Title | The rise in the demand for Fair Trade products as the sign of the social responsibility of consumers in Poland |
Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | |
Abstract | The growth of an interest in FairTrade products worldwide is a consequence of the change of the value and consumers’ attitudes which start treating the consumption as moral choice. Being concerned about natural environment and the living conditions of producers from Third World countries they are ready to pay more than market prices what confirms their social and ecological conscience. Fair Trade is a social movement in which actively not only consumers, but also producers and distributors are becoming involved, as well as a number of non-governmental organizations. In spite of the intense development of this movement in the global scale, popularity of this idea and particularly its implementation, does not seem to proceed identically in all developed countries. The purpose of the paper is to describe the development of Fair Trade - social movement in the world, including its connections with the concept of corporate social responsibility, along with paying special attention to the popularity of this idea in conditions of the Polish economy. |

Abstract | Globalization is one of factors shaping cotemporary consumer behaviour. It results in, among other things, growing similarities between particular economies (particularly of developed countries). These similarities lead to the unification of consumer tastes and popularization of certain consumption models in Western Europe and the USA. The article is aimed at identifying aspects of consumer market behaviour that may be affected by globalization, and particularly the globalization of consumption. The article makes use of information published by GUS (Central Statistical Office), Eurostat, such research institutions as CBOS (Public Opinion Research Centre) or Pentor, as well as the results of questionnaire survey conducted by the author. The role of the Internet has become increasingly profound. Growing number of Polish people travel abroad, also officially, and have good command of English. Furthermore, the structure of Polish consumption has been evolving into the structure of household consumption observed in the EU-15 and the USA. The Poles have become conscious buyers. To be more specific the following two segments of consumers can be distinguished on the market: open consumers and traditionalists. Needless to say, the former represent greater part of society under the impact of consumption globalization. |

Key words | public banks, financial stability, inefficiency of public entities |
Abstract | Public banks are important components of financial markets in many countries. Their goal is to implement social and economic policies of governments. Their activity should have positive impact on economy and stability of financial sector. After the first phase of the crisis their main stabilization function includes provision of long-term financing and countercyclical policies supporting investment demand in domestic economy. However, like all public institutions these banks are prone to microeconomic and macroeconomic mechanisms, which distort their actions and may lead to decrease of social welfare. This paper outlines potential inefficiencies, which may arise as an effect of public bank activities, as well as a short description of banks which experienced such events on a large scale. There are also presented recommendations how to prevent materialization of such scenarios in a future. |

Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | In this paper the basic concepts of modern economics concerned with the market, market structures and the effectiveness of market functioning are presented. Definitions of the market were characterized on the basis of theoretical concepts. Classification of the types of market structures was proposed and the preconditions for the improvement of effectiveness of particular brand markets were stated. The market constitutes basic institution of market economy and so the rules of its functioning should be perfected. Historically, economic thought presented the market of agrifood products as an ideal of perfect competition. Currently, due to the processes of concentration on the demand side, agricultural markets function within the structure of imperfect competition (oligopsonistic). |

Title | Agriculture in developing countries |
Słowa kluczowe | |
Key words | |
Abstrakt | Difficult economic situation in developing countries is a result of a number of factors. Among others, low level of technique and technology, lack of skilled labor force or poor infrastructure. It should be noted, that many of these countries are based on natural economy, with dominating employment in agriculture; consequently, there is very shallow market for industrial goods. Taking into account the role of agriculture in these countries, it is not only industrial development, but mainly agricultural development and modernization that are crucial for making their situation better. Processes of globalization and regional integration, currently observed in the world economy, are favorable conditions for this purpose. The intensification of international trade accompanying these trends strongly influences the level of benefits achieved and the position of each country in the international division of labor. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the developed countries preach the ideas of liberalization of world agricultural trade, in fact they protect the market. |

Abstract | The aim of the article is the presentation of changes conditioning the economics of agriculture in Poland and Russia, using examples of different models of structural development which have conditioned globalization. Attention was paid to the dissimilarities which conditioned macroeconomics and differentiated paths of obtaining macroeconomic equilibrium which were violated as a result of constitutional transformation. One characterized change concerning agriculture was observed on the basis of the following indicators: prices of foodstuffs, price shears and the parity of earnings of farms. One discussed streams of re-transfers to agriculture based on the methodology of the measurement applied as a result of the World Bank’s appraisal of the economic surplus. Attention was paid to the imbalances among re-transfers to agriculture and the flow of the economic surplus to non-agricultural segments of the economy. Evidence shows imbalances in the considered countries resulting from different models of conversions in agriculture. |

Abstract | The aim of the article was a comparative analysis of labour productivity in the agri-food economy in Poland and Germany in 2010. Labour productivity was calculated by referring to the value of output and gross value added per one employee. The comparison shows that productivity in Poland is much lower than in the agri-food industry in Germany. The reason for this is primarily a structural defect associated with very large reserves of labour in Polish agriculture. |

Zjawisko to występuje w sektorze mięsnym – w segmencie mięsa czerwonego i drobiowego. |
Abstract | The article discusses the strategy of vertical integration in production and poultry processing in Poland. The Capital Group Indykpol was used as the example of the effectiveness of such action. The paper presents the history and evolution of the structure of the Group and its scope of activity. Hereinafter, chosen financial data of this subject between 2001 and 2011, were presented. It allowed to demonstrate, that the company strategy of vertical integration, accepted at the end of 1990s by Indykpol, turned out to be the right way for the growth and the development in the long term. |

Abstract | In our research we study the relationship and inherency of human resources and competitiveness in the regions of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. At present, „knowledge based economy”, „economy of knowledge” are more and more frequently used concepts which emphasize the importance of human capital in the process of the development of the society and the economy. The „Europe 2020” strategy, accepted in spring 2010, also focuses on „keeping economic power of the community determining 500 million people’s life in competition” [European Committee 2010]. One of the priorities in the strategy is intelligent growth, which means the establishment of a society based on knowledge and innovation. However, building up a knowledge based society is only possible with a healthy and educated population. Improvement of human resources is a definite factor of establishing regional development. The created added value can be higher, if the potential of human capital is higher as well. One of the main goals of our research is to organize indicators which define human development into principal components, to create clusters from the regions of the V4 countries according to the principal components, and to uncover the differences between the clusters. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the connection between the level of development and competitiveness – defined by the principal components - of the human resources of a region. |

Słowa kluczowe | partnerstwo publiczno-prywatne, zrównoważone rolnictwo, agrobiznes, zasoby finansowe, inwestycje, rynek hurtowy |
Key words | public-private partnership, agricultural sustainability, agribusiness, financial supply, investments, wholesale market |

On the other hand there are no incentives for private business, both domestic and foreign, to invest in Ukrainian agriculture. One of efficient ways to attract investments is introduction public-private partnership as a way of cooperation between state, represented by public sector and private companies which may benefit for both parties and for the sustainable development of respective area. The article highlights essence of PPP as a type of partnership widely implemented in other branches of economy, but rarely applied in agribusiness of Ukraine, as opposite to foreign, mainly, less developed countries. It is also focused on the operation of wholesale agricultural market as a concrete example of PPP in Ukraine and discusses legal restrictions as an important constraint of its development. |

Paper points at importance of direct selling of agricultural products based on own questionnaire research. To get as close as possible to final consumers with fresh products and selling these products directly to consumers away from a fixed retail location are the most important points. Producers are constantly looking for adequate distribution channels for their produce which would satisfied requirements of customers and obtain a reasonable effect for producers as well. Direct selling of agricultural products is a form of sales, which does not appear so frequently in the practice because of urgent need for industrial treatment of most agricultural products. Despite this fact, direct selling of agricultural products has its own unique economic, commercial and non-productive substantiation. For direct selling is the most important to use the tools of product policy . The direct selling of agricultural products is concentrated mainly on traditional agricultural products or their processed food products - dominant is quality of sold product. Quality of the product influences directly image of the product as well as the groups of customers of direct selling. Direct selling from the farms in the Slovak Republic contributes to the total revenues for the agricultural production capacity from 6% to 7%. Direct selling is more intensive in the companies selling fruit and vegetables, where the volume of direct sales reaches 10% to 15% share of sales. Although direct selling is the just additional distribution way, it is appropriate to choose a strategy that respects the manufacturing offer of the company and the economy of the sales. Within direct selling of agricultural products, there is also a need to use the tools of communication policy, such as advertising, sales promotion and public relations to get closer to the target customer. |

Abstract | New Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2014-2020 introduces the changes in direct payments. Progressive reduction and capping of the payment will have impact mainly on big enterprises managing large land area. This is a reality in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The paper is devoted to quantify and model the impact of forthcoming changes on the management of farms in Slovakia. As the results in chosen enterprises in Slovakia proved, these changes have a negative effect on the enterprises which are mainly the large ones with the low sales as well as the small salaries paid per hectare in comparison with the rest of the companies in Slovakia. In sense of effectiveness and rural development we do consider planned changes in direct payments as rational. |
