Abstrakt	The paper presents an analysis of changes in the structure of economic activity of the population in the older working age (50–64 years) in Poland, divided into three age groups. The study period covered the years 1993 to 2013. In addition to classical measures of structure, the synthetic measures of the intensity in structure transformation were used. They were described with the use of base value or year-over-year comparisons, an important complement to the traditional methods in this field. The study revealed little change in the structure of economic activity covered by the study in a dynamic, whereby the lowest stability was observed in the age group 55–59 years. In addition, during the period 2006–2013 an increase in the involvement of mature and older people in the labor market was observed.

Abstrakt	The paper presents the main aspects of rapeseed production and processing in Ukraine in the context of Ukraine’s joining EU. Current situation of rapeseed market and some aspects of exporting activity in this sphere were characterized. A set of possible directions of development of the situation in Ukraine including possible influences of UE’s policy in the sphere of alternative energy sources were presented, as well as changes of volumes of rape production. The paper also analyses the activity of Ukrainian government connected to the rapeseed production and processing, including avoidance of possible pathological Ukraine’s transformation into mere Europe’s raw materials’ supplier.

Abstrakt	The paper presents income situation of Polish rural households in 2005 –2012. The research material came from unpublished empirical studies of Central Statistical Office . Changes of income level and structure of main income sources of the livelihoods were presented. Growing importance of wage from off-farm jobs and a decline of the share of income from agriculture was observed. The author indicated differences in the economic situation of the population living in rural areas and of individual incomes of the families, which suggests the need of checking the activities of the regional policy in relation to rural areas. Conclusions from the analysis are confirmed by the answers of the respondents. According to them, “very good” and “good” levels of income in rural families (over 18% in 2012) came from all sources, including social benefits. Declining share of expenditures reflects positive trends in Polish rural areas after EU accession as well as possibilities of further structural and social changes in rural areas.

Title	Trends in the field of effective information and promotion activities in rural tourism

Abstrakt	The aim of the study was to present the changes in the number of lodgings in the years 1993–2013, trends related to forms of promotion used by rural tourism service providers, as well as information sources preferred by tourists resting in the countryside in the years 1997–2013. Additionally, the research covers the information and promotion methods used by service providers to meet the needs and expectations of customers. The data comes from empirical studies conducted both by the author and other authors from different academic centres in Poland, secondary data from the expert opinions provided by different institutions, and literature. The analysis shows that the forms of promotion used by the service providers were not fully adapted to the needs and expectations of tourists, both in 2003 and in 2012. Ten years ago, the most important source of information about holiday stay on a farm were the recommendations of relatives and friends, not promotional literature mostly used by service providers. Nowadays, the most important source of information about recreation in the countryside for surveyed tourists was the Internet, while the service providers’ great attention was given to the positive views expressed by satisfied guests resting in objects of rural tourism.

Abstrakt	With the entry into the European Union in 2004, Poland is obliged to observe the rules of the Common Agricultural Policy. One of the important areas of this policy is to preserve natural values of the countryside by supporting sustainable agriculture. Thanks to the financial support under the Rural Development Plan (2004–2007) and the Rural Development Programme (2007–2013), Polish farmers received the opportunity to use pro-environmental management methods. This study is devoted to characterizing the main tool to support environmental protection in rural areas of the RDP (2007–2013), namely agri-environmental program. Based on the survey, it was revealed that Poland was one of the countries that received the largest amount of funds for agri-environmental measures. It was also found out that the compensation due to changes in the intensity of production were the main impetus for pro-environmental action.

Title	Changes in agriculture of Podlaskie region after accession to the European Union

Abstrakt	The objective of this paper was to assess major changes within agricultural economic activities in Podlaskie region (NUTS 2) which occurred between 2002 and 2012. These economic changes in family farms (a dominant form of farming in Podlaskie) across the region were found to be substantial as a result of implementation of the funds offered by the European Union (EU) within Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Over this period the number of farms in the region decreased by 13%, average Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA) of commercial farms increased up to 11.38 ha, and livestock production increased substantially. Additionally, structure and intensity of non-agricultural activities in farm households both on- and off-farm improved. Livestock production predominated (approaching to 90%) within commercial agricultural production; dairy production was approximately 50% of total livestock production. It was proved that the EU funds implemented to Polish agriculture over 10 years, since 2004 until 2012, caused more diversification and multi-functionality and, through this, more sustainable economic activity in family farms across Podlaskie region.

Abstrakt	In the period 1990–2013 sugar industry in Poland faced numerous legal transformations, shifting from nearly free-market conditions into a strongly regulated sector. Changes of the sugar industry regulations had a significant impact on the structure of the sugar market, companies’ actions and, as a result, on their performance. Accession to the European Union and the reform of the sugar regime conducted from 2006 to 2010 on the initiative of the European Commission involved deep restructuring and modernization of the factories, which caused growth of their productivity. However, prices of sugar in the EU and in Poland are much higher than prices on the world market.

Abstrakt	Celem opracowania jest określenie poziomu i tempa zmian produktywności cząstkowej i całkowitej oraz próba identyfikacji czynników wzrostu produkcji w przemyśle spożywczym i jego branżach w Polsce w latach 2000-2011. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że w przemyśle spożywczym i jego branżach występowała tendencja wzrostowa produktywności pracy. Jednocześnie można było zaobserwować niekorzystne zmiany produktywności kapitału. Głównym źródłem wzrostu produkcji przemysłu spożywczego, a także rybnego, owocowo-warzywnego, zbożowo-młynarskiego, mleczarskiego oraz przedsiębiorstw produkujących napoje była substytucja pracy przez kapitał. Badania wskazały również na niewielki udział postępu techniczno-organizacyjnego we wzroście produkcji. Wkład tego czynnika był znaczący jedynie w przemyśle mięsnym oraz mleczarskim, czyli w branżach odznaczających się największym potencjałem konkurencyjnym.
Abstract	The aim of the study is to determine the level and pace of change of the single and total productivity and attempt to identify the factors of production growth in the food industry and its branches in Poland in the years 2000-2011. The study shows that in the food industry and its sectors, there was an upward trend in labor productivity. At the same time we have seen adverse changes in the productivity of capital. The main source of growth in food production, as well as fish, fruit and vegetables, grain and milling, dairy and beverage companies is the substitution of labor by capital. Studies also indicate a small share of technical and organizational progress in the growth of production. The contribution of this factor was significant only in the meat and dairy industries, that is, offering the greatest potential competitive.

Abstrakt	. Celem opracowania jest określenie zmian międzynarodowej konkurencyjności przemysłu spożywczego krajów Unii Europejskiej. Ranking konkurencyjności opracowano na podstawie wskaźnika syntetycznego, który składał się z następujących wskaźników cząstkowych: udział w rynku eksportowym, wskaźnik ujawnionych przewag komparatywnych, wskaźnik pokrycia importu eksportem oraz indeks Grubela-Lloyda. Obliczono średni poziom wymienionych wskaźników w latach 2000-2003 i 2009-2011 oraz ich zmianę w przyjętych szeregach czasowych. Przeprowadzone badania wskazują na proces poprawy konkurencyjności przemysłu spożywczego państw Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej, przy nieznacznym pogorszeniu konkurencyjności tej branży wśród niektórych małych krajów Europy Zachodniej. W rankingu konkurencyjności przemysłu spożywczego, niezależnie od przyjętego kryterium czasowego, dominują kraje takie jak: Holandia, Francja, Hiszpania, Dania i Niemcy. Polska, mimo poprawy wskaźnika syntetycznego w latach 2009-2011 w odniesieniu do wcześniejszego okresu, nie poprawiła pozycji (zajmowała odpowiednio 9. i 10. miejsce wśród krajów UE).
Abstract	The aim of the study was to determine the changes in the international competitiveness of the EU food industry. Competitiveness ranking was based on synthetic indicator, which consisted of the following sub-indicators: participation in the export market, the index of revealed comparative advantage, export-import coverage ratio and the Grubel-Lloyd index. The average levels of these indicators and their changes was calculated for years 2000-2003 and 2009-2011. The study indicates the improvement of the competitiveness of the food industry in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, with a slight deterioration in the competitiveness of the industry of some small countries in Western Europe. Ranking of the competitiveness of the food industry is dominated by countries like the Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark and Germany. Poland has improved level of the synthetic indicator in 2009-2011 compared to earlier period of analysis, but has not improved its position (occupied respectively 9 and 10 place among EU countries).

Abstrakt	W ostatnich latach możemy zaobserwować wzrost znaczenia produkcji ekologicznej na świecie. Do niedawna tendencja ta była obserwowana tylko w krajach wysoko rozwiniętych obecnie najwięcej gospodarstw ekologicznych jest w Afryce i Azji. Zmiany te mają swoje podłoże głównie we wzroście popytu na produkty ekologiczne oraz we wzrastającym poziomie edukacji dotyczącej ochrony środowiska oraz bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego. W poniższym opracowaniu przedstawiono stan rozwoju rolnictwa ekologicznego na świecie na podstawie danych z międzynarodowych organizacji ekologicznych. Przytoczono powierzchnię i ogólną strukturę użytków rolnych zagospodarowanych metodami ekologicznymi. Ponadto dokonano porównania ilości ekologicznych producentów rolnych na poszczególnych obszarach, a także krótko scharakteryzowano światowy rynek żywności ekologicznej.
Abstract	In recent years, we observe an increase in the importance of organic production in the world. Until recently, this trend was observed only in highly developed countries now many producers of organic food comes from Asia and Africa. These changes have their base mainly on the demand for organic products and the increasing level of education concerning environmental protection and food security. The following paper presents the state of development of organic farming in the world based on data from international environmental organizations. In the paper analyzes compare areas use for organic farming between continents and also analyzed the structure of the ecological land in the world. Moreover compared number of organic farmers in particular areas, as well as briefly characterized the global market for organic food.
