Abstrakt	The paper presents income situation of Polish rural households in 2005 –2012. The research material came from unpublished empirical studies of Central Statistical Office . Changes of income level and structure of main income sources of the livelihoods were presented. Growing importance of wage from off-farm jobs and a decline of the share of income from agriculture was observed. The author indicated differences in the economic situation of the population living in rural areas and of individual incomes of the families, which suggests the need of checking the activities of the regional policy in relation to rural areas. Conclusions from the analysis are confirmed by the answers of the respondents. According to them, “very good” and “good” levels of income in rural families (over 18% in 2012) came from all sources, including social benefits. Declining share of expenditures reflects positive trends in Polish rural areas after EU accession as well as possibilities of further structural and social changes in rural areas.

Abstrakt	The paper presents selected issues concerning de minimis aid in agriculture in budget years 2014–2020. It analyses both a new Commission Regulation (EU) No 1408/2013 and Polish regulations. The paper presents not only general principles relating to granting de minimis aid but it also shows some specific conditions relating, inter alia, to help given while purchasing seed grain, to remission or division into instalments receivables of Agricultural Property Agency and to liming of agriculture soil. The article also mentions some economic data showing the maximum cumulative amount of de minimis aid in agriculture in particular European Union countries in 2007–2013 and 2014–2020. Finally, the paper highlights the diverse nature of the aid in question as the aid can be granted in the form of an administrative decision or a civil-law contract.

Abstrakt	Skillful creation of a region’s positive image as a non-material resource may contribute to the region development in long perspective. During this process it is very important to show the attributes of region identity. The author made an attempt to demonstrate the possibilities for the use of food market attributes in creation of region’s image. A survey was carried out in six typical regions (NUTS 2) in Poland and the results are presented in the paper. The main important food market attributes are: regional culinary heritage, regional products, prevalent production in region and regional diversity of food consumers behaviour.

Title	Trends in the field of effective information and promotion activities in rural tourism

Abstrakt	The aim of the study was to present the changes in the number of lodgings in the years 1993–2013, trends related to forms of promotion used by rural tourism service providers, as well as information sources preferred by tourists resting in the countryside in the years 1997–2013. Additionally, the research covers the information and promotion methods used by service providers to meet the needs and expectations of customers. The data comes from empirical studies conducted both by the author and other authors from different academic centres in Poland, secondary data from the expert opinions provided by different institutions, and literature. The analysis shows that the forms of promotion used by the service providers were not fully adapted to the needs and expectations of tourists, both in 2003 and in 2012. Ten years ago, the most important source of information about holiday stay on a farm were the recommendations of relatives and friends, not promotional literature mostly used by service providers. Nowadays, the most important source of information about recreation in the countryside for surveyed tourists was the Internet, while the service providers’ great attention was given to the positive views expressed by satisfied guests resting in objects of rural tourism.

Abstrakt	With the entry into the European Union in 2004, Poland is obliged to observe the rules of the Common Agricultural Policy. One of the important areas of this policy is to preserve natural values of the countryside by supporting sustainable agriculture. Thanks to the financial support under the Rural Development Plan (2004–2007) and the Rural Development Programme (2007–2013), Polish farmers received the opportunity to use pro-environmental management methods. This study is devoted to characterizing the main tool to support environmental protection in rural areas of the RDP (2007–2013), namely agri-environmental program. Based on the survey, it was revealed that Poland was one of the countries that received the largest amount of funds for agri-environmental measures. It was also found out that the compensation due to changes in the intensity of production were the main impetus for pro-environmental action.

Abstrakt	The study addresses the issue of investments related to wastewater management and water conservation in rural areas. The aim of the study was to assess the level of investment in the field of water and wastewater management in spatial terms. The scope of the research covered years 2005–2012. The data comes from the Central Statistical Office databases and publications, as well as available literature on the subject. It was revealed that expenditures on water supply and wastewater management in rural areas are covered mostly from environmental funds and funds from municipal budgets. In the case of sewage treatment plants and sewerage network, a significant share of the money came from EU funds.

Abstrakt	The purpose of this article is to assess the scale and nature of institutional support in the opinion of farmers engaged in organic farms in the Lublin region (NUTS 2). The following development was established on the basis of surveys conducted on a group of 30 producers of organic food from the Lublin region between the 4th and the 22nd of February 2013. The respondents were asked to assess the level of institutional support offered by the institutions to organic farmers. The highest in the rank were Agricultural Advisory Centres, certification bodies and the Agency for Restructuring and Modernisation of Agriculture (ARMA). On the other hand, Local Action Groups, District Offices, Chambers of Agriculture, ecological associations and clusters were ranked as the least helpful to the organic farmers. The farmers expected to receive both financial and non-financial support (marketing, sales promotion).

Title	Changes in agriculture of Podlaskie region after accession to the European Union

Abstrakt	The objective of this paper was to assess major changes within agricultural economic activities in Podlaskie region (NUTS 2) which occurred between 2002 and 2012. These economic changes in family farms (a dominant form of farming in Podlaskie) across the region were found to be substantial as a result of implementation of the funds offered by the European Union (EU) within Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Over this period the number of farms in the region decreased by 13%, average Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA) of commercial farms increased up to 11.38 ha, and livestock production increased substantially. Additionally, structure and intensity of non-agricultural activities in farm households both on- and off-farm improved. Livestock production predominated (approaching to 90%) within commercial agricultural production; dairy production was approximately 50% of total livestock production. It was proved that the EU funds implemented to Polish agriculture over 10 years, since 2004 until 2012, caused more diversification and multi-functionality and, through this, more sustainable economic activity in family farms across Podlaskie region.

Abstrakt	The way people organize their spare time, to a great extent, is the reflection of economic and cultural transformations of the society. It also applies to disabled people. It is not only a matter of how much free time people have, but also how they spend it, who helps them to organize it and with whom this free time is shared. In most societies disabled people constitute a group with the lowest level of activeness considering both their professional and their organization of leisure time. These two dimensions in the very essential way influence each other depending on the socio-demographic characteristics of the people. In the case of disabled people professional activity fulfils not only economic function but also holds essential functions of rehabilitation and integration. Making a proper use of free time has even greater influence on the progress in rehabilitation, especially in the social one. The study was aimed at examining the participation in free time of the disabled in the context of the vocational activeness.

Abstrakt	In the period 1990–2013 sugar industry in Poland faced numerous legal transformations, shifting from nearly free-market conditions into a strongly regulated sector. Changes of the sugar industry regulations had a significant impact on the structure of the sugar market, companies’ actions and, as a result, on their performance. Accession to the European Union and the reform of the sugar regime conducted from 2006 to 2010 on the initiative of the European Commission involved deep restructuring and modernization of the factories, which caused growth of their productivity. However, prices of sugar in the EU and in Poland are much higher than prices on the world market.

Abstrakt	In the article the opinions of managers of agribusiness joint-stock companies on the possibilities of working capital management policy improvement were presented. With the help of questionnaire the opinions on current working capital policy, its goals and barriers in its forming were defined. According to the managers the main barriers in working capital management included higher priority for other goals of financial management, lack of acceptance from the clients and members of the organization. The highest level of satisfaction among managers had the buying policy and the process of invoicing, that was the result of high efficiency of this area of activity. The majority of the managers considered that the existent policies of liquidity led to the optimal level of liquidity in the enterprises.

Abstrakt	Production of fruits and vegetables in Poland is characterized by a high degree of fragmentation. Manufacturers have poor technical background and little use of modern technologies. In conjunction with the lack of use of marketing opportunities, Polish fruit and vegetable producers cannot compete on the global market. Taking joint cooperation through producer groups and organizations can be the solution to the problem. EU accession in 2004 was a accelerator for development of producer groups and organizations in Poland. Financial support from the Community, national funds and the evolution of EU and national legislation had a positive impact on cooperating manufacturers on Polish market during the analysed period. Data show the development of fruit and vegetable producer groups and organizations in Poland in the years 2004–2010, focusing on their legal form, size, cultivation area, volume and value of production.

Abstrakt	A delayed succession is a relatively new phenomenon involving formal (usually, in the form of a notarial deed) transfer of a farm to a successor who, upon the transfer, does not want or is unable to take over all functions of the existing owner. The disturbance of the generational life cycle of farms leads to the disclosure of their declining stage which very often results in losing a major portion of the farm’s production potential. The research conducted confirmed that the processes of destruction on the surveyed farms were significantly advanced. The signs of the deterioration of farms were particularly visible on the farms used by persons of advanced age and on the farms owned by farmers engaged in outside-farm gainful activities.

Abstrakt	Observed in recent years increased volatility of agricultural commodity prices caused greater exposure of market participants on the price risk. The rapeseed price volatility in Poland, measured by coefficient of variation increased significantly in the years 2008–2010. In the article, We presented the possibilities of using price stabilizing market tools, including commodity derivatives in price risk management on farms in Poland. By means of simulation method presented the potential economic effects obtained in hedging transactions of rapeseed selling prices at the Matif Euronext and ICE Futures Canada markets. The conclusion is that the hedging of rapeseed prices in the futures contracts on foreign futures markets is little effective and difficult.

Abstrakt	In the paper the authors proposed a definition of food supply chains. The structure of the food chain and approaches of its assessment were also discussed. The authors indicated that it is necessary to conduct a research concerning the functioning of the food supply chains. Due to the nature of the food supply chains, especially to a temporal imbalance of supply and demand, quality requirements and exchange of quality information an important issue in the context of increasing the efficiency of agri-food companies may be raising the level of cooperation within in the chains.
