abstract | In addition to providing extremely valuable products, bees are one of the species capable of pollinating entomophilic plants. Hence, supporting the development of beekeeping in the face of their importance to humanity seems to be extremely important. In Poland, this task is also carried out using funds from the European Union as part of the Bee Market Program Support Programs. The aim of the article is therefore to determine the role of funds originating from the European Union in the development of beekeeping in the Wielkopolskie voivodship on the example of the Provincial Union of Beekeepers in Poznań. First of all unpublished JPA data in Poznań, as well as the results of surveys were used for the research. The results of the research indicate a positive impact of EU funds on the development of beekeeping in the Wielkopolskie voivodship, especially due to the considerable interest in the mechanism among beekeepers. |

| Słowa kluczowe | zmiany organizacyjno-produkcyjne, produkcja rolnicza, oddziaływanie środowiskowe |
| Key words | organizational-production changes, agricultural production, environmental impact |
| Abstrakt | W pracy dokonano oceny zmian organizacyjnych i produkcyjności w polskim rolnictwie w kontekście wybranych oddziaływań środowiskowych, tj. salda bilansu azotu brutto. Dla wskazania zachodzących tendencji porównywano zmiany pomiędzy okresem lat 2002-2004 a latami 2014-2016. Badania wykazały, że mimo różnokierunkowych zmian m.in. powierzchni poszczególnych roślin uprawnych i pogłowia gatunków zwierząt inwentarskich, kształtowanych głównie przez uwarunkowania ekonomiczne, presja środowiskowa ze strony prowadzonej produkcji rolniczej w Polsce uległa zmniejszeniu. Nastąpiło to, w procesie intensyfikowania produkcji rolniczej przeciętnie w skali kraju. Zjawisko to świadczy o poprawie efektywności gospodarowania azotem w Polsce. |
| Abstract | The paper presents the assessment of organizational and productivity changes in Polish agriculture in the context of selected environmental impacts, i.e. the gross nitrogen balance. To indicate trends, changes between research from 2002-2004 and 2014-2016 were compared. Studies have shown that despite multi-directional changes in the area of particular crop plants and livestock husbandry animals, which have been shaped mainly by economic conditions, environmental pressure from agricultural production has decreased. This occurred despite the process of intensifying average agricultural production on a national scale. This phenomenon shows the improvement of nitrogen efficiency in Poland. |

| Słowa kluczowe | climate change, regional development, integrated development, process, water management |
| Key words | climate change, regional development, integrated development, process, water management |
| Abstrakt | Climate change adds extra stress on the current global situations and the regional development plans. Despite, Africa being rated the least among the continents contributing to the atmospheric pollution, it continues to be responsible for the least global emissions (estimated at 4%). Although they contributed to anthropogenic emission slightly, African continent is one of the highly vulnerable to impacts of long-term climate variability and extreme weather events, especially on the Nile. Moreover, developing countries are the most vulnerable to climate change impacts because they have fewer resources to adapt: socially, technologically and financially. Therefore, this paper is seeking to find and modify the regional development process in the frame of climate change along the Nile river. By considering some examples to accelerate the development process and methods in the Nile’s valley regions. Strongly related to the climate change impacts on different sectors and activities such agriculture, industry, energy, and the water supply and demand as well. |

| Title | SEWAGE DISCHARGE SYSTEMS IN RURAL AREAS, A CASE STUDY OF THE MUNICIPALITIES IN THE DISTRICT OF OLSZTYN |
| Słowa kluczowe | obszary wiejskie, systemy odprowadzania ścieków, przydomowe oczyszczalnie ścieków, kanalizacja, wodociągi |
| Key words | rural areas, wastewater management systems, home wastewater treatment plants, sewers, waterworks |
| Abstract | The purpose of the study was to evaluate, in a local approach, the state of supply of rural areas in a rural district with household wastewater management systems, with the focus on home wastewater treatment plants. The study covered the rural areas of the district of Olsztyn. The data, which were acquired from the Bank of Local Data, were processed through basic mathematical transformations and statistical measures. The structure and intensity indices were calculated per 1,000 residents. Large differences were found in the access to linear infrastructure and to individual systems of wastewater discharge. The results showed a constant increase in the number of home wastewater treatment plants and septic tanks due to the constant influx of people to villages lying around the town of Olsztyn. In contrast to studies conducted on a regional scale, no decrease in the number of septic tanks was observed correlated with the growing number of home wastewater treatment plants. A possible reason can be the specific environmental conditions and protection of inland waters, which limit possible locations of home wastewater treatment plants. |
