Abstract	In the world about 100 countries produce tobacco. The major producers are China, India, Brazil, the United States, Turkey, Malawi and Zimbabwe. They together produce over 80% of the worlds’ tobacco. In the fact, only China accounts for over 35% of world production. FAO projected that world tobacco production is over 7,1 mln tones in 2010. The number of smokers will increase mainly due to expansion of the world’s population. By 2030 there will be at least another 2 billion people in the world. Cigarettes account for the largest share of manufactured tobacco products, 96% of total value sales. Asia, Australia and the Far East are by far the largest consumers (2715 billion cigarettes), next the Americas (745 billion), Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Economies (631 billion) and Western Europe (606 billion). In Poland one of the most important branches is the tobacco industry. The cigarettes are the main part of polish production and consumption. Analysis of changes in production and consumption of tobacco products, especially cigarettes shows in the whole period 1990–2006 changing trends. In the last years it shows the distinctly growing trend of production of cigarettes and small stabilization of consumption

Abstract	In the paper the changes of the structure of an economic activity in Poland in the span of 1993–2008 was presented. The main aim of the article is an attempt of segmentation of analysed time period on periods characterised by similarity of the labour market structure within period. As the elements of analyzed structure authors selected four categories: employed persons on a full-time basis, employed persons on the part-time basis, unemployed persons and professionally passive persons. The segmentation of analysed time period was conducted with the use of vectors elimination method, assuming arithmetical average of non-diagonal elements of the lack of structures similarity measurements matrix as threshold value. As the result of the procedure three time periods were distinguished, characterized by the similarity within period, i.e. 1993–1999, 2000–2006 and 2007–2008.

The most important are: economic growth, demographic and cultural trends, structure of households and their incomes, changes of eating habits, and finally development of foodservice market. The appearance of different new trends and functions in foodservice sector is observed. It is hypothesized further development of foodservice market in Poland as an important segment of Polish economy.

Abstract	The paper addresses dilemmas pertaining to managing a family business. A family company cannot be defined by one general definition so three groups of definitions are presented. The work outlines specificity of family business functioning. Family companies are less formalized and, as a result, more flexible, can more easily adjust to changes, are not that bureaucratized, which makes it easier for their leaders to take decisions, establish objectives or adjust them if necessary. Family businesses are subject to all the problems that beset small companies. In addition to typical predictable difficulties of such companies, there occur problems associated with the necessity of combining the priorities of the family and the fi rm. Weaknesses and potential risks of running a family business include: domestic discords transferred into the fi rm, generation gap in the company or turbulent moments associated with business succession. The issue of succession among family business owners is often passed over due to a number of reasons, for example lack of knowledge about or how to deal with the process of succession

Title	Product innovativeness of industrial enterprises on the food market

Abstract	In the article the problem of product innovations in the food sector was described. In the first part, based on the literature data, chosen definitions and classifications of new products were presented, particularly taken into consideration food products. In the second part, the results of the Central Statistical Offi ce (GUS) researches about product innovativeness in industrial enterprises manufacturing food products and beverages were presented. In the third chapter of the article, based on the results of the questionnaire research carried out on the sample of 149 enterprises, the main directions of product innovations on the food marked were presented. The results of both the desk and the field researches indicate that the low level of innovativeness is characteristic for food sector in Poland and that the main trends of food product changes are: changes in appearance of products and packages, improvement of health proprieties of food, changes of taste, and improvement of the comfort of products use.

Abstract	The project aimed at studying basic functional conditions for farms managed by young farmers. It showed that young farmers have been active and susceptible to changes, with consequential farm modernization. In their own opinions, the most important internal barriers in farm development are the shortage of own financial means, too small farm area and poor farm outfit with fixed assets. The most often indicated major factors dominating among external, farm-independent barriers were: too high prices of essential farm-production necessities, inflow of food products from abroad and problems experienced in sales of farm products and services. For an effective farm modernization process, young farmers need support from the institutional environment, including that by advisory and financial institutions, payment agencies, non-governmental organizations and local self-governments

Abstract	The paper aims to present the theoretical background as well as directions of changes in economics and organization of agricultural enterprises that take place which are under the influence of environment. It analyzes the changes that take place in costs of main production inputs and the consequences of such changes for companies. There are also shown directions of adjusting activities in case of selection of techniques and technologies of production and organization of the company with emphasis of application of technical progress, and within it especially biological progress. The paper argues also about the costs-driving aspects of human capital and resulting from that need to systematically change employment level.

Abstract	In Poland, in the sequence of recent years, changes in financing SME activity took place. Entrepreneurs are diverging from internal source of finances more and more by devoting to others forms of raising possessed capital. It is caused by increasing competition which is forcing companies to taking higher risk. A competent choice of the financing source is a substantial problem. It should have a beneficial influence on the profitability in the enterprise, as well as keeping the financial risk at reasonable level. The main direct benefit was a possibility of using structural funds after the accession of Poland into the EU, especially for the SME business sector. The implementation of programs which are co-financed by the EU funds is bringing visible effects more and more.

Abstract	A level of innovations in economy has determined a growth of venture capital market. In well developed countries venture capital market plays a significant role in funding innovative projects, but in Poland, so far, a share of venture capital investors is still rather slight. After access of Poland to European Union, directed into increase of innovations in economy of member states, venture capital market has been accelerated, both in informal (business angels) and formal (venture capital funds) markets. There are some interactions between these groups of venture capital investors, like as cooperation, co-financing, and mainly keeping certain turn of funding – in early stages of project development– business angels, and further – venture capital funds. It should be underlined, that in Poland venture capital market has been developing in quite different way, not very similar to scheme worked out in other countries. It can be a result of relatively low level of venture capital market development and structural changes of overall environment

Abstract	The article analyses Japanese economic conditions and their consequences for financing real investment in the sector of non-financial corporations in the nineties of the 20th century. In order to identify sources of financing real investment, national accounts was used. Data to be taken into consideration while assessing real investment made by Japanese companies was obtained from two accounts: a capital and financial accounts. It is found out that the nineties witnessed considerable changes in financing real investment in the sector of Japanese nonfinancial corporations, which stems from two overlapping mechanisms: companies’ preference to finance real investment by means of internal funds and lower willingness of financial institutions to lend money.
