Social Protection in the European Union

Abstract
In 2005, expenditure on social protection accounted for 27.2% of GDP in the EU-27. However, the percentage share in one country can be more than double that in another. Expenditure was highest in Sweden (32.0%) and lowest in Latvia (12.4%). Expenditure on old-age and survivors benefits accounts for a large proportion of social benefits in most countries. Sickness/health care expenditure increased steadily over the period 2000–2005 in the EU-25 (by 3.4% per annum on average)
