Budowa mierników agregatowych do oceny poziomu rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego

Abstract

European Union consists of 27 countries that have different cultural, political and economic background. Therefore it seems to be necessary to monitor the socio-economic development level of the member states. The aim of the paper is to construct the synthetic measure to evaluate the socio-economic development level of the European Union members, and to classify the EU countries into groups of the similar countries, in terms of the aggregated measures. The research concerns 23 states being members of the European Union in 2004 (Malta and Cyprus were excluded from the analysis). Investigation cover the period from1990 to 2006. The synthetic taxonomic measure is constructed employing 21 economic and social indicators. The broad discussion about the diagnostic variables is presented. The EU countries are classified according to the value of the taxonomic measures and Human Development Index. The results of classification obtained by applying two different aggregated measures are compared.
