Abstract	The paper presents an analysis of the process of shaping European Union legislation on GMO’s. Describes impact on the legislative process by the most important of the EU institutions: the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament as well as by various lobbing groups. The complexity and partial openness of the Union’s legislative process introduced in Lisbon Treaty was seen as an opportunity for consulting various Union’s social groups. As demonstrated in the work, existing system allows organized groups to delay substantially or even reject proposed changes in the EU legislation, important from the point of maintaining the global competitiveness of the European Union.

Title	Structural Transformation in Polish Agriculture and in EU Countries

Abstract	Structural changes in agriculture concern both production sphere as well as economic and social ones. Transformation in Polish agriculture has been performing for many years, first under influence of system transformation, next as the result of integration and globalization processes. These changes are similar to the changes in “old 15” countries of EU. Above mentioned changes regard employment reduction in agriculture, increase of production factors productivity, as well as improvement of rural farms area structure. The dynamics of transformation is greater than in “old EU – 15” countries. But productivity of production factors, especially labor productivity is far more lower than in high developed countries. The instruments of Common Agriculture Policy as well as coherence policy and structural policy are the chance for accelerating of transformation in agriculture.

Abstract	The aim of the paper is to present food situation and assess the range of food security in the European Union countries. The analysis was conducted both at national and at the household level. It was proved that nationally, in all EU countries minimum daily energy requirement was met with a surplus, but at the microeconomic level, difficulties in ensuring food security appeared in almost 9% of households in the EU-27 and even 20% of households in the EU-12. The prevalence of food insecurity varied depending on the size of the household.

Abstract	The economic crisis resulted in attempts to speed up the process of consolidation of public finances in the European Union. The purpose of this article is to determine the scale and nature of changes in the level of national state aid allocated to agriculture in recent years by the EU member states. The main source of data used on the types and scale of domestic agriculture aid granted by Member States of the EU in the period 2005–2010 was the European Commission. In the first part of the article the principles of aid for agriculture in the EU are discussed. Then the scale of support for this sector is presented. In the last part of the paper changes in the amount of support recorded in recent year are described.

Abstract	As countries develop, agriculture becomes less important part of their economies. Low food demand is one of important barriers to the development of the agriculture. However, this barrier can be overcome by food processing, resulting in more diversified food offer on the market. Analyses presented in this paper reveal, that in the countries that accessed EU in 2004 one can observe decline of the importance of agriculture. However, hypothesis concerning rise of the importance of food processing cannot be confirmed.

Abstract	The study provides an assessment of profitability of strawberries, grown for direct consumption in the traditional time of harvest. The aim was to determine the economic impact of strawberries in Poland and in the world, determine the direction of the use of strawberries in Poland and to determine the profitability of production and the factors shaping it. Our study was carried out for the period 2006–2011 in deliberately chosen farm, where for more than 10 years are produced strawberries. It was found that the fundamental determinants of profitability was the level of yields, the price obtained and the level of direct costs incurred in the production process.

Abstract	An analysis of price changes at particular levels of main agri-food markets, namely cereal market, dairy market and meat market, implies that price shifts that occurred over the period of 2004–2011 were favourable for agriculture. Polish accession to the EU triggered increase in retail food prices. Despite considerable short-term fluctuation there were no substantial changes in the share of producers, processors and traders in retail prices of food. Price mechanism assured efficient price transmission between particular stages of food markets which after price shocks recovered to previous proportions of particular margins resulting from long-term equilibrium.

Abstract	The paper includes an attempt to present the most important competences of managers. It provides an answer for a question: who is an efficient manager? It has been more and more difficult to cope with speed of life and face increasing requirements of changing environment. It concerns especially expectations towards managers. This situation raises a question, which competences of a manager will get particular importance in the nearest future. The main aim is to present intellectual entrepreneurship as a competence of an essential role in manager’s work in the market economy. There were used sources from the literature as well as own reflections. Analyzed competences do not exhaust a topic although according to the author – they are the most important ones in manager’s work. Of course, they can be not whole necessary in different workplaces, however they can be considered as a starting point for evaluation of a potential and state of art within manager’s knowledge, skills and attitude. There were presented the most important competences of managers, which prove that managerial work is responsible and has many aspects. It was noticed that intellectual entrepreneurship is a competence of a significant role in the market economy. It was stressed that manager’s knowledge and skills are a part of important, strategic resources of particular company, which gives an advantage over other entities. The paper ends with conclusions.

Abstract	The aim of the article is an attempt to look at the cultivation contract as an instrument of organisation of the agricultural market in the limited production system. The contract is considered with the example of one of the most ‘regulated’ agricultural markets, i.e. the sugar market. It is especially important to answer the question how much the current regulation of cultivation contracts enables the market to function effectively, in accordance with the assumptions of the Common Agricultural Policy. The article comprises both the issues concerning the changes taking place in the signing of cultivation contracts in different conditions of political systems and the role of the contract designated by the Community legislature after Poland’s accession to the European Union. The considerations end with an attempt to answer the question which direction the regulation of law concerning cultivation contracts should go from the point of view of a sugar beet grower and sugar manufacturer.

Abstract	A discussion was made with regard to issues related to the visualization of data concerning agricultural producer groups and their concentration in Poland. Analysis was carried out with regard to differentiation of agricultural producer groups across provinces, and with regard to their profiles, which shows that the largest number of agricultural producer groups have been established in the provinces of Wielkopolska, Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Silesia. Most agricultural producer groups focus on the production of cereals, pigs and poultry, and the most common legal form for the groups is limited liability company.

Abstract	The article is aimed at giving the assessment of marketing actions carried out in the marketing environment on the market of foodstuff. The comparative and descriptive methods, as well as the method of descriptive statistics have been used in the paper. The research period covers the years 2004–2010. In the article the essence of the product in e-marketing has been presented, paying particular attention to the needs which are being met by consumers in digital economy – the necessity to study megaproducts covering the whole range of consumers’ needs. Further various strategies pursued by business in the Internet relating to a product, including the influence of different products on human senses have been presented. The article describes the development of services provided by the Internet in the countries of the European Union and the percentage of online buyers by gender groups. It has been noted that foodstuff sold as food products is only 1.3% share of sales and paid attention to the survey comparing the time spent by consumers to buy food through the Internet.

Abstract	The work presents an analysis of blackcurrant harvest time, profitability and cultivation profitability threshold when harvest was performed manually or mechanically by means of a tractor-mounted or self-propelled harvester. It has been demonstrated that mechanical harvest reduces both the harvest time and production costs as a result of which the cultivation becomes profitable. The minimum area under blackcurrant, which generates profit, is 0.39 ha for a tractor-mounted harvester and 0.35 ha for a self-propelled harvester.

The second part of the paper concentrates on problematic of domestic sightseer’s expenses in Wolf’s Lair and shows their dimension, as well as the eternal structure, with focus on buyers of gastronomic services and role of the income in deciding about this kind of outgoings. This way, the activities of companies are even more effective and the risks associated with their operation are reduced. Presentation of “Best Practices” used by some companies in the index WIG – Food in the article was meant to demonstrate attitude of the boards of those companies having their application in economic practice, which became a requirement of our times.

Abstract	Sectoral Operational Programme Restructuring and Modernization of the Food Sector and Rural Development (SOP AGRICULTURAL) in 66% co-financed by EU funds and in 34% from the national budget, was one of the tools of agricultural policy in Poland in the first period after accession. As a part of this program 15 measures were implemented. One of these measure was called: “Improving in processing and marketing of agricultural products”, with a budget of 0.5 billion EUR, which made a quarter the entire programme budget. The support for processing under the SOP AGRICULTURAL consisted in the capital expenditures reimbursement to companies for construction or modernization of production facilities and infrastructure for wholesale trade in agricultural products. One of the conditions indispensable to receive support was the economic viability – i.e. the ability of companies to implement the project and to the further continuation of profitable business in the sector. The aim of the article is to present the results of “Improving in processing and marketing of agricultural products” under the SOP of Agriculture in the meat industry sector, by analyzing the financial performance of companies that have benefited from support. The study complies 20 companies from the area of five provinces from Central Poland and North-East of Poland: warmińsko - mazurskie, podlaskie, lubelskie, mazowieckie and łódzkie. Companies were divided into three groups, taking as a criterion for division the value of their assets in the base year of 2004. The study results show that some enterprises, improved financial results in line with the program. These are companies with value of assets ranging from 30 to 90 million zł. The smaller companies (asset value to 30 million zł) observed decline in financial performance. Financial situation of the largest companies (assets in excess of 90 million zł) did not change.
